Chapter Nine

Looking at the group in front of her, she didn't let her eyes wander too far from those directly in front of her, myself, or Terry. She took a breath as if to mentally prepare herself and started telling us her story. “The pack that I was born into is The Southern Star Pack, in South America. The alpha was very mean and domineering. He didn’t believe that a female should have and say in any matter, regardless of what the topic was. This included her own life and household. If a female, young or old, were to voice her opinion on anything, she would be severely punished first by all the males in her immediate family, then by him in front of the whole pack. If the charges were severe enough, she would also be punished by the other males in the pack for all to watch. The type of punishment was determined by the ‘crime’ that the female committed. None of them were ever nice, and some were just down right degrading.” Jenny looked around at everyone, stopping at me and Terry. Taking another deep breath, she continued.  “My family ran from the Southern Star Pack because of a punishment that was handed down to my sister Samantha. She was only three years older than me and had just turned 18. One man in our pack Gabriel had always asked my father for the honor of mating with my sister, but our father always told him that his girls would be mated with the wolf that the Moon Goddess handpicked for their perfect match. He tried many times to convince dad to let him mate with my sister and dad would always tell him no. about six months after her birthday, Alpha Devon came to our house. He said that some claims had been made that my sister was socializing with both mated and unmated males. That he needed to take her into custody until the time came that she was proven innocent of her charges. Without another word, he had his men search our house looking for her. We were advised to find and bring forth anyone who would be willing to testify on my sister’s behalf. That the trial would start the next day.” “My parents didn’t think finding anyone to testify for my sister would be an issue. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. Nobody was willing to come forth and speak on my sister’s behalf. The next day, at my sister’s trial, she was found guilty of socializing with males without a chaperone present as our customs dictated.” By this time, Jenny was looking down at the floor, and refused to lift her head and look at anyone.  “Our Alpha asked any male who fraternized with my sister to come forward and speak. There were many males, most of them were young and unmated, but a few were already mated and had children of their own. While each one of her accusers laid out intimate details of their ‘secret meetings' with my sister, she was unable to speak on her own behalf. Nor was she allowed the chance to dispute what any of them said about her.” “Alpha, please don’t make me finish telling the story.” Jenny said, as she clutched my hand. By now, I could feel the bones rubbing together as well as a few that had been broken. “I know this is hard,” Terry said, reaching for her hand. “But this is something that only you can speak on, and it’s time that the story, your story is told.” He said, with a very sad look dominating his face. I wrapped my arm around her, while trying to discreetly extract my hand from her grasp. But it was almost like she had a death grip on my hand.  Looking back down at the floor, she started talking once again. “My sister's trial was held in front of the entire pack. The pack surrounded her on all sides, with us, her family, sitting right in front of her. She couldn’t go anywhere if she wanted to, Alpha made sure of that. My sister was tied down with ropes that had been dipped in silver. Any move that she made would have been very painful for her. After all the ‘witnesses’ were called forth and made their statements, Alpha said that a few minutes would be needed to determine my sister's fate. My sister looked at our father shaking her head while the tears continued to roll down her face. We had known these people all our lives, they were our family and friends, people that we thought we could trust with our lives and yet, they chose to testify and speak lies against my sister. For what reason, it was unknown. Although the reasoning would soon be revealed. After only 10 minutes, Alpha and the 20 people that formed the jury returned. ‘Samantha has been found guilty of her charges. Her crime, fraternizing with males without the proper chaperone that an unmated female should have at all times when she is unmated.’ My father tried to console my sister but was pulled back to his seat with men standing on either side of him.  “with men surrounding us and holding us down, Alpha began to speak to everyone. ‘Samantha has defiled herself and is no longer pure and allowed herself to become unfit for mating. Is there anyone who is willing to allow this woman into their home as a concubine? She can no longer live with her parents, least she encourages her younger sister down the same road of shame that she has traveled. We can’t allow that to happen.’ Not understanding or believing what he was saying, I tried my hardest to break free from his men. But, they were too strong.” “The things they said about my sister, the way they talked about her. I couldn’t understand it, I couldn’t figure out why they would degrade my sister in such a way. These were people that we lived with, grew up with, shared meals with and cried with. But for some unknown reason they have all turned on us and were telling lies about her. “I’ll accept her into my house” of course, why couldn’t I see the connection before? Gabriel decided to speak for my sister’s hand. At that point I stopped trying to fight against the men that were holding me. I looked at my father who was looking at my mother. Who was looking at my sister. Turning to my sister, I see that she has become hysterical and is shaking uncontrollably.  “‘The full moon is 4 days away, at that time, we will have the union party for Gabriel and Samantha. Until then, Samantha, you are to stay inside your rooms and away from your sister. We don’t want you corrupting your younger sisters.” with that everyone started leaving the gathering place. With our alpha standing next to my sister, watching as everyone left. “That night, we all held each other and cried. Our rooms were guarded by men who had been instructed not to allow me into my sister’s room. The second day, they started getting a little relaxed with their watch. We were able to slip away during the early morning hours. We traveled by water most of the time, we made it to the United States finally after running for almost 2 months. Most of that time, we had to backtrack and cris cross our course because Alpha Devon’s men were chasing us. They almost caught us at one point. But dad sent us ahead of him. I don’t know what happened, I haven’t seen him since. Once my mother, sister and I reached North America, we had to continue running.” “Alpha’s men caught up with us again one night as we were sleeping. I was supposed to be on watch, but I fell asleep due to exhaustion. They came from all directions, mom started screaming for my sisters and I to run. I don’t know which direction my sisters ran since we were on opposite sides of our camp. I ran as fast and for as long as I could, trying to stay as close to the water as possible. Once I couldn’t lift my leg to take another step, I passed out. When I came to, Alpha Terry was sitting close to me. Not close enough for me to think he was a threat. But as you can imagine, I was still scared that he was near me.” “At that point, I didn’t ask her any questions,” said Terry. “I told her that she looked like she needed help and offered the safety and comfort of my pack.”
