"I’m coming for you, princess... No power on earth, and no bloodline in hell, is ever going tokeep me away from you." — Dante
Chapter 13: Echoes in the Dark
The cold, damp air of the emergency service tunnel clung to Elena’s skin like a second layer ofice. Every breath she exhaled plumed into a faint, wispy cloud under the stuttering crimson glowof the backup exit lights. Beside her, Marcus moved with the swift, silent efficiency of a seasonedshadow, his injured shoulder rigidly held as his eyes scanned every intersecting corridor forVanguard patrols.
They had put three subterranean blocks between themselves and the collapsed primary sector, but the muffled, ground-shaking thuds of continuing explosions still vibrated through thereinforced concrete beneath their boots.
Elena stopped abruptly, her hand gripping the rough, rusted metal railing along the tunnel wall. Her chest heaved, not just from the exertion of the run, but from the suffocating weight of sheerterror clawing at her throat. Dante was back there. In the smoke, in the fire, locked in a brutal, bloody war to the death against his own blood—against Julian.
"Marcus," Elena called out, her voice cracking slightly before she forced every ounce of courageinto a steady register. "We can't just keep running. We have to go back."
Marcus halted, pivoting on his heel to face her. His expression was grim, hardened by years ofsurviving the brutal underworld beneath the city's glittering facade. "If I go back withoutsecuring you, Boss will put a bullet through my skull himself, princess. His direct order was to getyou to the secondary transport."
"He's fighting his brother alone!" Elena stepped forward, her hazel eyes blazing with fierce, uncompromising intensity. The innocent, sheltered researcher she had been just twenty-fourhours ago was entirely gone, replaced by a woman forged in the fire of survival and deep, consuming devotion. "Dante gave everything to protect me. I am not turning into a coward andleaving him in that slaughterhouse."
Before Marcus could argue further, a sharp, static-laced burst erupted from the encrypted comm-link clipped to his tactical vest.
*“Marcus... report status,”* a deep, gravelly voice rasped through the comms. It was strained, breathless, and edged with unmistakable pain, but it was undeniably Dante.
Marcus lunged forward, snatching the comm-unit to his mouth with a gasp of pure relief. "Boss! We’re at Sector 11 junction, moving toward the extraction point. Are you—"
*“Save the chatter,”* Dante interrupted, his voice cutting through the static with razor-sharpauthority. *“Julian’s main strike force is regrouping to sweep the secondary tunnels. Get her outof the perimeter now.”*
"And you?" Elena cried out, snatching the comm-device directly from Marcus’s hand, her voicetrembling with raw, desperate emotion. "Dante, where are you?"
A heavy, agonizing pause stretched across the frequency, broken only by the distant, eerie echoof dripping water and the hum of dying generators. When Dante spoke again, his tone hadsoftened, dropping into that deep, husky cadence that belonged only to her.
*“I’m coming for you, princess,”* Dante murmured softly through the static, a fierce, unbreakable promise echoing in every syllable. *“No power on earth, and no bloodline in hell, isever going to keep me away from you. Wait for me.”*
Before she could reply, the connection abruptly terminated with a sharp hiss.
Marcus grabbed her arm gently, pulling her toward a heavy iron ladder leading upward into theshadows. "You heard him. Dante’s finishing it. We need to reach the surface vehicle beforeJulian’s sweep team cuts off this exit."
They climbed the vertical ladder in agonizing silence, emerging through a spring-loaded floorhatch into an abandoned shipping warehouse on the city's industrial docks. The cold rain pouredheavily outside, hammering against the corrugated iron roof, washing away the smell of smokeand cordite with the clean scent of an midnight storm.
Marcus rushed toward a black armored SUV parked deep in the shadows of the warehouse, unlocking the doors with a swift beep. He pushed the passenger door open for Elena, but beforeshe could slide inside, the heavy steel warehouse rollup doors at the far end screeched violentlyupward.
Headlights cut through the darkness, blinding them in a harsh white glare.
Three Vanguard tactical vehicles blocked the exit, their engines roaring like caged beasts. Fromthe lead vehicle stepped Julian Vance, his uniform scorched, his cheek stained with blood andsoot, but his grey eyes burning with psychotic triumph. He raised an assault rifle, leveling itstraight at Marcus’s chest.
"Family reunions," Julian sneered, his voice cutting through the roar of the rain, "always end intragedy."
Elena froze, her heart stopping dead in her chest. They were trapped.
Suddenly, a deafening roar shook the dockyards from above. A massive black helicopter droppedout of the storm clouds overhead, its spotlight blinding Julian and his men. The side door slidopen with a violent slam, and a silhouette dropped from the rope ladder into the rain, landingwith terrifying, predatory grace right between Julian and Elena.
Dante.
His tactical vest was shredded, dark blood staining the shoulder of his black shirt, but his blueeyes blazed with pure, unadulterated hellfire. He didn't even look back at Elena. He raised hisweapon, his voice e choing across the warehouse like the final judgment of a king.
"Drop your weapons, Julian," Dante growled, the rain hissing against his skin. "Your war endstonight."
