Chapter 1 A heavy weight sat on my chest, pinning me down. I struggled to draw in air, dust coating my mouth and nose. ‘Rose.’ The voice sounded distant, muffled, making it impossible for me to make out who was calling my name. I tried to turn my head, to see if I could spot anyone, but couldn’t move. Something was wedged on either side of me, as well as on top of me, keeping me immobile. A low groan came from nearby, and I shivered at the agony encased in the sound. The groan came again, followed by dull thuds and the sound of more muffled voices. I felt something shift on my right, loosening the pressure on the side of my head, and I was now able to turn that way, searching for whoever was groaning. At first I couldn’t make sense of what I saw. It was a dusty maze of broken timber
