I lit a cigarette, watching the flame catch before bringing it to my lips.
Lately there have been too many problems but none that couldn’t be handled.
I had men moving shipments, collecting debts, cleaning messes I shouldn’t have to think about. Everything ran on time and right.
Because I made sure of it. But when I got word that Serenity was in my den, something sharp twisted inside me.
Not surprising. I’d been expecting her. Men like her father always ended up here eventually.
I exhaled slowly, watching the smoke curl into the air.
She wasn’t supposed to matter.
Just another careless girl who didn’t know where she was stepping into.
But she did something stupid, something bold. She put money on me like I was some cheap distraction she could buy.
