Nightmares Before Dawn
"Hate breeds more hate. Someone has to be the fool who chooses differently. If that fool will be me, so be it." I say it firmly with pure confidence, even though I am scared. Scared of death. My knees tremble, fists clench and jaw tightens.
Blood trickles down my chin, warm like honey and red like cherry. I stumble on my feet. My eyelids grow heavy, like I haven't slept for nights. The world feels like a mirage.
The demon king smirks at my decision and says, "You think those pesty insects are worth saving? Do you owe them or something? What did they do to deserve the right to live?"
"They believed in me. And I want to be a hero to them till the end.",
The demon king's smirk falters. Something stirs inside him. Maybe thoughtfulness or self-doubt?
He speaks, "Humans are such idiotic creatures. A hero...huh? Right...if you become a hero, can you ensure the safety of the demons?"
I let out a sigh and say, "I'll put a barrier between the Assiah, the world of humans and Gehenna, the world of demons. That should suffice...don't you think?"
The demon king's prideful smirk turned into surprise..then hesitation and shame real quick.
He says, "Raymond...I'll be sure to remember that name. I can't win even if I fight against you. But before dying, I want to fulfil my duties of a king. In my next life, I don't wanna your enemy. But your friend who can fight alongside you."
With that, the demon king inserted the sword in his chest and let out a death scream.
The warmth of the blood cooled down into sweat and the demon king's scream dissolved into my pounding chest.
I fumble upright on my bed, breathing heavily and sweating.
What was that? Was it a nightmare? Why can't I remember what I saw. Was it Astral travel? What was the meaning of that? Why can't I remember it?? Not this before the day of the entrance exam! Ugh!!!
I get up from the bed and pace around the room.
Not again. These weird dreams...why do they keep coming?
