CHAPTER ONE:The Promise We Made
The first time Isabella Hayes met Alexander Sterling, she was eight years old, wearing a pink dress, two untidy ponytails and a pair of shoes she absolutely hated.
She had been forced to attend her father's business gathering, and she had spent the first twenty minutes complaining about how boring everything was.
Her father, Richard Hayes, had laughed when she threatened to hide beneath the dining table until it was time to go home.
"Isabella, sweetheart, please behave. Mr Sterling has brought his son. Why don't you go and introduce yourself?"
Isabella folded her arms.
"I don't want to."
Richard chuckled. "Then I suppose you'll have to entertain yourself."
That was when a boy appeared beside her.
He was slightly taller, dressed in a perfectly fitted navy-blue suit, with dark brown hair and striking blue eyes.
"Are you always this grumpy?" he asked.
Isabella turned towards him.
"Are you always this annoying?"
The boy smiled.
I'm Alexander."
"I didn't ask."
He laughed.
For some reason, that irritated her even more.
"Fine. I'm Isabella. Now leave me alone."
Instead of leaving, Alexander sat beside her.
"What if I don't want to?"
She stared at him before finally laughing.
That evening, the two children disappeared into the garden and spent nearly two hours playing together.
By the time their parents found them, Isabella had grass stains on her dress, Alexander had lost his expensive jacket, and both children had become inseparable.
Nobody knew that the friendship formed that evening would eventually become the greatest love story and the greatest heartbreak of their lives.
Fourteen years later.
The Hayes and Sterling families had become closely connected through business and friendship.
Richard Hayes owned Hayes International, a multinational investment and technology company. His relationship with Victor Sterling, Alexander's adopted father, had been built on years of business partnerships.
Richard treated Alexander like his own son.
In fact, he trusted him more than some of his own business associates.
And Isabella?
She was hopelessly in love with him.
At twenty-two, Isabella had grown into a beautiful, confident young woman. Her chestnut hair fell in soft waves down her back, and her hazel eyes seemed to brighten whenever Alexander entered a room.
Alexander, now twenty-four, had become a promising businessman. Intelligent, charming and occasionally arrogant, he possessed the kind of confidence that made people naturally gravitate towards him.
But there was one person who could make him forget every responsibility he carried.
Isabella.
They had been dating privately for almost three years.
Although their families suspected something, the two had not officially announced their relationship.
Alexander wanted to make it special.
He wanted to propose.
And he had already started planning.
"Alexander!"
He barely had time to turn before Isabella threw her arms around his neck.
He caught her effortlessly.
"Careful, princess."
She laughed as he placed her back on her feet.
"I missed you."
"I saw you yesterday."
"And?"
"And I missed you too."
She smiled.
Alexander leaned down and kissed her forehead.
They were standing in the garden of the Hayes family mansion. The evening breeze moved gently through the flowers, and the distant sound of music floated from the ballroom.
Isabella studied his face.
You're hiding something."
Alexander raised an eyebrow.
"Am I?"
"Yes. You've been smiling at your phone all evening."
"Perhaps I'm talking to someone interesting."
Her expression immediately changed.
"Someone interesting?"
He laughed.
"You're jealous already?"
"I'm not jealous."
"Of course not."
She hit his chest playfully.
Alexander caught her hand and pulled her closer.
"There's nobody else, Isabella."
His voice had softened.
"You're the only woman I want."
She looked into his eyes.
"Promise?"
He brushed a strand of hair away from her face.
"I promise."
He kissed her gently, and for a moment, the world seemed to disappear.
"I have something planned for us," he whispered.
"What?"
"Patience."
"I hate surprises."
"No, you hate waiting."
She laughed.
He kissed her once more before taking her hand.
Neither of them noticed the man standing on the balcony above them.
Victor Sterling watched the couple with a cold expression.
He had never approved of Alexander's attachment to Isabella.
To him, love was a weakness, and the Hayes family represented an obstacle to everything he wanted.
Richard Hayes had recently refused to approve a major business merger that would have given Victor greater control over Hayes International.
Victor had smiled during their meeting.
He had shaken Richard's hand.
But privately, he had decided that the Hayes family would pay for humiliating him.
And Alexander's relationship with Isabella presented the perfect opportunity.
Later that evening, Alexander received an urgent message from his father's private assistant.
He was instructed to meet Victor in his office.
When he arrived, Victor was standing beside his desk.
"Sit down."
Alexander frowned.
"What's wrong?"
Victor slid a folder across the desk.
"I need you to review something."
Alexander opened it.
Inside were several confidential documents belonging to Hayes International.
His expression changed.
"Where did you get these?"
"That's not important."
These are restricted company documents. Why do you have them?"
Victor ignored the question.
"Your relationship with Isabella is becoming a problem."
Alexander closed the folder.
"She's not a problem."
"You're becoming emotionally involved with a family that could ruin everything we've built."
"Is this about the merger?"
Victor's expression hardened.
"Be careful, Alexander."
Alexander stood.
"I love Isabella. I'm not going to abandon her because you dislike her father."
For several seconds, neither man spoke.
Then Victor smiled.
It was not a pleasant smile.
"Love makes men foolish."
Alexander walked towards the door.
"Goodnight, Father."
Victor watched him leave.
When the door closed, he picked up his telephone.
"Is everything ready?" he asked.
A woman's voice answered.
"Yes, sir."
"Good. Make sure the file is where it needs to be."
He ended the call.
On his desk lay a photograph of Richard Hayes.
Victor picked it up and studied it.
"Your family should have accepted my offer."
He placed the photograph face down.
"Now you'll learn what happens when you stand in my way."
The following morning, Alexander arrived at Hayes International earlier than usual.
Richard had invited him to review a new business proposal.
He was looking forward to the meeting because he intended to ask Richard for Isabella's hand in marriage.
He had even purchased a ring.It was hidden inside his jacket pocket.
However, when Alexander entered the executive boardroom, he immediately noticed something was wrong.
Richard was standing beside the conference table.
Two security officers stood near the door.
Several executives were whispering among themselves.
And Isabella was nowhere to be seen.
"Good morning," Alexander greeted.
Richard did not respond.
Instead, he pushed a document towards him.
"Do you recognise this?"
Alexander glanced down.
His expression changed.
It was the same confidential file he had seen in Victor's office the previous night.
"Where did you get this?"
Richard's voice trembled with anger.
That's what I should be asking you."
Alexander looked around.
"What is happening?"
One of the executives stood.
"Mr Sterling, this confidential document was discovered in an encrypted folder linked to your company credentials. It contains information about our upcoming acquisition and private financial arrangements."
Alexander stared at him.
"That's impossible."
Richard's eyes were filled with disappointment.
"Alexander, I trusted you."
"Mr Hayes, listen to me. I didn't steal anything."
"Then explain why your credentials were used."
"I don't know."
A second executive placed another document on the table.
It contained evidence suggesting that the confidential information had been transferred to a competing company.
Alexander shook his head.
This is a setup."
Richard looked at him.
"Who would do such a thing?"
Alexander opened his mouth.
But the answer he wanted to give was impossible.
He could not accuse his own father without proof.
And that hesitation would cost him everything.
"Mr Hayes, I swear to you, I had nothing to do with this."
Richard turned away.
"Security will escort you out."
Alexander felt something inside him break.
"Please. Let me speak to Isabella."
"Not until this matter is resolved."
"Sir—"
"Get out!"
The security officers approached.
Alexander looked at Richard one last time.
"I love your daughter. I would never do anything to hurt this family."
Richard closed his eyes.
"Then you should have thought about that before betraying us."
Alexander was escorted out.
And the ring in his pocket suddenly felt heavier than ever.
Across the city, Isabella was sitting in her father's office when her best friend rushed inside.
"Isabella!"
She looked up.
"What happened?"
Her friend placed a newspaper on the desk.
The headline made her blood run cold.
HAYES INTERNATIONAL HIT BY MAJOR CORPORATE ESPIONAGE SCANDAL — ALEXANDER STERLING ACCUSED.
Isabella stared at the words.
"No."
She picked up the newspaper.
"No, this can't be right."
Her telephone began ringing.
Alexander.
She answered immediately.
"Alex?"
"Isabella, listen to me."
Her voice trembled.
"Tell me it's not true."
There was silence.
Then he spoke.
"I didn't do it."
She closed her eyes.
"Then why is everyone saying you did?"
"Because someone wants to destroy your father. I need you to trust me."
Tears gathered in her eyes.
"Alexander, my father is devastated. The entire company is collapsing. Do you understand what's happening?"
"I know. I'm trying to fix it."
"How could you let this happen?"
I didn't!"
His voice rose for the first time.
"Isabella, please. Don't turn against me."
She looked through the glass wall of her father's office.
Richard was sitting alone, his head buried in his hands.
Her heart broke.
"Give me a reason to believe you."
Alexander swallowed.
"Because I love you."
She said nothing.
"Isabella?"
But before she could answer, the telephone in her other hand began ringing.
It was the family doctor.
She answered.
"Hello?"
"Miss Hayes, you need to come to the hospital immediately."
Her heart stopped.
"Why? What's wrong?"
There was a brief pause.
"It's your father."
Isabella dropped the newspaper.
"What happened to him?"
"Your father has collapsed. We're doing everything we can."
She could barely breathe.
"Is he alive?"
The doctor's silence frightened her more than anything.
"Please, Miss Hayes. Come quickly."
The call ended.
Alexander was still speaking.
"Isabella? What's happening?"
She stared at the telephone.
Then she whispered the words that would haunt them both for years.
"Stay away from my family, Alexander."
And she ended the call.
But neither of them knew that Richard Hayes had not collapsed from the scandal alone. Someone had made sure he would never get the chance to expose the truth.
