Bound by Shadows

Maya barely slept that night. The city’s lights bled through the curtains, streaks of gold and silver dancing across her ceiling, but they offered no comfort. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw him Adrian Blackwood. His voice haunted her, deep and commanding, his touch lingering on her skin as though he’d branded her. She turned on her side, hugging the pillow tighter. “Get out of my head,” she whispered, but her body betrayed her, craving the very danger she swore she should avoid. When her alarm finally rang, she dragged herself out of bed, exhausted yet restless. She went through the motions of her morning, coffee in hand, but her mind was caught in a storm. By the time she reached the office, she was determined to focus on work, to lock every thought of Adrian in the deepest corner of her mind. But fate had other plans. The office buzzed as usual, colleagues tapping away at keyboards, phones ringing, printers humming. Yet, the moment Maya sat at her desk, a ripple of whispers stirred around her. Curious glances followed her, subtle but sharp, like needles prickling her skin. “Maya?” her friend Lila rushed over, her eyes wide with disbelief. “What did you do?” Maya frowned. “What are you talking about?” Lila thrust her phone forward. On the screen glared an internal memo one that announced a new corporate sponsor for the company’s upcoming charity gala. And there it was. Blackwood Enterprises. Maya’s heart plummeted. “No… no, he didn’t,” she muttered under her breath, but she already knew the truth. Adrian Blackwood had woven himself into her life once more, tightening the strings she was desperately trying to cut. “You know him?” Lila pressed, her brows arched with curiosity and suspicion. Maya shook her head quickly. “Of course not. Why would I?” But her voice cracked, betraying her. She excused herself before Lila could pry further, retreating into the safety of the restroom. Locking the door, she leaned against it, her breaths uneven. “Why won’t he leave me alone?” Her phone buzzed. She hesitated before picking it up, but the message on the screen made her blood run cold. Adrian Blackwood: You look beautiful in white today. Her gaze darted to her reflection. She was wearing her cream blouse. He was watching her. Before she could reply, another text followed. Adrian Blackwood: Dinner. Tonight. No excuses. Her fingers trembled as she typed back. I’m not yours to summon. The reply came instantly. Adrian Blackwood: You already are. You just haven’t accepted it yet. Her heart thudded painfully. She deleted the conversation, but the words etched themselves into her mind. That evening, against her better judgment, she found herself stepping into the grand lobby of the Blackwood Tower once again. The marble floor gleamed, chandeliers glittered like frozen stars, and men in tailored suits passed by, each bowing slightly at the sight of their elusive CEO’s chosen guest. Maya swallowed hard as she entered the private elevator, escorted by a silent guard. The ride up was suffocating, her reflection staring back at her from the mirrored walls wide eyes, trembling hands, but a strange, undeniable anticipation building in her chest. When the doors slid open, Adrian was waiting. Dressed in a sharp black suit, no tie, his shirt collar undone just enough to reveal the edge of his sculpted chest, he looked every bit the predator she feared him to be. Yet his eyes, those storm-gray depths, softened the moment they landed on her. “You came,” he said simply, his lips curving into the faintest smile. “I didn’t have a choice,” she whispered, though even she knew it was a lie. He stepped forward, closing the distance. “You always have a choice, Maya. But you chose me.” Her pulse quickened as he brushed a strand of hair from her face, his touch electric. “Why are you doing this to me?” she asked, her voice breaking. “You could have anyone. Why me?” Adrian’s jaw tightened, his gaze darkening with something unreadable. “Because no one else makes me feel like I’m human again.” The raw honesty in his words struck her harder than any threat. She wanted to step back, to keep the walls around her heart intact, but his presence melted her defenses. Before she could respond, the sharp ding of her phone shattered the moment. She glanced down, expecting another message from Adrian, but it wasn’t him. It was from an unknown number. Unknown: He’s dangerous, Maya. Leave before it’s too late. Her hands trembled as her eyes flicked up to Adrian, who was studying her with unsettling intensity. “Who is it?” he asked, his tone deceptively calm. Maya shook her head quickly. “No one. Just… spam.” She forced a weak smile, shoving the phone back into her purse. But Adrian’s gaze sharpened, as if he saw through the lie. “You’re keeping something from me.” “No, I” He silenced her with a finger under her chin, tilting her face up to his. His touch was gentle, but his eyes were steel. “I’ll find out. I always do.” Her heart stuttered as he lowered his head, his lips hovering inches from hers. The air between them thickened, hot and dangerous, a magnetic pull drawing her closer. Every rational thought screamed at her to pull away, but her body leaned forward, desperate for the taste of him. When his lips finally brushed hers, it was like fire igniting in her veins. The kiss was deep, claiming, a vow and a warning wrapped in one. She hated herself for responding, for clutching his shirt as though he were her anchor in a storm. But just as she surrendered, her phone buzzed again in her purse. Unknown: If you stay, you won’t survive him. Her eyes flew open, panic flooding her chest. Adrian felt her stiffen, and he pulled back, his expression darkening. “What is it?” he demanded. Maya shook her head, her breath ragged. “I… I need to go.” She stumbled back, but Adrian’s hand caught her wrist, firm and unyielding. “You’re not running from me, Maya,” he said, his voice low and dangerous. “Not anymore.” Tears burned her eyes as she whispered, “Maybe I’m not running from you. Maybe I’m running from what being with you will turn me into.” For the first time, Adrian’s mask cracked. Pain flickered in his eyes before he masked it with steel. “You’ll learn,” he said softly, almost like a promise. “You belong to me, shadows and all.” And as his grip tightened around her wrist, Maya realized the terrifying truth she wasn’t just tangled in Adrian’s world. She was already bound to him, whether by choice or by force.
