Chapter 1: The Girl Who Saved the Mafia king
The heavy rain poured relentlessly over Silvercrest City, turning the streets into rivers of shimmering lights. Thunder roared across the dark sky as people hurried home, desperate to escape the storm. Pearl Smith tightened her grip on the worn umbrella in her hand as she walked home from her evening shift at a small café. At twenty-two, life had never been easy for her. Every penny she earned helped support her family, yet her efforts were rarely appreciated. "Why can't you be more like your sister?" her mother often said. Ruby Smith, Pearl's elder sister, always received the praise, while Pearl was left with the chores, the blame, and the heartbreak. Only one person never made her feel unwanted—her grandmother. "My Pearl," Grandma Margaret would always say with a gentle smile, "your kindness will one day lead you to a life far greater than you can imagine." Pearl had laughed at those words countless times. A life greater than this? Impossible. She adjusted her backpack and continued walking through the deserted street. Suddenly— Bang! Bang! Bang! Several gunshots echoed through the night. Pearl froze. People screamed and ran in every direction. Luxury black SUVs sped past at terrifying speed before crashing into one another near an abandoned warehouse. More gunfire erupted. Without thinking, Pearl ducked behind a parked car. Her heart pounded violently. What's happening? Moments later, dozens of men dressed in black suits exchanged bullets with another group of masked attackers. It looked like something straight out of an action movie. Pearl wanted to run. She really did. Then she saw him. A tall man staggered out from behind one of the damaged SUVs. His expensive black suit was stained with blood. His sharp features remained cold despite the pain, and his piercing dark eyes carried a terrifying authority that made everyone around him instinctively fear him. Even wounded, he looked untouchable. He fired two precise shots before another bullet struck his shoulder. The man stumbled. His guards rushed toward him. "Boss!" "We have to get you out of here!" Before they could reach him, another explosion shook the area. The bodyguards were thrown backward. The mysterious man collapsed beside the roadside. Pearl stared at him. She knew she should leave. Whoever he was, he was clearly involved with dangerous people. Helping him could cost her life. She took one step backward. Then she remembered her grandmother's words. "Never ignore someone who needs help, no matter who they are." Pearl clenched her fists. "Oh, Grandma..." She rushed toward the injured stranger. The man's eyes slowly opened as she knelt beside him. "Don't move," Pearl whispered. "I'll help you." His gaze was icy. "Leave." His deep voice was weak but commanding. "You'll die if you stay." Pearl frowned. "You worry about yourself first." Ignoring his warning, she wrapped his bleeding shoulder with her scarf and helped him stand. He was unbelievably heavy. "Can you walk?" He remained silent. Another round of gunfire echoed behind them. Pearl's heartbeat quickened. She slipped one of his arms over her shoulder. "This way!" Supporting his weight, she led him into a narrow alley hidden between two old buildings. The attackers rushed past without noticing them. For several minutes, neither of them spoke. Only the sound of rain filled the silence. Finally, the man looked at her. "You're not afraid of me?" Pearl smiled faintly. "I don't even know who you are." He stared at her for a long moment. No fear. No greed. No hidden agenda. She was simply trying to save a stranger. For the first time in years, something unfamiliar stirred in Maxwell Steven's cold heart. No woman had ever looked at him without recognizing his name. No one had ever risked their life for him without expecting something in return. This girl... ...was different. Sirens echoed in the distance. Maxwell's remaining bodyguards finally found them. "Boss!" They surrounded him immediately. One of them pointed a gun at Pearl. "Who are you?" Before Pearl could answer, Maxwell spoke in a cold, commanding voice. "Lower your weapon." The guard instantly obeyed. Maxwell looked at Pearl one last time. "What is your name?" "Pearl." He repeated it quietly. "Pearl..." Before she could ask his name, another bodyguard stepped forward. "The helicopter is waiting, Boss." Boss? Pearl blinked in confusion. Who exactly had she saved? Maxwell entered the waiting vehicle without another word. As the convoy disappeared into the storm, Pearl stood alone under the rain, watching the taillights fade into the darkness. She had no idea... The man whose life she had just saved was Maxwell Steven— The world's richest billionaire. The most feared Mafia King. And the man who would soon turn her ordinary life upside down forever.
