Chapter one :The girl who ran away
Juliet had always believed that leaving was easier than explaining.
Some places held too many memories. Some streets carried too many painful reminders. Some faces reminded you of the person you used to be before life forced you to become someone else.
That was why she left.
She didn't leave because she was brave.
She left because she had no other choice.
The city she arrived in was unfamiliar. The language, the people, the buildings—it all felt different. But different was exactly what she wanted.
Nobody here knew Juliet.
Nobody knew the secrets hidden behind her quiet smiles.
Nobody knew the story she refused to tell.
She stood outside the small apartment building with her suitcase beside her, staring up at the old structure.
It wasn't the kind of place people dreamed about living in.
The walls were worn. The hallway smelled like old paint. The elevator looked like it had survived too many years.
But Juliet didn't care.
A small place was better than a place filled with painful memories.
She took a deep breath before walking inside.
"New life," she whispered.
She wanted to believe those words.
Inside the apartment, she placed her suitcase on the floor and looked around.
A tiny bedroom.
A small kitchen.
A window overlooking a city full of strangers.
For most people, it would have felt lonely.
For Juliet, it felt peaceful.
She walked toward the window, watching people move below.
Everyone had a story.
Everyone carried something.
She wondered if anyone could look at her and guess hers.
Probably not.
Because Juliet had become very good at hiding.
A few hours later, she left to buy the things she needed. She walked through the unfamiliar streets, trying to memorize her new surroundings.
On her way back, she stopped at a shop and bought something she didn't actually need.
A pair of heels.
It was a small thing, but Juliet believed small things mattered.
Sometimes a woman needed something beautiful to remind herself that she was still alive.
When she returned to the apartment building, she entered the elevator, holding the shopping bag close.
She expected to be alone.
She wasn't.
Just before the doors closed, someone stepped inside.
A man.
Tall.
Confident.
The kind of person who looked like he belonged anywhere he went.
Juliet moved aside, avoiding eye contact.
The man pressed a button and looked at her.
"You're new."
It wasn't a question.
Juliet looked at him.
"Is it that obvious?"
A small smile appeared on his face.
"Only because I know everyone in this building."
There was something warm about his voice.
Not familiar.
Just warm.
"I'm Connor," he said.
"Juliet."
For a second, their eyes met.
Connor didn't know why, but something about her caught his attention.
Maybe it was the way she looked like she was trying to be strong.
Maybe it was the sadness she tried to hide.
Or maybe it was simply the fact that he felt like there was a whole story behind her name.
The elevator stopped.
Juliet stepped out.
"Nice meeting you, Connor."
"Nice meeting you too, Juliet."
The doors closed.
Connor watched her disappear down the hallway.
He didn't know that the woman he had just met was carrying a past darker than he could imagine.
He didn't know she had come to this city looking for a new beginning.
And Juliet didn't know that this stranger in the elevator would become one of the biggest complications in her new life.
Because she came here to es
cape her past.
She never expected love to find her.
