The whisper followed Selene into her dreams.
Too late.
She woke before sunrise.
The words lingered.
Not in her ears.
Somewhere deeper.
Like a memory she had never lived.
Lucian was already awake, coaxing a small fire back to life.
He looked up as she approached.
"You slept."
"Barely."
"The voice?"
She nodded.
"It hasn't stopped."
He made room for her beside the fire.
"You don't have to face it alone anymore."
She looked at him.
She believed him.
That frightened her almost as much as the whisper.
When the sun finally rose above the trees, they returned to the ruins.
Morning revealed details darkness had hidden.
The weathered stone stood surrounded by faded carvings almost erased by time.
Seven circles.
A crescent moon.
Several wolves facing the sky.
Someone had carved this place with extraordinary care.
Someone else had spent centuries trying to erase it.
Lucian crouched beside the stone.
"These marks weren't worn away."
Selene knelt opposite him.
"They were removed."
Not by weather.
Not by time.
By hands.
Patient hands.
Someone had wanted the story forgotten.
A breeze drifted through the broken tower.
Selene reached toward the cracked circle.
Her fingers stopped just above the stone.
The whisper returned.
Not louder.
Closer.
She closed her eyes.
For one impossible heartbeat...
The world disappeared.
Moonlight covered the ruins.
The broken tower stood whole again.
Figures dressed in pale robes circled the stone.
Seven of them.
One turned.
The face remained hidden.
The figure raised a hand toward Selene.
Not in warning.
In recognition.
Then...
Everything vanished.
Selene staggered.
Lucian caught her before she fell.
"What happened?"
She struggled to breathe.
"I saw..."
She looked around the ruins.
"They were here."
"Who?"
"I don't know."
She hated the answer.
It felt too small for what she had seen.
Silence settled once more.
Then...
A sharp c***k echoed beneath their feet.
Both looked down.
The thin fracture running across one of the circles had widened.
Only slightly.
But enough for them to notice.
Neither had touched it.
Neither had moved.
The stone had changed on its own.
Lucian slowly stood.
"We're leaving."
Selene didn't argue.
Something inside her agreed.
Whatever had happened here...
It wasn't finished.
She turned to follow him.
Pain flashed through her palm.
She gasped.
Lucian spun around immediately.
"What is it?"
She opened her hand.
At first...
Nothing.
Then silver light spread across her skin like liquid moonlight.
A delicate crescent appeared in the center of her palm.
Neither of them spoke.
The mark glowed softly for only a few seconds.
Then it faded.
Leaving behind smooth, unmarked skin.
As though it had never existed.
Except...
They had both seen it.
Lucian gently took her hand.
Not to inspect it.
Simply to steady her.
His thumb brushed across her palm.
There was no mark.
No scar.
Nothing.
Yet he couldn't shake the feeling that something had changed.
Not the stone.
Not the forest.
Selene.
High above the ancient trees...
The clouds parted.
Moonlight spilled across the ruined tower.
For just an instant...
The weathered carvings shimmered.
As though acknowledging what had happened.
Then the light disappeared.
The forest fell silent once more.
And somewhere...
Hidden beyond memory...
Someone whispered a single word.
"Found."
Selene didn't hear it.
Lucian didn't either.
But the forest did.
And it remembered.
