00: On Screen Only
“Live in three… Two… One… ACTION!”
The signal was given, and the show began. The studio was alive with energy, bright lights, loud cheers, and the hum of cameras rolling. Heilith Rynessi Uchida sat poised on the plush sofa, her smile practiced yet warm, her posture elegant and composed. She and Rashid Deros Mcrea were guests on one of the country’s most popular talk show, where hosts challenged celebrities with small games and asked the questions everyone was dying to have answered.
“Welcome to our program!” the host, Tita Girly, beamed, gesturing toward the two of them. “Please give it up for our ‘Rashie Love Team’, the King and Queen of Hearts, Rashid and Heilith!”
The crowd erupted in screams, the sound echoing off the walls.
Heilith leaned forward slightly, her expression gracious and charming. “Hello! Thank you so much for having us here.” She flashed her signature radiant smile, then glanced sideways at the man beside her.
Rashid sat tall and relaxed, his presence commanding the room. He offered a polite nod, his lips curving into that faint, captivating smile that had captured millions of hearts. He looked effortlessly handsome in a tailored jacket, his dark hair falling perfectly over his forehead, his deep eyes calm and steady.
Tita Girly laughed, leaning in with a mischievous glint in her eyes. “So, tell me, my dear Heilith… is it true what everyone is saying? Are you two finally dating?”
The audience’s screams grew louder, reaching a fever pitch. For three years, they had been the country’s most beloved on-screen couple, starring in blockbuster movies and top-rating dramas. Fans had been waiting, hoping, praying that the romance they saw on screen had finally spilled over into real life.
Heilith let out a light, playful laugh, shifting slightly in her seat. “Oh, Tita Girly, you’re putting me on the spot! I thought we saved the hard questions for the end?”
“Ah, but I am one of your biggest fans!” Tita Girly insisted, clutching her chest dramatically. “And I’ve been waiting for this moment. We’ve watched you work together for three years now, always so close, always perfect together. We just can’t wait anymore! The whole nation is asking… are you two finally together?!”
Her excitement was palpable. If only you knew the truth… Heilith thought, her heart twisting slightly in her chest. She shook her head slowly, feigning innocence, while her cheeks heated up naturally, partly from the attention, mostly from the painful truth she kept buried.
Beside her, Rashid nodded slowly, a smirk playing at the corner of his lips.
The crowd roared again, thinking it was a confirmation.
Tita Girly raised an eyebrow, looking between them. “Oh, Heilith, you are in denial! But Rashid… he’s not saying no!” She clapped her hands in delight. “We caught you! Rashid already admitted it, and here you are still denying it! How cute!”
Rashid chuckled, a low, rich sound that sent whispers through the crowd. He brushed a stray lock of hair back, his eyes locking onto Heilith’s. “Here’s the thing, Tita… she kept running away from me. So I—being the persistent man that I am, just wore her down until she finally said yes.”
He laughed heartily at the story he had spun, a story designed to feed the fantasies of their fans. Heilith turned to him, playfully hitting his arm, though her touch was soft, practiced.
“In your dreams, mister—”
She stopped herself short.
“‘Mister’?” Tita Girly gasped, eyes widening. “Wait… what did you almost call him?”
Rashid’s grin widened, looking utterly pleased with himself.
“‘Boo,’” he said smoothly, leaning back like he owned the moment. “She calls me ‘Boo.’”
The studio erupted once more, fans screaming so loud it felt like the walls shook.
“Who came up with that? It’s adorable!” Tita Girly gushed.
“I did,” Rashid explained, his voice smooth and charming, his eyes never leaving Heilith’s face. “I thought everyone uses ‘babe,’ ‘baby,’ or ‘sweetie.’ I wanted something different. Besides, this one… she gets startled easily. I like calling her that, or greeting her just to see that cute, surprised look on her face. It brightens my day.” He winked at her, and for a moment, it felt so real.
Heilith felt her heart hammer against her ribs. She wanted to believe it. She wanted to believe that the warmth in his gaze was genuine, that the affection in his voice wasn’t just a performance.
But none of it was true.
Even though she had wanted it to be true for years. Even though she had loved him long before anyone knew their names.
Fate, however, had been cruel. Rashid Deros Mcrea was never meant to be hers. She knew it all too well. He loved someone else. And every smile, every touch, every sweet word between them was just part of the role they played the role of a lifetime, where only the audience was happy, and the actors were breaking inside.
The studio was hot, crowded, and filled with tension. Heilith stood near the side of the set, her patience wearing thin. It had been hours of shooting a commercial for a popular shampoo brand, yet the director Ms. Railey was far from satisfied.
“I don’t see it! There is absolutely no chemistry!” Ms. Railey shouted, pacing back and forth. “The shots look terrible! It’s flat! It’s lifeless!”
Heilith sighed, crossing her arms. She was only twenty-three then, already a rising star, confident and unapologetic about her talent. Her manager, Brix, was busy negotiating with the production team, trying to convince them to continue the shoot. They were already running late, and Heilith had another schedule to keep.
To be fair, the male model paired with her was handsome and successful in his own right, but standing next to Heilith, something was missing. She had a commanding, exotic beauty, mixed Uyghur and Japanese heritage, with features that were striking and distinct. She was one of a kind, and perhaps, no one here on Earth was really her match.
Maybe the right person is on Mars, she thought dryly.
Her stomach growled loudly, betraying her. She hadn’t eaten since morning.
“I’m starving,” she whispered to herself, rubbing her stomach. Hold on, tummy. Just a little longer.
Suddenly, one by one, the staff members began approaching her, handing her snacks, water, and sandwiches. It seemed her little whisper hadn’t been as quiet as she thought. She smiled, genuinely touched by their kindness. She took a box of cheese bread and offered it around, making sure everyone else ate too. She knew better than anyone that everyone here was exhausted.
She had just finished eating three pieces when the heavy studio doors opened.
Heilith froze mid-motion, her hand pausing in mid-air.
Walking in was a man who seemed to bring a different kind of atmosphere with him—calm, intense, and undeniably magnetic. He was tall, broad-shouldered, with thick dark hair and deep, expressive eyes.
It was Rashid Deros Mcrea.
The famous actor from a competing network. One of the most sought-after leading men in the industry.
What is he doing here? she wondered, her heart rate picking up. Did he transfer networks? Why now? And why does he look even more breathtaking in person?
She couldn’t deny it; she had admired him for years. She’d seen his films, knew his talent, and appreciated his looks more than she cared to admit. He was the definition of devastatingly handsome, strong brows, a straight nose, fair skin, and lips that looked incredibly soft.
Snap out of it, Rynessi, she scolded herself, straightening her posture. Don’t stare like a fan.
She felt a sharp gaze burning into her and looked up to see Director Railey watching her intently.
Did she catch me checking him out? Heat rose to her cheeks. Embarrassed, she looked down at her feet, then quickly walked over to where her manager and the director were standing.
“Brix, let’s go,” she whispered to her manager. “We’re late for the photoshoot.”
“Wait, hold on,” Brix said, holding her arm. “Look who’s here.”
“Rash!” Director Railey’s face lit up instantly, a bright smile spreading across her face. “I was just saying… we need chemistry. We need someone who matches her. Rash, this is Brix, Heilith’s manager. And this is Ms. Heilith Rynessi Uchida. I’m sure you’ve heard a great deal about her.”
Heilith blinked. It finally clicked. Railey… Rashid… They shared the same surname. They were siblings.
She looked at Rashid again, and this time, he was looking back. His eyes were deep and unreadable, assessing her with a quiet intensity that made her feel exposed.
He stepped forward, extending his hand. “Hi. It’s nice to meet you.”
His voice was deep, smooth, and composed, just like his public persona: cool, composed, and a little distant.
Heilith looked down at his hand, then back up at his face. She wasn’t one to shy away from a challenge, and she certainly wasn’t going to let him think she was intimidated. Instead of shaking his hand, she stepped closer, closing the gap between them with bold grace. She placed her hands lightly on his shoulders, leaned up, and pressed a soft kiss to each of his cheeks, a friendly, warm gesture, but one that felt far too intimate given they were strangers.
She felt him tense slightly under her touch, surprised by her boldness. A faint flush appeared on his high cheekbones, and for a second, the unreadable mask slipped, revealing a hint of genuine astonishment.
Lucky you, she thought, a playful smirk touching her lips. You just got a kiss from me.
“Hello, Rashid,” she said casually, pulling back just enough to look him in the eyes, feigning nonchalance even as her heart raced. She didn’t want him to know just how much of an effect he had on her. She didn’t want to look like just another girl with a crush.
“See that?!” Railey exclaimed, practically vibrating with excitement. “Did you see that?! That’s it! That’s the spark! Brix, look at them! They fit perfectly!”
Rashid stood tall, recovering quickly, though his eyes remained fixed on her, analyzing her, her beauty, her confidence, the way she carried herself like she owned every room she walked into.
“Really, Railey?” Brix asked, glancing between the two. “Then what are we waiting for? Let’s start the shoot.”
Heilith beamed. It wasn’t hard to hide her excitement. She had wanted to work with him for so long, and now, suddenly, it was happening.
“Okay, we really must hurry,” Rashid said, his voice calm and professional, though his gaze softened just a fraction as it met Heilith’s. “I wouldn’t want to keep Ms. Uchida from her schedule.”
As the crew scrambled to reset the lights and cameras, Heilith could feel everyone’s eyes on them. They whispered among themselves, the excitement palpable. They were right, she thought, watching him take his position.
They looked perfect together. Tall, striking, both possessing that unique, international beauty that set them apart. It felt like a match made in the heavens.
But as Heilith stepped closer to him, ready to play her part, she didn’t know then, three years ago, that this moment was the beginning of a beautiful, painful lie. They were destined to be the King and Queen of the industry, the most loved couple on screen, and the two people who would never truly belong to each other.
