Volume 1, Chapter 1: Enhanced Edition of the Three Kingdoms
In the first month of the first year of the Zhongping era of the Three Kingdoms period, a plague swept through the land, causing widespread suffering. A cry rang out, "The heavens are dead, the Yellow Heaven shall rise!" Zhang Jiao, the gravedigger of the Han Dynasty, urged the Han to return to heaven, plunging the world into chaos ! In this chaotic world, human life was less valuable than a dog 's. Liu Yi was somewhat better off; he was like a dog himself. Without relatives or friends, without support, he begged for mercy every day , managing to earn a meager living by doing odd jobs. One day, he wandered to Zhuo County and heard that Zhang San, a wealthy man in the county, was recruiting soldiers. He made a snap decision to try his luck, at least as a soldier he would have food and wouldn't starve. A few days later, 500,000 Yellow Turban soldiers attacked Zhuo County. The three brothers, Liu, Guan, and Zhang, were ordered to lead 5,000 troops to defeat the enemy, and Liu Yi was among them. On his first battlefield day, amidst the c*****e, Liu Yi, summoning his courage, killed ten men and was rewarded with a jar of turbid wine. Following the principle that he might not even survive the next meal, Liu Yi finished a whole jar of turbid wine in one day. The next day, on the battlefield, he felt lightheaded, as if he were flying. After only a few charges, he crashed headfirst into the enemy general's galloping horse, losing ninety-nine percent of his life. Only thanks to the sergeant's selfless act of carrying him back did he barely survive. Unfortunately, there were no doctors in the army, and the sergeant, relying on his meager skills, treated Liu Yi's wounds with bone-setting and massage, causing Liu Yi to scream like a pig being slaughtered, eventually fainting. "Sergeant, you've fought for so many years, have you ever saved anyone?" "It's better to give him a quick death than to be tortured to death by you." A passing soldier chuckled, and someone even handed him a knife. "How can medical skills improve without practice? Once I've accumulated enough experience, I'll definitely be able to save someone next time." The sergeant tossed the knife aside and scraped a layer of herbal ash from the bottom of the stove. The ash of herbs was said to be the essence of heaven and earth, capable of curing all ailments. The squad leader chanted incantations, dissolved the ash in water, and gave it to Liu Yi to drink. Surprisingly, Liu Yi didn't die the next day; his injuries had miraculously healed. "I saved a life! I finally saved a life! Hahaha, I'm going to become a military doctor!!!" the squad leader laughed heartily, boasting to everyone he met about his medical skills. However, no one believed him, saying that Liu Yi was just incredibly lucky, having survived the torture inflicted by the Ox-Headed Demon and the squad leader himself. Of course, Liu Yi wasn't lucky; he had actually died before drinking the ash the previous night. The current Liu Yi was the transmigrator Liu Yi. Upon arriving in this world, Liu Yi initially thought he was dreaming. He slept and slept, but the dream wouldn't end. It wasn't until the squad leader brought him a bowl of water full of ash and forced him to drink that Liu Yi finally believed he had truly transmigrated. He wondered what sins he had committed in his past life to have transmigrated to such a chaotic world. Liu Yi dared not make a sound, fearing his transmigrator identity would be revealed. He endured the nausea and drank herbal ash for three days straight. Fortunately, they won several battles during these days, and the Third General generously rewarded the army. After finishing the herbal ash, the squad leader even managed to get him some meat broth, which saved his life. Once he recovered slightly, he roamed the military camp, adhering to the principle of listening more and speaking less, secretly gathering information. Liu Yi knew very little about his life; the army only said he was a vagrant, and they knew nothing about his parents, his place of origin, or whether he had any relatives. It wasn't until Liu Yi heard that the Third General's surname was Zhang, his given name was Fei, and his courtesy name was Yide, that he realized he had transmigrated to the late Eastern Han Dynasty and become a lowly soldier under Zhang Fei. Liu Yi was instantly excited. He might not know about other places, but here, with his knowledge, he could save Liu Bei decades of detours. Wouldn't Liu Bei surely bestow upon him a title and a high position?! However, Liu Yi quickly realized how naive his idea was. Leaving aside whether Liu Bei would believe his knowledge of the future, or whether he'd be considered crazy, he currently had no chance to even see the centurion, let alone Liu Bei. Liu Yi was filled with worry. In this chaotic world, human life was cheap, and with his current abilities, survival was virtually impossible. Most importantly, Liu Yi discovered that this world seemed different from the late Eastern Han Dynasty he knew, but he couldn't quite put his finger on the difference. Several days later, Liu Yi finally recovered. One day, with nothing to do, he wanted to bask in the sun, thinking that even if he couldn't bump into Liu Bei, seeing General Zhang Fei would be nice. But as soon as he reached the open space, horns blared throughout the camp. "Liu Yi, what the hell are you running around for? Grab your weapons and come with me! War is breaking out!" "Huh?" Liu Yi instantly got goosebumps. After all these days since he transmigrated, was he finally going to the battlefield? But he was a modern man. He could kill a chicken with a dozen or so cuts and the chicken would still run around the yard a dozen times, bleeding profusely. Now he was being asked to go to the battlefield and kill people? "Captain, my injuries haven't healed yet. You have to take care of me!" Liu Yi's voice changed, his fear was palpable. "You've been injured once, why are you so cowardly? Don't be a coward. Follow me. Once we're on the battlefield, just remember to stay away from the generals." "Why should I stay away from the generals?" He didn't dare ask that question, afraid of being discovered for his ignorance. He could only follow the captain's steps and nervously ask, "Who are we going to fight this time?" "Who else could it be? The imperial army is besieging the Yellow Turban rebels and Quyang. Today is the decisive battle. Why do you, a mere soldier, care so much? Just follow me and charge. Cut down any Yellow Turban soldiers you see, and hide from any mounted captains or generals. If you survive, I'll treat you to meat soup!" Decisive battle? Liu Yi was inexplicably excited, but the thought of the bloody scenes on the battlefield made him tremble all over. He had considered deserting, but there was no chance. He was inexplicably swept up by the army and brought to the battlefield. Bugles sounded, drums thundered, and the shouts and cries of battle were exhilarating. Liu Yi gripped a tetanus knife, dull enough to cut tofu, tightly in the crowd, his heart pounding. "Charge!" With a thunderous roar, the surrounding men charged forward, and Liu Yi had no choice but to follow. He was already here; what else could he do? Fortunately, he was relatively strong. Carefully following the centurion and picking off stragglers shouldn't be too dangerous. It was just war, after all. Ancient cold weapons were nothing more than street brawls, nothing compared to the brutality and bloodshed of firearms. If he put in the effort and picked off a few stragglers, maybe he could get promoted through military merit. Thinking this way, Liu Yi calmed down, even feeling a little hopeful. He followed closely behind the centurion, gripping his tetanus knife, ready to pick off any stragglers he could. However, Liu Yi hadn't gone far when he sensed something was wrong. Boom! A clap of thunder sounded, and Liu Yi looked up, his eyes nearly popping out of their sockets. He finally knew what was wrong! A general galloped past on a warhorse, his crescent blade flashing, unleashing a ten-zhang-long streak of cold light. Wherever the light passed, a dozen Yellow Turban soldiers instantly turned into a shower of severed limbs! The blade swung again, and another dozen Yellow Turban soldiers howled as they were reduced to countless pieces of flesh and blood, flying into the sky. Nothing could stop them; soldiers perished under the blade's gleam, a rain of blood and severed limbs falling from the sky—a truly shocking scene. One step, ten men; a thousand miles, no trace left? Liu Yi was utterly stunned. He now understood why the squad leader had told him to stay away from mounted generals. Was this even human? He was a god of death, a demon! Rumble! Just as he was filled with fear, thunder roared again. Liu Yi looked up, trembling, and saw a fierce storm raging. Thick clouds formed a swirling vortex in the sky, and bolts of lightning, like wildly flashing giant snakes, crackled and fell from the clouds. He faintly heard someone roaring amidst the wind and thunder in the distance. "The Azure Heaven is dead, the Yellow Heaven shall rise! Thunder God and Lightning Goddess, heed my command!" "Crack!" A bolt of lightning tore through the sky. Before Liu Yi could react, a bolt of lightning swept towards his location. Crackling and deafening! Wherever the lightning struck, countless soldiers screamed as they were sent flying, burning. In the blink of an eye, at least a hundred soldiers died instantly, turning into charred corpses! "Damn it!" Liu Yi steadied himself, barely dodging the lightning's range and saving his life. The quartermaster ahead, charging too fast, was struck by the lightning and instantly flung into the air, his entire body engulfed in flames. It took him three full breaths to fall from the sky, landing precisely not far from Liu Yi, his body smoking, emitting a strange, roasting aroma. Liu Yi swallowed hard, his heart nearly stopping. What the hell was going on? A general could sweep away thousands of troops, and a soldier could command wind and lightning? Could this be the late Eastern Han Dynasty?!
