As Caleb exited Aiden’s office he wracked his brain for a way to deal with his current situation. He stood outside the office for a few seconds like an i***t, but nothing came to mind. There was not a single reason he could come up with (that would make sense) to get out of his current predicament. He needed to get to his lab and he needed security protection while he worked on engineering a vaccine. An enforcer from his pack was assigned to be said security detail. It was as simple as that. There was no way out of it unless he admitted that the enforcer identified was his fated mate and he had no intentions of mating her and hence it would be awkward to say the least, of them spending so much time together. He was not ready to deal with the fallout of that becoming public knowledge.
He was sure Aiden would understand and sympathize with him. But he knew for a fact his sisters would skin him alive.
To avoid all of that unnecessary drama, he’d have to suck it up and cope.
“Are you sure you’re cool with me being your bodyguard?” Serena asked. His mate’s question jarred him out of his inner debate.
“Yeah, I’m cool with it,” Caleb lied. “I’ll meet you downstairs. I just need to run to my room and grab my laptop.”
“Okay, I’ll see you in a few then.”
“Okay.”
“Okay.”
Caleb opened his mouth to say okay again but, thankfully, snapped it shut at the last minute. He’d already sounded like enough of a moron for one morning.
