Chapter Forty-Eight

212 Words
Caleb knew he was being an asshole but at this point, he had to do everything in his power to prevent Serena from being his bodyguard. He could not spend countless hours of time trapped with her in his lab. He would not survive. “Caleb,” Aiden said threateningly. Caleb blew out a deep breath, his shoulders slumping. He knew when he had crossed the line and he was in no more for Aiden to show his dominance and command him as the alpha, so he would quit complaining and comply. He was a big wolf, he would just have to man up and toughen it out. Besides, his research was important and he couldn’t afford to waste any more time. “I can trade shifts with someone else if that would make you feel more comfortable.” His eyes whipped in Serena’s direction. “Huh?” Caleb was staring at her luscious lips instead of her eyes, so when her lips curled down into a frown, his stomach hollowed inside him. He literally felt physical pain having hurt his mate’s female. “I said I can trade shifts with another enforcer if that will make you feel more comfortable.” Caleb’s head was shaking back and forth before he’d even thought it all the way through. “No, that’s okay. I’m sorry for being a d**k. I know for Alaric to have allowed you to join the enforcers in such a short time, you must really be badass and I apologize for implying otherwise.” “Okay. Apology accepted. So are we good to leave now? I was told that your research is time-sensitive,” she stated. “Yeah, are you good now?” Aiden questioned. There was a hint of threat in his voice letting Caleb know he better be good or else. He shot Aiden an apologetic nod before focusing on Serena’s mouth again. “Yeah, I’m good. We can leave.” Serena turned toward Aiden. “Is there anything else you needed before we left, Alpha?” Aiden shook his head in the negative. “No, we’re good here, just stay alert.” Serena faced Caleb again, her lips tipped into a half-smile. “I’ll go pull around to the front and wait for you.” Serena was halfway to the door when Caleb blurted out, “You’re not driving.” Slowly she turned around “and why not?” she asked, arching her left eyebrow. A lack of appropriate reply saw Caleb saying “never mind, I’ll meet you in front.” Because really, what could he say? He’d rather they take separate cars? That being in the same vehicle with her would wreak havoc on his senses? That he would not be able to keep his wolf contained if he had to breathe the same air as her? None of those responses sounded appropriate, so he just kept his mouth shut. Serena shook her head. “Okay.” Aiden turned to Caleb, “now that all of that unnecessary drama is all settled, you two can be on your way so I can get on with my day.” Caleb flipped his cousin the bird before following his mate out the door.
