Chapter Forty-Seven

212 Words
Caleb knew it was cowardly to ignore the mate bond between them. But he wasn’t sure what else to do. He had his reasons why he didn’t want to be mated. He wasn’t sure if he would ever be ready to mate. He also knew he needed to have a conversation with her expressing his feelings on the matter. He was sure she was being affected by the bond as much as he was and was probably wondering why he hadn’t approached her. Until he figured out how best to deal with this situation he would continue to ignore her. Was that cowardly? Yes… definitely. But he was beyond caring at this point. He had zero room in his life for this kind of complication. Unfortunately for Caleb’s plans of avoidance and ultimately his peace of mind, he was equal parts upset and excited to see Serena again. He felt like a high school girl with her crush and it was irritating, to say the least. “Caleb?” He jerked his eyes away from Serena’s bountiful breasts where he’d been staring for the past couple of minutes while his brain went haywire. “Huh?” Aiden frowned. “What’s going on?” He shook his head to clear the cobwebs, his traitorous eyes darting toward Serena once more. He made sure to keep them away from her gaze though. “Oh. Uh. Sorry to interrupt. I’m just stopping by to see if you’ve identified the enforcer who will be shadowing me for the next few weeks. If you can call them up, that would be great. I’m running late as is.” Aiden’s frown deepened. “Are you feeling alright? You seem off.” “Yes. I’m fine. Just need to hit the road as soon as possible. So can you call the enforcer?” “That wouldn’t be necessary,” Aiden responded. Caleb narrowed his eyes at his younger cousin. “Why not? I thought it was your idea or rather your insistence that I have a bodyguard while I work on engineering the vaccine.” Aiden rolled his deep blue eyes in exasperation, “I hope you are no longer objecting to the extra security. I’ve already identified the enforcer, and the reason why I don’t need to make any calls is that she is right here.” Caleb sighed and crossed his arms over his chest. “Aiden, you insist I have a bodyguard and you assign to me a she-wolf? Are you being serious right now?” He held up a hand. “Caleb, don’t be a d**k. You know damn well she-wolves are more than capable of handling themselves. That’s one of the things we are most proud of in this pack, is the fact that our she-wolves are as tough and in some cases tougher than our male wolves.” “No. I don’t accept this. Choose another enforcer. Of all the enforcers in the pack, why am I stuck with the newbie?”
