The pack was aware that a group of rogue wolves were seeking to expose the wolf community and were doing everything in their power to undermine the strength of the council.
They had been working in the shadows for years now. From attempting to create their own breed of wolves to engineering viruses targeted at preventing she-wolves from giving birth and even going so far as to create diseases to wipe out the wolf pups.
No one was sure who was heading the gang or what their end game was, but the pack had received reliable information that they were the next target. So it was imperative Caleb completed his research in the shortest possible time. It meant the ultimate demise or survival of his pack.
Arriving at Aiden’s office, he knocked on the door and waited to be invited in.
“Come in.”
“Hey, Aiden, have you identified the enforcer –”
Caleb stopped short the moment he entered the alpha’s office, his question evaporating from his mouth almost immediately. That was a direct result of who was in the office with Aiden. Sitting in front of the alpha’s desk was the one wolf in the entire pack he was trying his best to avoid.
Serena McAlister.
His fated mate.
He silently cursed himself as he stood there, face aghast and jaw locked tight. This shouldn’t have happened. His wolf senses should have alerted him to her presence even before he entered the room. He could only blame his inattentiveness on his exhaustion. If he’d been paying more attention, he wouldn’t be in this situation.
Now that he’d been made aware of her presence, the mate bond was working overtime to pull him to her. Shortly after Serena had joined the Silver Lake pack, he’d realized that once they were in close proximity, he could feel her. Regardless of whether or not they were in the same room, he could sense her. It was a deeper sensation – something in the pit of his stomach that tugged on him whenever she was close.
He would need more time to develop the habit of tuning into that reaction and using it to his advantage so that he could successfully ignore and avoid her. With Serena living on pack lands, once Caleb was around the feeling never really went away.
