Chapter ThreeIt was still a beautiful day for a ball game, and the sun still shone brightly when the ambulance arrived to transport Rico to a nearby hospital. It had taken four minutes after the 911 operator dispatched it, and nine minutes later the attendants wheeled Rico into the Emergency Room of Advocate Trinity Hospital. He had been right about the range of the shotgun. Although the man wielding it had managed to empty both barrels before Rico dropped him, none of the buckshot found its mark. Instead, the blasts only kicked up swirls of dust and gravel close enough to Rico that he felt the sting of a slew of stones and specks of gravel against his legs, but nothing broke the skin.
