Michael POV:
Two weeks had passed since the wedding and it had been two weeks since he had seen Amber. After the first week he had Bobby trail her the entire day to find out what was going on. Michael did not like sharing what was his. He had an inkling he knew what she was doing, she was avoiding him and he wanted to know why.
That day when Bobby came back with a report Michael was surprised. Since he had bought the company that she worked for he knew that she worked almost 13 hour days, and even though she didn't have to go into the office she was choosing to. “She goes to work and buries herself in it. She doesn't really talk to anyone and seems to be isolating herself. Once finished for the day, she goes and visits her mother at the clinic. She seems to know that it may not be much longer for her mother.”
Michael thought this over. Very well if she was going to avoid him he would make it impossible for her to do so. He smiled at Bobby, “make arrangements im going to visit my mother in law. Later that day he was standing outside in his mother in law's room. She was reading a book, something that he suspected that Amber had gotten from her mother. She never talked about her father and he knew why. But he would save that for when she was ready.
He walked into the room. “Hello, my name is Michael Blackstone. It's a pleasure to meet you.” She looked up from her book surprised to see someone in her room. “Um Hello Mr. Blackstone, can I help you find the person you're looking for?” So his wife and not told her mother they were married, not that surprising he mused, since it had been so sudden and unexpected for Amber.
“I came to visit you, Mrs. Whitlock. He stated. That definitely had her shocked. “Ok well what can I do for you?” he smiled that exact same line that Amber had used when he first met her. “I was wondering if there was anything that I could help you with? I'm starting a new program here at the clinic and thought it would help the patients with long term cancer.” she half smiled but it didn't reach her eyes. “I'm afraid I don't have much longer. The Doctor came in this morning with the latest lab report you see. She paused as if just saying the words were hard. “But I do appreciate you coming all the way here to try.”
Just then Amber walked into the room, she looked from Michael to her mother and didn't know what to say. “Mom, is Mr. Blackstone bothering you? And she finally looked at Micheal to glare at him. He smiled. “I was just getting to know Mrs. Whitlock” he stated. I was just about to invite her to dinner with me” ,
”Well I don't think it's a good idea for her to travel at this time.” Amber dead panned to him.” Not a problem”, he waved at his men who had been standing off to the side in the hallway. “I've had it catered. Mrs Whitlock what do you say? Would you like to have dinner with me? Amber is more than welcome to join us as well. There is plenty of food.”
Mrs. Whitlock smiled, “anything beats the food here.” she said as she put her book down. “Wonderful!” he waved the man in and he started setting up the dinner. It was a full meal with all the trimmings and even cheesecake for dessert. “This looks lovely Mrs. Whitlock stated, as she sat down at the table and grabbed a spoon and started filling her plate. He smiled at Amber, she seemed to debate on what to do but he heard the growl of her stomach that betrayed her.
She finally sat down and helped herself to some food. After she had been seated he sat down himself. And grabbed some himself. They ate in peaceful silence for a few moments. It was "Mrs Whitlock who broke the silence. “Amber do you know Mr. Blackstone?” “Amber seemed to freeze with a fork full of food half way to her mouth. She slowly put her fork down and looked between her mother and Michael. “I worked with him at the company” she lied.
So she wasn't going to tell her mother the truth, well he would just have to do something about that he thought. “Yes, Mrs Whitlock Amber here was a huge help at the company drawing up some figures a month ago.”
“Please call me Ellie” she said “that's my girl always working and always striving for the best.” she stated as she smiled at her daughter. He could tell she wanted more for her daughter, more than just work for her. He knew that Amber had very few friends and the ones she did have she only talked to once a month or so. She was either at work or here with her mother.
