It was the fourth year since she had been raising the cub alone when the cub's biological father came to her door.

The well-dressed man stood at the doorway and asked her, "Are you Elena?"

"…Yes."

"I’m the cub’s father," the man said in a domineering and forceful tone. "Come with me. Don’t even think about refusing or resisting—those are meaningless things."

Elena stared at his face, which was eerily similar to their son’s, and drawled out a lazy "Oh". In fact, she hadn’t even… thought about refusing or resisting at all.

—

On the surface, Kai was the head of the wealthy Voss family; secretly, he was the leader of the werewolf clan. Three days earlier than his scheduled rutting period, he had a s****l encounter with a pure human woman who had wandered into the wrong room.

Werewolves only had one mate in their lifetime, but he despised unfaithful pure humans who were half-hearted, so he refused to go look for her.

Then one day, he heard the cry of a cub. Only then did he learn that the pure human woman had given birth to his cub—and the werewolf cub was going through a difficult phase of bone development.

For the sake of the cub, he took the mother and son back to his manor in the Republic of Aslan.

At first, he said coldly, "I have no interest in you. We’re just the cub’s parents." "All I care about is my cub."

They took turns dropping off and picking up the cub from kindergarten every day, attended the parent-child activities held by the school together, and even went to parent-teacher conferences as a pair. During Thanksgiving, they took the cub to their villa in the suburbs for the holiday, decorating pumpkins and preparing a turkey feast together.

One day, Elena went on a date. The man was shocked and enraged—and only then did he realize his true feelings for her.

He used taking the cub to the amusement park or skiing in the snow-capped mountains as excuses to cut off all her dates. He even searched frequently for "How to pursue a human woman".

He gave her a downtown apartment, a limited-edition sports car, high-end custom handbags, a private jet… but none of these worked.

When the agreed-upon time came, the woman left with the cub. The arrogant werewolf clan leader and head of the Voss family was completely crushed.

The Biological Father Shows Up
The tall, cold man stood at the doorway, dressed impeccably. He asked, "Your name is Elena?" "…Yes." "Do you have a red birthmark on your right breast?" A flush rose to Elena’s cheeks, and a flicker of anger flashed in her eyes. Asking such a question to someone you’d just met was incredibly offensive. But if he were trying to be a creep, his expression was far too indifferent—his voice held no emotion at all, making him seem more like an interrogator than a womanizer. Yet how could this man know about the birthmark on her right breast… Seemingly sensing her embarrassment, the man fell silent for a moment. His gaze locked onto hers as he spoke again, "Four years ago, at the Royal City Hotel—did you walk into the wrong room?" Elena’s heart jolted, and she looked up sharply. She would never forget that night that had changed her life—without it, she would have never gotten pregnant, let alone had her child now. "How could you possibly know about that…" The man pressed his lips together. His tone was calm, yet carried an unshakable certainty: "I was the one that night." Elena’s eyes widened. She opened her mouth, but no words came out. Five years earlier, she’d been a sophomore in college. After a friend’s birthday party, she’d stumbled back to the hotel, dizzy with alcohol, and walked into the wrong room—then climbed into the wrong bed. In her drunken haze, she’d thought she saw a large black "dog" lying on the bed. Elena had always loved cats and dogs, but had never been able to keep one while living with relatives. That night, her courage had surprised even herself—she’d climbed onto the bed and started "petting the dog," not fearing being bitten at all. She couldn’t remember much of what happened next—only that the "dog" had disappeared, and in its place was an extraordinarily handsome man. She’d thought she was having a wet dream from being single for too long, so she’d gone along with it. It wasn’t until before dawn, when a phone call jolted her awake, that her world shattered. She’d learned her great-aunt—the woman who’d raised her for ten years—had passed away. Panic had overwhelmed her, and when she’d gotten out of bed, she’d realized she was completely naked. A man lay beside her, his back turned. It hadn’t been a dream. But grief had overshadowed everything. She’d hurried to get dressed, not even glancing at the man’s face. Ignoring the discomfort in her body, she’d fled the hotel. Elena had lost her parents as a child, bouncing from one relative’s home to another until she was ten, when her great-aunt had taken her in and given her a stable life. She’d planned to take good care of her great-aunt after graduation, never imagining the woman would leave her at seventy. Despair had hung over her like a dark cloud—until the doctor told her she was pregnant: "You have a rare fertility condition. This child might be your only chance." So Elena had taken a break from college. She’d never had a real "home"—the warmth of her relatives’ families had always excluded her; she’d always been the one standing on the sidelines. But now, she could have a child of her own. Her great-aunt’s old house had been taken back by the woman’s children. Elena had rented a cheap apartment while pregnant, working multiple jobs to scrape by. In her hardest days, she’d strapped her baby to her back while working—and just hearing his gurgles and laughter from behind had made all the hardship worth it. She’d never once thought the man who’d been nothing but a mystery would suddenly show up at her door. At that moment, the man glanced at the shabby hallway and rusted railings. His eyebrows furrowed almost imperceptibly: "You’ve been raising our child in a place like this all these years?" Elena hummed in response—she’d actually been planning to move; the new apartment she’d bought was already ready for occupancy. "My name is Kai," the man said, his deep voice giving no hint of his emotions. "I’ve come to take you and the child away—to a better place." His tone was flat, but his eyes sharpened upward. His dark pupils were cold, lacking any warmth—unlike a human’s eyes. Elena knew that look well—her son sometimes had the same empty gaze, his black eyes shining like cold obsidian, sharp as a predator’s. It sent a shiver down her spine. For no reason, she thought of wolves. In twenty-five years of life, she’d only seen that look in two people: the man before her, and her son. "How did you find me here?" Elena stared at Kai. Perhaps she’d grown used to her son’s eyes, because she didn’t feel scared at all. "That night… were you in a ‘special state’?" Kai fell silent for two seconds, then ** ed: "You can think of it that way." In truth, that night had been his annual mating cycle—though it had come three days early. He’d checked into a nearby hotel to wait for his clan’s support, never expecting a human woman to burst in. She’d touched and held him all over—even his ears and tail, which he’d struggled to hide when he lost control. Kai’s grandfather had been human, so he carried a small amount of human genes. Pure humans weren’t the only beings in this world. The werewolf clan had lived for generations in the distant, frigid snow-capped mountains—until his grandmother had been drawn to human cities, descended the mountains, and met his grandfather. Werewolves chose one mate for life, never straying. Even if they had to endure the pain of soaking in the snow mountain’s cold springs during their mating cycle each year, they would never take a random partner. Yet because his mating cycle had come early, he’d slept with an aggressive human woman. Later, his clansmen had told him that when they’d gone to the hotel to pick him up, the room had been empty—the woman had already run away. To Kai, this had confirmed humans’ frivolity. He’d planned to never look for her, even if it meant spending his life alone. That was until last night—the night of the full moon. He’d clearly heard the cry of a young wolf. Following the scent of his own bloodline, he’d found his child. Werewolf cubs at the age of four and a half must drink the cold spring water from the peak of the snow-capped mountains; otherwise, their bones would ache unbearably as they developed, and human medicine would be completely useless. He’d spent the entire night finding Elena. At first, he’d only wanted to take the child away—but after seeing how hard she’d worked to raise the child alone all these years, he’d changed his mind. He would take both mother and son. "Don’t even think about refusing or resisting—those are meaningless," Kai’s patience ran out, his tone turning firm. "I won’t let my child live in a place like this. All you need to do is nod. Understand?" Elena stared at his face—so similar to their son’s—and drawled out an "Oh." In truth, she’d never planned to refuse. Only a fool would pass up such an opportunity. Now that the child’s biological father had shown up, she had no reason to stop him from fulfilling his "fatherly duties." She turned and walked into the house: "First, I want to see the paternity test between you and the child." "Fine," Kai replied bluntly. "Where are we moving? I need to make sure it’s suitable." Kai hadn’t expected her to be so "reasonable." His expression softened slightly: "Southwind Manor, halfway up Green Mountain, in the Republic of Aslan." "Come in and sit." Kai hesitated for a moment, then stepped inside. The apartment was dimly lit, with yellowed walls. In the small space—no more than a few dozen square meters—an old sofa, a green inflatable horse, and children’s educational stickers on the wall all spoke of a life that was poor yet warm. The height marks by the door reached his thigh—his child wasn’t short, which made sense, since Kai himself was 196cm tall. The air smelled of the cub’s milky scent, and Kai’s eyes softened for a moment. Just then, there was a noise from the bedroom, followed by the cub’s whimpering growl—soft, like a baby’s. He walked over slowly and stood at the doorway. On the bed, the little boy was only wearing a white short-sleeve shirt that reached his knees. His chubby face was flushed red, and his black eyes stared fiercely at Kai. He opened his mouth to reveal two tiny fangs, letting out an "ow-woo" threat. Kai knew well why the child was acting this way—the four-and-a-half-year-old werewolf cub was in agony from his developing bones, having no cold spring water to soothe him. As a human, Elena would only think her son had a fever. The cub’s growl suddenly cut off. Two fluffy little wolf ears popped out from under his black soft hair. Panicked, he quickly covered them with his chubby hands, then stuck his butt up and hid under the quilt—forgetting to tuck away the small tail behind him. "Open your mouth and take three deep breaths," Kai said, his tone softening without him realizing it—he was teaching the child to control his form. The cub froze for a moment, then followed his instruction. His small tail disappeared instantly. Just then, Elena walked in, her voice lowered: "Mr. Kai, the child is sleeping. Don’t wake him—he’s not feeling well." She glanced at the small bulge under the quilt and called softly: "Baby, are you awake? Are you still hurting?" The little boy peeked his head out. His face turned even redder from nervousness, and his forehead was covered in sweat. Elena thought his fever had gotten worse; her eyes immediately welled up with tears. "Why is it getting worse? Let’s go to the hospital—I’ll take you right now!" Over the past two weeks, she’d taken him to more than a dozen hospitals. Every doctor had said there was nothing wrong with him—some had even questioned her mental state. But she knew her baby was suffering. Every night, he would clutch her hand tightly, trembling in pain. She couldn’t take his suffering away from him, and that helplessness was crushing her. "I know what’s wrong with him," Kai’s voice rang out at the right moment. "And I can cure him." He paused, then added, "He has features no human has. You must have seen them, right?" Elena’s body stiffened. She held the child tighter. At that moment, the cub in her arms seemed to lose his strength—his little wolf ears popped out again. He burrowed into Elena’s arms, helpless: "Mommy, don’t look… ow… don’t look…" "It’s okay," Elena kissed the child’s small ears, her tears falling onto his soft hair. "Mommy thinks they’re cute. I’m not scared at all. I’ve known for a while, baby. Mommy loves you more than anything." The cub gradually calmed down. Looking into Elena’s gentle eyes, he smiled, revealing his tiny fangs. Soon after, he fell fast asleep. Once the child was completely asleep, Elena wiped her tears and looked at Kai: "I don’t care if you’re a werewolf or something else. All I want is for my child to be healthy." That night, Elena didn’t even have time to pack much. She took her child and left with Kai. The manor on Green Mountain was more luxurious than she could have imagined. Deep underground, there was even an ice chamber—built by Kai at great cost, its temperature kept perpetually freezing. In the center of the chamber, a small pool of blue water glistened—it was cold spring water Kai had brought back from the peak of the snow-capped mountains long ago. Elena sat in the unfamiliar, beautiful room, her eyes fixed only on her son’s flushed cheeks. She didn’t even have the energy to notice the exquisite decorations around her. As soon as Kai entered, she ran toward him like a drowning person clutching a lifeline: "Mr. Kai, did you bring the ‘medicine’?" She was too close. Kai frowned instinctively: "Stay away from me." Werewolves were extremely sensitive about distance from the opposite s*x—they only allowed intimacy with their mates. He stepped around Elena and walked toward the bed, a hint of disdain in his voice: "Humans are always so impulsive, eager to get close at the drop of a hat." Elena didn’t have the energy to argue. Her eyes were fixed on the jade bottle in Kai’s hand. He opened the lid, and a wisp of white mist instantly drifted out: "Wake the child up." Elena gently shook the child in her arms: "Baby, wake up for a moment. Drink this, and the pain will go away." The little boy opened his eyes groggily. Kai brought the bottle to his lips, and the child latched on like he was clutching a lifeline, drinking the cold spring water in big gulps until the bottle was empty. "One bottle a day. He won’t hurt tonight," Kai reached out and patted the child’s head. "I’ll stay with him," Elena insisted. Kai glanced at her heavy dark circles, then curled his lips: "Do as you wish." With that, he turned and left—he didn’t want to touch this human woman, but since she was the child’s mother, he would ask one of the werewolf maids in the manor to come and take care of her later. That night, Elena didn’t sleep a wink. Watching her child sleep soundly through the night, her tense nerves finally relaxed. Exhaustion washed over her, and she collapsed onto the white carpet beside the bed, falling asleep instantly. At seven in the morning, Kai walked into the room. He paused when he saw Elena sleeping on the floor. First, he checked on the child to make sure he was okay. Then he turned and left—without glancing at Elena again. He only thought to tell a maid to come and carry her to the guest room.
