Crap, a Mysterious Package
Sheila's phone sat next to her bed on the nightstand. It vibrated and rang from the alarm. Next to the nightstand, beautiful streaks of orange sun rays washed in through the window and illuminated Sheila's sleeping face. The alarm blared on for minutes.
Her eyes flung open.
"Crap!"
Sheila threw away the covers and launched for her bathroom without even turning off the alarm. She knew she was late. This was the fourth time she was going to get late for work. Her boss won't be happy.
Sheila quickly showered, brushed her teeth, folded her hair into a rough ponytail and slipped into her work uniform; orange overalls, which she collected from the floor. She found one of her boots and planted her foot in. She hopped around on one leg as she tried to wear it at the same time looking for the other one.
Her room was a mess, with books and clothes and chew toys scattered all over the place. Her walls were covered with wallpapers from her favorite rock bands and movies.
The door burst open and Nova rushed in, panting and tail wagging, always excited to see Sheila. Nova was a big German shepherd. She dashed right into Sheila, sending her crashing hard onto the floor.
"Damnit Nova, it's not play time I need to find my other shoe. I'm super late for work," Sheila groaned as she stood up.
Nova barked at the boot on the bed.
Sheila stared at it for a second.
"s**t how'd that get there," she said. She took an slipped it on while patting Nova. "Thanks bud."
She grabbed her phone and car keys.
"I am so going to be fired Nova," Sheila said as she rushed out of her bedroom and into the kitchen.
She poured Nova's breakfast into a plastic bag she found under the fridge. Nova stared at her curiously.
"No time to eat here Nova, you'll eat in the van," Sheila said. "Come on, let's go."
Sheila rushed to the parking lot with Nova, whom she carried into the passenger seat. She then got in and revved the engine.
"Hold on tight cowboy," Sheila said. "We're about to get fast and furious."
Sheila turned on the MP3 player and Red Mist by Daring Demons blasted from the speakers as she did a reverse and sped away.
She wove through traffic and corners like a madwoman, even driving through red lights.
But that didn't stop her from being late.
Her van screeched into the parking lot of the FST Delivery company building.
"Stay here," Sheila told Nova. "If I come back with a crate of beer, just know I'm fired."
Sheila got out and rushed past security, reception and into her station, where she would pick up a list of orders from Jonathan, get to the storage house, pick the packages on her list and begin delivering them across town.
Jonathan was old, like fifty-old, with glasses.
"Hi Jonathan, sorry I'm late," Sheila started.
Jonathan looked at Sheila over his glasses. He studied her for an uncomfortable brief moment that seemed to last hours.
"You shouldn't be apologizing to me. Save it for the boss. He's expecting you in his office," Jonathan said.
Sheila froze.
"Ah s**t," Sheila said under her breath. Her heart started racing. She turned and headed towards her boss's office. "I am definitely losing my job."
She reached the door and hung around outside for a moment, pacing about with anxiety as she prayed to whoever that she wouldn't get fired. She finally gained courage and knocked.
"Come in," a hoarse, muffled voice from inside said. It sent shivers down Sheila's bones.
Sheila slowly opened the door and got in. She closed it and meekly approached her boss's desk. A name tag with "Craig" on it sat on one side of his desk.
Craig put aside the files he was perusing and looked up at Sheila, who stood, hands clasped together. He gestured to the seat.
"Have a seat Sheila," Craig said.
Sheila sat.
"Mr. Craig I am so so sorry for being so late I promise it won't happen again and if it happens again you can then fire me but please I need this job," Sheila begged.
Craig raised an eyebrow.
"What are you talking about?" he asked.
Sheila raise her eyebrows in surprise.
"Wait you didn't call me here to fire me?" Sheila asked.
"Why would I do that?" Craig said. "Did you just say that you were late today?"
"Um," Sheila looked away and then back at Craig. She managed a goofy smile "No?"
Craig glared for a moment.
"Anyway," he said. "There's a special package I need you to deliver to..."
"Done," Sheila said, standing up. "I'll do it."
"Sheila you don't understand, this is not your usual delivery," Craig said. "I need you to be very careful with it. A security team will also be accompanying you."
"No problem, Mr. Craig, you can trust me," Sheila quickly said. Her fake smile hid the question bouncing around in her head. 'Did you just say a security team?'
The longer she stayed there, the better chance of Craig having to bring up the topic of her being late again.
Craig stared at Sheila curiously as he pulled out a key.
"Okay, here are the keys to the truck. Be very careful with the package and make sure you follow the security team's instructions. These people are paying a very large sum of money. Once the package is delivered, you will receive your cut."
"Thank you, Craig," said Sheila. "Have a good day."
"My day will be good when you deliver that package. Now go," said Craig.
Sheila turned and quickly walked out. The door banged.
Outside, Sheila pumped her first in the air in a little celebration.
"Not getting fired!"
Nova was finishing the last of her breakfast from the plastic bag. The van's door opened and Sheila appeared.
"Hey, come. New car," Sheila said.
Nova happily jumped out of the van and followed Sheila.
"No shitting in there okay?" Sheila said to Nova. "If you want poopie time, bark twice."
"Woof woof," said a voice in front of her.
A tall muscular man with combat gear approached Sheila and her dog. Four more men with guns waited on a black SUV behind him. Next to the SUV was the small truck Sheila was to drive.
"Hi, my name is Steve," he stretched his arm to greet Sheila. "We're your security."
Sheila shook it. Her sleeves were folded. She had a dragon tattoo covering her right arm. "Sheila. I work here. This is Nova."
Nova barked.
"Pleasure to meet you," Steve said. "Now my boss hired me to get you to Sky Labs safe, and yours, to get whatever is in that truck to Sky Labs. I want both our bosses to be happy so follow my car and don't do anything stupid."
"Aye aye captain,"Sheila saluted.
"Good," Steve turned and headed towards his team, "we're in business boys, let's rock and roll."
Sheila got into the truck and started it. He followed the black SUV out of the compound and into the street. The drive was peaceful and calm. But inside Sheila's head, questions buzzed.
"Whatever we're carrying must be very important," she said to Nova.
Nova stared at her and barked, even though Sheila understand nothing.
"Or very dangerous. If they have security, then someone is probably trying to get it," Sheila said. "Oh so that's why Craig chose me to do this job. I am expendable. He can afford to lose me. That asshole."
Nova barked. But this time, she barked at something outside. It was flying, and it was headed in their direction. And it wasn't slowing down.
Sheila saw it just in time to hit the breaks. The truck screeched to a stop, right before the object landed heavily in front of the truck with a deafening explosion. Her ears rang. The shockwave shattered the windshield into thousands of projectiles that showered Sheila and Nova.
Nova placed her down and covered her head with paws. She began whining. Then, her head shot up and she stared at the cloud of dust that was settling in front of them. She began growling then barking as a figure began appearing.
Someone knocked on Sheila's window. She turned. It was Steve.
"Go back! Find another way, we'll take care of this!" he shouted as his team cautiously moved towards the silhouette of the mysterious figure climbing out of the impact crater.
Sheila put the truck in reverse and slammed on the accelerator. The truck sped backwards, concluding with a U-turn. She then drove away, leaving Steve and his team to deal with whatever the heck that was.
"Okay, Sky Labs isn't far," Sheila said. She finally began breathing. She looked at the map on the dashboard display. "Let's try and get there alive."
Nova gave a bark of encouragement.
