Chapter 4

1225 Words
Fatty and his men gave Kaden unfriendly looks when they saw him, but they didn't provoke him. It was as if an invisible wall divided the cell. On one side was Kaden, and on the other were the seven of them. Neither side interacted with the other. Kaden knew they wouldn't let him off the hook. He had spent several days in the infirmary recovering from his injuries, and the guards had heightened their vigilance, paying extra attention to activity in the cells. Fatty wasn't stupid. He wouldn't risk making a move under the guards' watchful eyes. He was clearly biding his time, waiting for the right opportunity to retaliate. Since Kaden was injured, he was temporarily excused from working in the factory. During outdoor time, while the others jogged, Kaden would sit on the sidelines. Kaden speculated that Fatty might try something during mealtime. As he expected, on Thursday, milk was distributed with the meal. After drinking the milk, the cartons had to be flattened and returned for recycling on the spot. Kaden noticed that Fatty didn't hand in his milk carton, as if he was deliberately hiding it. In the prison, utensils were plastic, and slippers were made of soft rubber. There were very few items that could be used as weapons. Was Fatty planning to use the milk carton for something? As Kaden pondered this, the person behind him urged impatiently: "Hurry up!" Snapping out of his thoughts, Kaden looked at his tray. "Wait, where's my milk carton?" Holding his tray, he queued up to return the utensils to the collection area, but the folded milk carton that had been in the upper left corner of his tray was gone. Realizing the milk carton was missing, Kaden froze in place. The person behind him gave him a shove, causing him to stumble forward and crash into the person in front of him. The person in front was a burly man, seemingly the leader of another cellblock. He turned around with a cold glare. "What the h*ll are you doing?" Without another word, the burly man shoved Kaden. And just like that, the entire cafeteria erupted into chaos. The guards blew their whistles and rushed over to restore order, but the scene had already spiraled out of control. Kaden immediately realized that Fatty's move to hide the milk carton was just a distraction to grab his attention and set him up for an ambush. However, the unexpected commotion triggered the chaos ahead of schedule. Amid the pushing and shoving of the crowd, Kaden nervously scanned his surroundings. But with so many faces flashing past, it was impossible to keep track of anyone. Time seemed to slow down. Even though nothing had happened yet, he could feel danger closing in. In a split second, five words flashed through his mind, 'Take action first to survive!' With a plan forming in his head, Kaden began searching for Fatty. 'Got him!' He quickly locked onto Fatty, who was five people away, and pushed through the crowd to get to him. Fatty noticed and turned to dodge. The last time Kaden had punched him, it had been a sneak attack. Fatty wasn't a natural-born fighter, so he wasn't confident about a head-on confrontation. Fortunately, Kaden hadn't been idle during outdoor time. He had secretly picked up a sharp rock to use as a weapon, which now slid out of his sleeve and into his hand. With a leap, Kaden jumped onto a table and tackled Fatty to the ground. "Don't move!" The sharp rock pressed against the major artery in Fatty's neck, giving Kaden the upper hand. When Kaden glanced back, he broke out in a cold sweat. Two people had been closing in on where he had stood earlier, each holding a screwdriver. That was close! Kaden's sudden move disrupted Fatty's plan. Fatty cursed internally but quickly surrendered verbally. "Wait... Kaden, don't do anything rash!" "Boss!" The two who had failed to strike shouted in panic when they saw Fatty being subdued. The guards maintaining order turned toward the commotion, frowning as they realized it was Kaden again. The other prisoners, who had been making a racket, suddenly quieted down as they watched the scene unfold. They couldn't even remember who they had been shouting for earlier. Now, they were secretly thrilled to be spectators. This newcomer was something else. He'd barely been here for long and had already ended up in the infirmary, and now he was causing this much trouble during lunch. Impressive. Mason stood in the corner, his small eyes glinting with a faint light. He was curious to see how things would unfold next. "3403, what are you doing? Let go of 3201 immediately! Do you hear me?" "Do you want more time added to your sentence? You just got out of the infirmary. Don't cause trouble!" "Put the rock down! I'm ordering you to put it down! Three! Two..." Amid the shouts and commands, the guards had already raised their guns. Kaden felt the tension building, but he knew he had to stay calm. Leaning close to Fatty's ear, he whispered, "I'm an orphan. My girlfriend gave me a home, but she was murdered, and now I just want to die to be with her. If you're willing to die with me, I don't mind taking you along!" "Kaden, I'm sorry... I'm sorry! I won't go against you anymore! You're the boss! I'll surrender to you!" Fatty pleaded desperately. Fatty was half a head taller than Kaden, but at this moment, his legs were trembling, and he looked like a pile of fat about to collapse. Even with guns pointed at Kaden, he refused to back down. Fatty felt a sharp pain in his neck—he was bleeding! He realized this guy wasn't bluffing. He wanted to die! But Fatty didn't want to die. All his bullying was just to make life in prison a little easier. He only had one year left until his release. He was terrified that in this tense situation, Kaden might act on impulse and end his life. Fatty had no choice but to keep pleading and begging. Kaden pressed the rock harder against his neck and ordered, "Tell them all!" Fatty shouted, "I acknowledge you as the boss of our cell! You all better treat him as the boss too! Do you hear me?" His underlings widened their eyes in shock. One of the quicker-witted ones immediately chimed in, "Yes, boss—oh, no... Yes, Fatty! Kaden, you're our boss!" The others quickly nodded in agreement, shouting, "Boss!" The guard counted, "One!" Just as his finger tightened on the trigger, Kaden threw the rock away. The guards rushed forward and pinned Kaden face-down on the table. Kaden glanced toward the crowd and spotted Mason. Mason gave him a barely noticeable nod. Kaden's expression didn't change, but inside, he let out a sigh of relief. Rachel's case was still shrouded in mystery. He couldn't die yet. But at this moment, he finally felt truly alive. At last, he had a chance to get closer to the truth. *** In the solitary confinement cell, Mason knocked on the iron door from outside. "3403." Kaden looked up as Mason slid a newspaper through the slot. "There's an update on your girlfriend's case. Want to take a look?"
