EPISODE 1 — THE REJECTION
The moon hung over Silver Lake Pack like a pale silver eye.
Salina stood alone at the edge of the forest, watching its reflection tremble across the lake.
She had been standing there for almost an hour.
She should have been inside.
The pack was preparing for tomorrow’s Coming-of-Age Ceremony, and everyone was celebrating.
Everyone except her.
Salina pulled her jacket tighter around herself.
“Nervous?”
The voice came from inside her mind.
Salina smiled faintly.
“You know I am.”
Nyra gave a quiet huff.
You always get nervous before important things.
“Because important things usually go wrong.”
Tomorrow is only a ceremony.
Salina looked at the moon.
“It isn’t only a ceremony for me.”
Nyra went quiet.
Salina didn’t need to explain.
Tomorrow she would turn nineteen.
Tomorrow the pack would officially recognize her adulthood.
And tomorrow, once again, everyone would see what they already believed about her.
She was wolfless.
Weak.
A disappointment.
Salina had heard those words for years.
She had learned not to react.
But nobody knew the truth.
Nobody knew that a wolf lived inside her.
Nyra.
Her wolf had been with her for as long as she could remember.
She had never shifted in front of anyone.
She had never allowed Nyra’s presence to be detected.
Not even Lyra, her closest friend, knew.
Salina had kept Nyra hidden for one reason.
Survival.
A wolf was valuable in Silver Lake Pack.
A strong wolf meant respect.
A powerful wolf could mean rank.
But a hidden wolf meant freedom.
If the pack discovered Nyra, Salina didn’t know what would happen.
The elders might demand answers.
The Alpha might want to know why she had lied.
And Salina wasn’t ready to give anyone control over the one thing that belonged completely to her.
You are not weak, Nyra said.
Salina smiled.
“I know.”
Then stop letting them make you believe it.
“I don’t.”
Nyra was silent.
Salina looked down at her hands.
“Sometimes I just get tired.”
I know.
Salina closed her eyes.
“Let’s go home.”
She turned toward the pack.
Neither of them knew that everything was about to change.
⸻
The next evening, Silver Lake Pack was crowded around the ceremony grounds.
Wolves filled the clearing.
Warriors stood at the outer edges.
The elders sat beneath the large wooden canopy.
Young wolves stood together, waiting for their names to be called.
Salina stood near the back beside Lyra.
Lyra glanced at her.
“You’re quiet.”
“I always am.”
“Not like this.”
Salina gave her a small smile.
“You worry too much.”
“And you don’t worry enough.”
Salina laughed softly.
Lyra nudged her.
“If anyone says anything stupid tonight, ignore them.”
“I always do.”
“Good.”
A sudden silence spread through the crowd.
Lyra’s smile disappeared.
Salina looked toward the entrance.
Kael had arrived.
The Alpha of Silver Lake Pack walked into the clearing with Damon, his Beta, a few steps behind him.
Kael didn’t acknowledge the whispers.
He didn’t smile.
He didn’t greet anyone.
He simply walked forward.
Tall.
Controlled.
Cold.
His presence alone commanded silence.
Salina had seen him many times before.
But she had never been this close to him.
Then Kael stopped.
His eyes found hers.
Everything changed.
Salina’s breath caught.
Her heart slammed against her chest.
Nyra suddenly went silent.
Then—
Mate.
Salina froze.
“What?”
Nyra’s voice was barely a whisper.
He’s our mate.
Salina couldn’t move.
Across the clearing, Kael’s expression had changed.
Only slightly.
His eyes narrowed.
His jaw tightened.
His wolf had recognized her too.
But unlike Salina, Kael didn’t look happy.
He looked annoyed.
Cold.
Almost angry.
Their eyes remained locked for several seconds.
Then Kael looked away.
Salina’s stomach dropped.
She didn’t understand.
This was supposed to be the moment every wolf dreamed about.
Finding your mate.
Finding the person chosen for you.
So why did Kael look like he’d just been given a problem he didn’t want?
⸻
The ceremony continued.
One young wolf after another stepped forward.
Some shifted.
Some discovered abilities.
The pack cheered.
Then the Elder called Salina.
“Salina.”
She stepped forward.
The crowd became quieter.
The Elder looked at her.
“Have you felt your wolf?”
Salina lowered her gaze.
“No.”
Nyra remained perfectly silent.
“Have you shifted?”
“No.”
The Elder sighed.
“You remain wolfless.”
Whispers immediately spread through the crowd.
Salina heard them.
“She really doesn’t have a wolf.”
“She’s nineteen.”
“That’s embarrassing.”
“Who would ever choose her?”
Salina kept her face expressionless.
Lyra looked furious.
“Enough,” Lyra muttered to the people near her.
Salina gave her a small shake of her head.
Don’t.
She didn’t want a fight.
She had survived worse.
Then Salina felt someone watching her.
Kael.
She looked toward him.
His face was unreadable.
But she knew he had heard everything.
The ceremony ended shortly afterward.
Salina turned to leave.
“Salina.”
Kael’s voice stopped her.
Her body immediately reacted to him.
That invisible pull returned.
She turned.
“Yes, Alpha?”
“Come with me.”
It wasn’t a request.
Salina followed.
They walked into the forest.
Kael didn’t speak until they were far enough away that nobody could hear them.
Then he turned.
“You felt the bond.”
Salina nodded.
“Yes.”
“You’re my mate.”
“Yes.”
Kael stared at her.
“How long have you known?”
“Since I saw you.”
His expression hardened.
“You’re wolfless.”
Salina knew what was coming.
“Yes.”
“Then this changes nothing.”
She looked at him.
“Nothing?”
“You cannot be my Luna.”
His voice was flat.
Salina swallowed.
“You haven’t even given me a chance.”
“I don’t need one.”
The words were brutal.
“You don’t know me.”
“I know enough.”
“You know what the pack thinks.”
“I know what I see.”
Salina’s eyes hardened.
“And what do you see?”
“A wolfless woman.”
She went quiet.
Kael continued.
“My Luna will stand beside me. She will defend this pack. She will command respect.”
“I can do those things.”
“You don’t have a wolf.”
“I don’t need your permission to know what I’m capable of.”
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
“Don’t mistake confidence for strength.”
“And don’t mistake being wolfless for being helpless.”
For the first time, something shifted in Kael’s expression.
Not admiration.
Not warmth.
Irritation.
“Enough.”
Salina stopped speaking.
Kael looked at her coldly.
“I have no intention of accepting this bond.”
Salina’s heart sank.
She already knew.
Still, hearing it hurt.
“You’re rejecting me.”
“Yes.”
No hesitation.
No apology.
No explanation.
Just one cold answer.
Salina took a slow breath.
“Because I’m wolfless.”
“Yes.”
Kael’s eyes never left hers.
“I will not make a wolfless woman my Luna.”
Salina stared at him.
Inside her mind, Nyra was silent.
Listening.
Waiting.
Salina could feel her wolf’s anger.
But she kept her secret.
She wouldn’t reveal Nyra.
Not for him.
Not now.
Kael stepped closer.
His voice was emotionless.
“Do you accept the rejection?”
Salina’s chest tightened.
She knew she could refuse.
She knew she could beg.
She knew she could ask him to reconsider.
But she wouldn’t.
She lifted her chin.
“I accept.”
Kael’s expression didn’t change.
“Good.”
That single word hurt almost as much as everything else.
Salina looked at him.
“You really don’t care.”
Kael’s answer was immediate.
“This is not about caring.”
“Then what is it about?”
“My duty.”
He looked away.
“My pack comes first.”
Salina nodded slowly.
“Then reject me.”
Kael looked back at her.
“I will.”
He stood straight.
His voice became formal.
Cold.
“I, Kael, Alpha of Silver Lake Pack, reject you, Salina, as my mate.”
The bond shattered.
Salina screamed.
Her knees gave way.
She crashed onto the ground, one hand clutching her chest.
Pain ripped through her body.
It wasn’t normal heartbreak.
It was as if something invisible had wrapped itself around her soul and violently torn it apart.
Her heart pounded once.
Twice.
Then seemed to stop.
She couldn’t breathe.
“Ah—”
She gasped desperately.
Her vision blurred.
Tears ran down her face.
Her fingers dug into the dirt.
Inside her mind, Nyra screamed.
SALINA!
“I know…”
It hurts.
“I know.”
He broke our bond.
Salina could barely breathe.
Her entire body trembled.
The pain spread from her chest through her ribs, shoulders, and stomach.
She felt sick.
Cold sweat covered her forehead.
She tried to stand.
Her legs collapsed again.
Kael remained where he was.
Cold.
Still.
He didn’t reach for her.
He didn’t comfort her.
But his own breathing had changed.
His hand slowly closed over his chest.
His wolf was in agony.
Go to her.
Kael ignored him.
She’s hurting.
Kael’s jaw tightened.
He knew.
He felt every piece of the bond tearing apart.
His chest burned.
His heartbeat felt wrong.
His wolf was howling inside him.
But Kael refused to move.
He had made his decision.
He would not allow instinct to control him.
Salina looked up at him through her tears.
For one brief second, she saw the pain in his eyes.
Then it disappeared.
The cold mask returned.
She understood.
He wasn’t going to help her.
And she didn’t want him to.
Slowly, Salina pushed herself up.
Her arms shook.
Her breathing was uneven.
But she stood.
Kael watched without moving.
Salina wiped the tears from her cheeks.
Then she looked directly into his eyes.
“I accept your rejection, Alpha.”
Kael said nothing.
She continued.
“I won’t beg you to change your mind.”
Nothing.
“You made your choice.”
Her voice cracked slightly.
“But I accept it.”
Kael gave one cold nod.
“Good.”
Salina’s heart hurt again.
Not because of the bond.
Because of him.
She turned away.
“Then we’re done.”
Kael’s voice came from behind her.
“Yes.”
Salina stopped.
For a second, she wanted to look back.
She didn’t.
She walked away.
One step.
Then another.
Every movement hurt.
Nyra spoke quietly inside her.
You don’t have to pretend you’re fine.
Salina swallowed.
“I’m not fine.”
Then cry.
Salina wiped another tear away.
“Later.”
She kept walking.
Behind her, Kael remained in the forest.
His wolf continued to fight him.
You rejected our mate.
Kael’s expression stayed cold.
“She was wolfless.”
She is ours.
“She cannot be my Luna.”
You will regret this.
Kael’s eyes hardened.
“I won’t.”
But deep inside, his wolf refused to believe him.
⸻
Salina reached the edge of the pack grounds.
Lyra saw her first.
“Salina?”
Salina stopped.
Lyra immediately noticed her red eyes.
“What happened?”
Salina forced herself to breathe.
“Nothing.”
“Don’t lie to me.”
Salina looked at her best friend.
Then she gave her a small, tired smile.
“I’m just exhausted.”
Lyra didn’t believe her.
But before she could ask another question, Salina walked past her.
She couldn’t explain.
Not yet.
She couldn’t tell anyone that the Alpha had been her mate.
She couldn’t tell anyone that he had rejected her.
And she definitely couldn’t tell anyone about Nyra.
That secret would remain buried.
Salina entered her room and locked the door.
Only then did her strength disappear.
She slid down against the door and covered her face.
Nyra stayed close.
I’m here.
Salina closed her eyes.
“I know.”
He doesn’t deserve to know about me.
“No.”
She wiped her tears.
“He doesn’t.”
What happens now?
Salina looked toward the window.
Outside, Silver Lake shimmered beneath the moon.
“He rejected me.”
Her voice was quiet.
“So I accept it.”
And him?
Salina’s expression hardened.
“He’s my Alpha.”
She took a shaky breath.
“But he is no longer my future.”
Nyra went silent.
Salina lay down, still feeling the painful emptiness where the mate bond had been.
She knew the wound would take time to heal.
She knew tomorrow the entire pack might learn about the rejection.
She knew Kael would eventually choose someone else.
She just didn’t know how soon.
And she didn’t know that the woman Kael would eventually choose would be Mira.
A woman who had already begun watching Salina with quiet resentment.
A woman who wanted Kael.
A woman who would eventually become his chosen mate.
His wife.
His Luna.
But for tonight, Salina knew only one thing.
She had lost her mate.
And she had accepted his choice.
What Kael didn’t know was that the girl he had rejected as wolfless was carrying a secret that could change the entire Silver Lake Pack.
Her wolf was still there.
Nyra was still alive.
And she was still hidden.
For now.
