Patterns

Ezra's pov I helped get my parents settled into the most luxurious suit in the pack house hotel and my sisters got one similar to mine before kicking Alpha Derrick out of his office to brief my parents on the mission. My team had already been waiting for us and I was pleasantly surprised to find multiple fruit platters, sandwiches and an assortment of drinks beautifully set on one side of the office with flower arrangements and all. Something you'd expect from a hotel. “They certainly didn't do that for us” I said, shaking my head, not at all surprised that they'd go above and beyond to impress my parents. “It's not like you'd appreciate it” mom rolled her eyes, taking a seat on the couch that wasn't there two weeks ago when we arrived, or a few days ago when we were going through the pack’s new training regimen. “I would have” Lexie said, the only one of my friends who spoke freely with my parents. “The drinks you mean” mom chuckled, refering to the alcoholic beverages and how elves never turned down a party. “You know me too well” Lexie laughed as well while the others sat stiffly. “Alright, let's get down to business” dad said, gesturing for mom to take the seat next to him behind the desk. “So, how's the mission going?” Mom asked, looking quite serious for a woman who was laughing not even a minute ago. “This one is tricky, the attacks are random, unlike most which showed a pattern of aggression after a few attacks” I said, watching my parent's faces darken. “And the town is the main focus of their attacks, and they're not as violent. Sure there's always a few casualties but I'm sure if everyone adhered to the curfew, they'd be fine” I said, watching worry lines wrinkle their still young looking faces. “It's as if they're looking for something” Lexie said, looking like a light bulb just went off in her head, connecting the invible dots to the puzzle that's been keeping me up at night. “That's not all that's been up” my Lycan said, laying his giant head on his paws, eyes closed. Pushing down the sudden rush of feelings that came with the image of Jazmine's gorgeous form writhing beneath me, I cleared my throat to try and minimise the affect she had on me. Yes, I was having s*x dreams about her and they never failed to leave me hot and wanting… needy. “What do you mean looking for something?” Dad asked, looking more concern than I'd ever seen him before. “The way they move, it's stealthy, coordinated. If it wasn't for those unfortunate souls that just happened to be in their path, we wouldn't even know they were there” Lexie continued, making me realise how right she was. The only time we were alerted to their presence was if we heard someone scream for help while patrolling the town. I guess we have to thank their insatiable blood lust for that. “Looks like there is a pattern, just not one we're used to” Mom said, looking stressed and a little older with her face wrinkled in worry. “What could they possibly be looking for? Aren't they supposed to be mindless beasts?” Max asked, looking to everyone in the room for answers no one had. “Not if something is pulling the strings” mom said, her voice lower. “Helena could make them do whatever she wanted, they moved at her command. There has to be someone controlling them, using them” mom's voice lowered to a growl, her hands fisting in anger. “So there's a new witch in town? Awesome” Lexie sighed, her words leaving the room in dead silence. “We need to figure out who's behind all of this and stop them before they find whatever it is that they're looking for” dad said, his hand possessively around mom's chair, ready to destroy anyone who posed a threat to his Luna. “Our Luna also needs protecting, the town is outside the barrier and sometimes she knocks off late” My Lycan said, causing a knot to form in my stomach at the thought of something happening to her. “Has anyone wondered why they're looking for something in this specific town?” Brody asked, making me c**k my head to the side as I looked at him. It was quiet for a few moments as everyone stewed on his words. I hadn't even once wondered why they were targeting this town. I've kept tabs on all neighbouring towns and beyond that and nothing has come up. Whatever it was they were looking for, was here, and we had to find out what it was about this town that had creatures of such bloodlust secretly and silently scouring the town instead of laying it to waste. “I'll get information on the town from Alpha Derrick, maybe there's something we don't know” dad said, his jaw clenching. “I don't think we'll get much out of him” dad linked me, making me wonder what it was that he wanted to keep from everyone else. “No, we need to look for answers ourselves” I linked back, keeping my face blank as the conversation in the room continued. “I know you don't particularly like working with Miranda, but we need her” he said, making me groan, which coincided with a statement my mom made and didn't sound out of place. “Dad…” I began complaining but he cut me off. “You need eyes and ears in rooms and conversations you're not invited to” he said, making way too much sense. Fuck, he was right, I needed that little rat! “Fine, she can come” I said, not too happy about having to rely on one of the most mischievous creatures alive. “Oh she's already here” he said with a chuckle, a smile forming on his lips as I turned to look at him. “What?!” I linked, furious. “She was constantly crying about missing you and we thought bringing her for your shift would lift her spirit” he said, humour dripping off of every word. “You know she was faking it right?” I asked, not able to stop my eyebrows from lifting. “Oh I know, but your mom has a soft spot for those little monsters and I can't say no to her” he said, making me sigh. “I guess all we can do for now is keep watching them and making sure they don't find whatever it is they're looking for” mom said, massaging her temples. “Yes Luna” my friends said, bringing the meeting to a close. “Now then, how about we go eat? Luna Louisa said something about a diner that serves the best food in town. Get your sisters so we can go have lunch” mom said, causing everyone to turn to me while my heart hammered violently against my chest. “But there's food right here” I said with a nervous smile, feeling my throat suddenly go dry. She gave me a pointed look and I knew she was screwed, royally screwed. I couldn't let her find out about my situation with Jazmine, she'd kill me. Heck, I want to kill me. I messed up bad. “Mother knows we found our mate but not more than that” my Lycan said, causing a bit of relief to wash over me, even though I knew I wasn't out of the woods. “Well? Go get your sisters” she said getting up and walking around the table. “You're not hiding her from me” she said, walking out the door.
