Ezra's pov
“I thought I told you to watch over the pack training” I said, annoyed he'd followed me yet again. He'd been doing that a lot lately.
“I let Matt and Dom beat them up a little” he said, not moving from where he stood a few feet behind me.
“You do know you could just, I don't know, talk to her, instead of spying and stalking her right? It's creepy bro” he said, making me grit my teeth.
“Mind your business!” I growled, low yet powerful, my Lycan already pushing forward.
It had gotten a lot harder to contain him, getting stronger every day with the full moon and shift approaching.
And maybe because of her.
Definitely because of her.
She called to my Lycan in ways I'd never felt before, not even with Rowena.
And now, with the shift only a few hours away, I could barely hold myself together.
Standing here and watching her was getting harder by the second.
Everything was intensified. My hearing sharper, sight more vivid, instincts heightened.
My love for her, the need to hold her, kiss her, mark her mine forever. Everything hitting me all at the same time, stronger than I'd ever felt the urges before.
I craved her, like an addict anticipating their next hit.
It was as if I was on steroids.
“Get used to it, this is what it will be like everyday from now on” My Lycan said, his voice so loud and rough, I felt a headache form.
“Everyday, you do this everyday. Stand here and watch her go about her day. You watch her at home, there's not a second you don't have eyes on her. You yearn for her” He said, causing an unsettling feeling to take root in the pit of my stomach, my heart thumping loudly.
He told no lies, everything in me ached for her. My blood boiling constantly, begging for her.
But I couldn't, how could I? It's been so long. I hesitated for far too long, and now, I don't know if she'll even want to be mine.
And the thought of her rejecting me made me ache in ways worse than losing Rowena.
“She won't reject us you i***t! Doing nothing is only making it worse!” My Lycan growled yet again, causing my head to pound.
“Lexi was right, you're stupid” Max laughed, even though there was no humour in it.
“Watch it!” I gave him a quick side glance before returning my gaze to the diner, where she'd been on her feet for the last four hours working none stop as people came and went.
“Watch what? You fumble the best thing that's ever happened to you?” He asked, the question hanging in the silence unanswered.
“I wish it was me” he said, the comment rubbing me the wrong way.
What the hell did he mean by that?!
Did he wish she was his instead of mine?! Did he want her?!
She was mine! Mine, and mine alone! No one was allowed to even look at her!!!
“You wish my mate was yours!” My growl was low, dangerous, threatening; turning my head to watch him from the corner of my eye.
My Lycan on the surface, ready to lay waste to the man who thought he was better suited for my mate.
Friend or not, no one was allowed to look at her that way!
“Rip my head off if you want, but that's not what I meant. All I'm saying is, I wish it was me that had found their mate” he said calmly, sadness in his eyes.
“I wouldn't waste a second, she'd be in my arms from day one” he said, his eyes telling of the deep yearning for his other half.
My Lycan retreated, leaving me to remember how miserable my best friend had been about not finding his mate.
I'm such an asshole.
“Max I…” I started but he cut me off.
“Not everyone gets a second chance, some of us might not even get a first. Don't let her slip through your fingers. Stop using Rowena’s death as an excuse to hide your fear of losing her” he said, his words cutting deep.
He turned to leave, stopping after a few steps. “Get your head out of your ass before you lose her. Two weeks is a long time to be ignored by someone that's supposed to be your soulmate. Fix this before you lose her Ezra” with that, he walked off, leaving me to fight everything in me that wanted to burst through those doors and pull her into my arms.
“Why not?” My Lycan questioned, making me fist my hands.
“It's not that simple!” I sighed, irritated with him.
“Yes it is!” He growled, making me wince at the sharpness of it.
“Ezra?” A soft, very familiar voice that I didn't think I'd be hearing anytime soon called; instantly easing every worry within me.
Promising to fix everything I was destroying.
“Mom?” I linked back, wondering if maybe I was losing it.
“Mother” my Lycan said, suddenly happy and at ease, and… was he wagging his tail?
“My pup” a more majestic voice responded, confirming that it truly was my mom.
“Surprise!” She said with a giggle and I couldn't help the laugh that bubbled out of me, of course she'd be here for my first shift.
“I can't believe this, you came?” I laughed, overjoyed.
“Of course we came, you're our boy afterall” that was dad, making my Lycan jump for joy.
“We just crossed the pack border, meet us there would you? I can sense you're not on pack grounds” she said, making me cast the diner one last look before I turned to leave, a part of me resisting.
“She's going to kill me when she finds out about Jazmine, isn't she?” I asked my Lycan, who smiled wickedly.
“Yes, yes she will and I'll tell her I'm innocent” the traitor said smugly.
“f**k” I cursed as I made my way through the forest and into pack land, dread slowly seeping into my bones.
I needed to make sure they didn't find out about Jazmine until I fix things with her, Goddess knows I'll never hear the end of it.
“Mother already knows, she knew before we did” he said, still smug as ever.
I stopped, more like froze on the spot.
“What the hell do you mean by that?!” I panicked, already imagining the hell I was walking into.
“Don't you remember what she said the day we left home?” He asked, reminding me of what she'd said.
“s**t! But how? How could she possibly know I was going to meet Jazmine?” I asked, needing answers.
She couldn't have known I'd meet my second mate, it wasn't possible, that's something only the Goddess would know!
“I see you don't pay mother much attention” he rolled his eyes, urging me to keep going.
“Remember the story of when mother put up the barrier?” He asked and I just nodded.
“Well, mother was already with us when she crossed over to the Goddess realm and us surviving that would have been impossible had it not been for the Goddess imbuing her power within our mother to keep us alive” he said, leaving me at a loss for words.
“She may not be on the same level as the Moon Goddess, but being a royal hybrid with Goddess magic within her, she is basically a walking Goddess and one of the perks of having such power is foreshadowing” he said with an easy sigh while I struggled to grasp what he'd just said.
I couldn't believe my mother was that powerful, and I couldn't believe how royally f****d I was.
I broke through the treeline leading to the pack house to see every single pack member standing in a guard of honour.
I couldn't really see that well beyond the convoy but I sure as hell could see my father talking to the Alpha.
Steeling my insides and preparing myself for a grueling interrogation, I began my walk between the aisle to my parents.
“Ezra!” A very familiar squeaky voice screamed before I saw her speeding my way.
“Eleanor!” I called out to my baby sister, pleasantly surprised to see her.
She jumped into my open arms like she loved doing and I caught her, her giggles easing some of my worries.
Maybe mom wouldn't give me a talking to if I kept her close.
“Why didn't you tell me you were coming?” I asked setting her down.
“It wouldn't be much of a surprise now would it?” Lin said, leaning against the car closest to us with a soft smile playing on her lips.
“Hey big brother” she said, coming in for a hug.
“I missed you guys so much” I said after breaking the hug.
“We missed you too, you've never been on a mission for this long!” Eleanor whined, making me laugh.
“I know, things are a little complicated this time” I said, scratching the back of my head.
“Jazmine is not a complication!” My Lycan growled, making both my sisters gasp.
“Was that your Lycan? Your eyes changed colour for a second there” Lin said looking excited.
“Yeah, he's happy to see you guys” I lied, using everything in me to push him down, couldn't have him exposing me to everyone.
“Make way, make way, let me see my son” mother said as she approached me, making me break out in a nervous smile.
“Mom” I said, hugging her tightly.
“How are you love?” She asked, her smile as knowing and gentle as ever.
“I'm alright” I said with a sigh, happy and terrified. She looked behind me and frowned, but said nothing, very possibly looking for the daughter in law she knew I'd already met.
“Good, come now, there's much to discuss” she said, making me gulp.
“Also, what's up with the hotel pack house?” Lin whispered from behind me, making me chuckle, my sister was so much like Lexie, no wonder they got along so well.
