One Fatal Mistake
“What a freak!” “That lowlife wolfless omega is at it again! She’s just crazy!” “What the hell does she think she’s doing?” “She’s lost her damn mind!” Everyone’s eyes were fixed on me, some laughing while others pointed and stared as though I were some kind of spectacle. Why am I on fire? The question repeated itself in my head as I scratched desperately at my arms and neck. My entire body felt unbearably hot, as though flames were spreading beneath my skin. My head spun, making it difficult to keep my balance, while a strange weakness settled over my limbs. I could barely think. Without caring about the people watching, I yanked off my shirt and tossed it onto the floor, leaving me in only my bra. Normally, the realization that an entire crowd was staring at me would have filled me with embarrassment, but right now, I couldn’t bring myself to care. My skin felt like it was burning from the inside out and I desperately needed something to cool me down. The floor seemed to tilt beneath my feet, and I instinctively reached out for something to steady myself, but my fingers closed around nothing but air. As I struggled to remain standing, Tessa closed the distance between us. She placed a hand on my shoulder and locked her gaze with mine. A faint smile touched her lips, though there was something strangely unreadable about it. “Alina, are you feeling okay?” she asked. I stared at Tessa through my hazy vision, wondering why she seemed almost amused by my condition. Still, I pushed the thought aside and shook my head, scratching desperately at my burning neck. “I… I don’t feel good, Tessa. Please, I need… I need help.” My voice trembled as I pleaded, tugging my fingers deep into my hair as though I wanted to pull it straight from my scalp. Tessa sighed before nodding. “Come on. Let me get you somewhere quiet,” she said quickly. She leaned closer and with a swift motion, wrap her arm around my waist and helped me toward the hallway. I barely noticed the people staring at me or the laughter following us. My head was spinning too badly, and all I could think about was finding somewhere cool. Tessa led me down the hallway until we stopped in front of a door. She stopped and let out a quiet sigh before turning to me. “Go inside and wait for me, okay? I’ll get you some water. You’ll feel better in a minute,” she said quickly, her voice carrying a note of urgency as her eyes darting toward the door before returning to me. “Tessa… please stay with me…” I stammered, my words trailing off as I reached for her hand. But before I could hold onto her, I stumbled forward, nearly losing my balance because of the dizziness. “Tessa… what’s happening to me?” I whispered, my voice trembling as I stared at the closed door. My thoughts immediately drifted to Orion. My wedding was only a month away. What would happen to my marriage if anyone found me like this? My father had sacrificed his life saving Alpha Cyrus and his infant son, Orion. In return, Cyrus had sworn that I would one day become Orion’s Luna. It was his way of honoring the life-debt he owed my father and ensuring that his sacrifice would never be forgotten. That promise had followed me my entire life. Tessa sighed. “Alina, just wait here for me, okay? I promise I won’t be long.” I wanted to protest, but my mind felt too foggy to form the words. My thoughts were slipping further away from me with every passing second. Tessa helped me push the door open before guiding me inside. The moment I crossed the threshold, she released me. Then she gave me one last look, her expression unreadable for a brief moment. Before I could make sense of it, she pushed me farther into the room and shut the door behind me. The click of the lock sounded unusually loud in the silence that followed. The room was completely dark. Not even a sliver of light reached me. I stretched one hand toward the wall, hoping to find a switch, but my fingers only brushed against empty space. My coordination was failing me. After several unsuccessful attempts, I gave up and remained near the door, trying to steady myself. “Where are you guys? I paid you and your team last week, so why aren’t you here now?” Tessa’s voice suddenly reached me. From the sound of her voice, I realized she was on the phone. I reached behind myself and undid my bra, the unbearable heat still crawling beneath my skin. I turned toward the door, intending to open it and ask Tessa for help, when her next words stopped me cold. “I don’t care about your excuses. Just get here. She’s already inside, and I need those pictures before anyone realizes what’s happening.” My heart lurched. What pictures? “Hey! Alina can barely stand. She won’t be able to fight back, so get here before the drug starts wearing off.” For a moment, I couldn’t comprehend what I had just heard. Then I gasped. My body staggered backward, and I reached blindly for the wall to keep myself upright. The heat still raged through me, but a different kind of cold had settled in my chest. Tessa… That was Tessa’s voice. The same Tessa I had trusted for fifteen years. She had drugged me. She had planned all of this from the beginning. My eyes remained fixed on the door as the truth slowly sank in. I wanted to throw the door open and confront her, but the moment I tried to move, another wave of dizziness swept through my head. Tessa had been my childhood friend for fifteen years. She was the person I trusted most. Just hours ago, I had complained to her about my mother’s hospital bills. She had been suffering from kidney failure and had been hospitalized for months, and the cost of her treatment was becoming more than I could handle. That was when Tessa suggested I come to the club and work as a server for just one night. She assured me the pay wasn’t bad and told me it would at least give me some money to put toward my mother’s treatment. How foolish of me to believe every word that came out of her mouth. She had made it sound harmless. Just one night of work. A little extra money before my marriage to Orion, the Alpha’s son, which was supposed to take place next month. Now, everything was beginning to make sense. Tessa hadn’t brought me here to earn money. She had brought me here to ruin my future with Orion and that realization made my stomach churn. A sob caught in my throat. If Orion happened to see me like this, there would be no way to explain what had happened. He wouldn’t believe that I had been drugged. He would only see the evidence Tessa had arranged, and everything my father had sacrificed his life for would be destroyed. But why? What had I ever done to make the person I trusted most want to destroy me? Still standing by the door, I listened as Tessa angrily walked away. When her footsteps finally faded, I opened the door and stepped into the hallway. I immediately started making my way toward the exit, scratching desperately at my burning skin. The sensation had spread everywhere, even to my most private parts, and I could barely think straight. But as I staggered forward, a thought suddenly crossed my mind. If I headed toward the exit, there was a high chance that the crowd from the club would still be gathered there. I couldn’t let them see me like this. I turned around instead and staggered deeper into the hallway, searching for somewhere I could hide. The first unlocked door I found, I pushed open. Without hesitation, I searched the wall for a light switch. When I found it, I flicked it on and scanned the room. It appeared to be a vip room. “Water…” I mumbled as my legs weakened beneath me. “I need water.” The burning inside me was becoming unbearable. I needed something, anything, to make it stop. I spotted another door and hurried toward it, hoping it led to a bathroom. The moment I pushed open the bathroom door, I froze. A man stood inside. For a brief second, I wanted to turn around, but my knees gave way beneath me. My vision was too blurred to make out his face. I blinked repeatedly, desperately trying to force my eyes to focus, but his features remained a dark blur. I didn’t know who he was, and I didn’t even know whose room I had entered. But one thing was certain… I needed to quench the burning sensation consuming my body. “Please… help me.”
