Chapter Eight CASS The wind howled around us, battering the open carriage as it bumped and trundled along over the barren fields. I pressed my face lower into the collar of my coat, trying not to shiver. Seemingly unbothered by the cold, Damon rode up ahead on horseback. He made an indistinct, lone figure against the horizon. Only the bare skeletal trees marked the landscape. It was a far cry from the lush orchards and grassy meadows I was used to. When I confessed that I’d never ridden before, Damon had looked surprised, but he didn’t pass comment on my lack of skill. I guessed it was just another weakness in his eyes, fitting in with his image of the pampered princess flitting around her tower in satin slippers. Which, in many ways, was actually the truth.
