AWR Chapter 34: Leave me hanging

2073 Words
“C’mon! Look at you! You seemed guilty about my joke! Duh! You’re too much!” She said while laughing at her. She poked Sheira’s arm out of frustration. That was really close. After hearing her question to her, she thought they already got busted. For her, that would be the most embarrassing thing to discuss. She’s thankful somehow. She knew Sheira is like a broken jukebox. Whenever she will know a certain topic, it goes on until the third week of the month. She will never stop talking about it if there’s a chance. That was really close! I was really close to embarrassment! “You know what? I really want to believe for a second that you two really make out somewhere…” She never lets her finish what she’s talking about. Instead, Rebecca covered Sheira’s mouth and pulled her out of the girl’s toilet. “Do you want to go home? If yes, then behave.” Sheira pouted her lips and formed it into a smile. She sighed as she shook her head. “Yes, madam. I will.” She said while giggling. Sheira told her to eat because she already reserved a plate full of food. She let her best friend sit next to her as they watch some entertainment brought by the debutant’s best friends. Rebecca saw Sheira laughed and she seemed to be focused on what she’s watching in front, while her? She’s very uneasy. She wanted to know where Gavin is and what he’s doing at the moment. Then an idea struck her. She almost forgot her phone inside her bag! She looked at Sheira again and when she knew that Sheira was not looking at her, she slowly pulled her cell phone from her handbag. Her hands were almost shaking as she unlocked her phone. Confirmed. There were a lot of text messages coming from Gavin. “Sorry, Becca..” “I miss you.” It made her freeze. She was stunned when a new message popped on her phone. “You’re the most beautiful woman in my eyes tonight.” Upon reading that, she slowly turned around and checked if Gavin was within their vicinity. She made sure that Sheira won’t notice that one too. She saw Gavin winked at her at the third chair from behind them. She frowned as she turned to her phone and started typing a long message while gritting her teeth. “Becca? Are you okay? Who’s that?” Before Sheira could see her messages intended for Gavin, she accidentally deleted it all before Sheira could even read any single word. When her best friend grabbed her phone from her, she raised her eyebrows. “Are you watching youtube while we’re also watching another show here? Are you really okay, Becca?” She chuckled when she realized that her panic resulted in clicking a random app on her phone even before Sheira grabbed her phone away from her. “I easily got bored. Besides, the whole show is for the debutant, not for me.” Sheira looked at her and nodded slowly. It looked like Sheira finally got her point. “Well at least you watched. It was really entertaining for me.” For you, not for me. It was just a plain dance. They haven’t even practiced that well.” Rebecca said in a lower voice for her not to be heard. She’s concerned that someone related to those who had their intermission numbers will hear her comments. “So what are we going to do now?” “I wanna go home. Wanna come to my house instead?” “If you will tell mom that I will be staying with you then that would be awesome.” Sheira said in an excited tone. “Gosh, I know what you’re thinking. So, what’s in it for me?” “I will treat you with mom’s best.” “Deal.” Rebecca gave Sheira a fist bump. Gavin was just chuckling in one corner looking at the two best friends. He noticed that it was Rebecca’s segway for Sheira not to ask more about what she’s thinking. He knew that Rebecca’s best friend will really have her way between the two of them if she will know that they are starting a conversation again. Sheira and Rebecca decided to go home ten minutes before the party officially came to an end. They bid farewell to Marvin and some of their colleagues. As they entered the car, Sheira noticed the unusual silence of Rebecca. “Are you alright?” She asked in a worried voice. Rebecca smiled at her and nodded. She started the engine as she turned her back. As she’s holding the steering wheel, she successfully drove the car outside the gate. “You know what? Something is really bothering you…” Sheira twisted her lips while sucking on a box of chocolate drink. “Yeah...you’re not being drunk tonight truly bothered me.” “You’re crazy, you know.” “I’m serious, though.” Rebecca answered with a chuckle. She’s the one driving her car while Sheira is just sitting on the passenger’s seat observing her intently, especially her blank facial expression. Meanwhile, Rebecca was just focusing her eyes on the road. “Well, for a change. I decided not to drink. I want to impress Marvin.” “What?!” “What in the world is shocking about what I said?” “Hmmm...that’s just sounding strange. Isn’t it supposed for you to show your true colors to him and see if he will really stay upon knowing what your real attitude is?” “You know what? You’re one, terrible best friend. I don’t know what to say.” Rebecca just chuckled in response. Then she preferred being silent. Talking with Sheira seemed to be getting pointless. All she is thinking right now is about what happened hours ago. Gavin’s lips brushing against hers gave her goosebumps. She could still feel the sensation that he allowed her to feel that she can’t help but to close her eyes and smile. “Rebecca!” Sheira shrieked that immediately brought her back to her senses. With that, she pressed the car brake all of a sudden. Good thing was, they were both wearing a seatbelt. “What are you doing!” She yelled at her that she swallowed hard. “Are you wishing for both of us to be dead? What are you daydreaming about?” She could feel that Sheira is angry now. Their car halted in an instant that it created a thick smoke as a result. “S-Sorry.” “What are you even thinking about, Becca? Have a presence of mind, will you? Focus on the road.” She said nothing and started the engine again. This time, she tried her best to drive as carefully as possible. When they reached home, Sheira was the one to enter and she went directly to the bathroom for a quick hot bath. Rebecca reclined at the sofa continuing what she’s thinking a while ago while she was driving. Was she even nuts? She realized that not being careful may lead to accidents. She felt sorry for Sheira for not focusing on the road. Instead, she was able to daydream about what happened when Gavin kissed her passionately. As far as she could remember, that was her first kiss and the longest one. She reclined on her seat as she touched her lips. She can’t help but to smile without realizing that Sheira is already standing in front of her with both of her hands on her hips. “I don’t know but I am starting to become scared.” Rebecca twitched all of a sudden as she opened her eyes. She was so shocked that Sheira appeared in front of her without any sound at all. “Are you a ghost or something?” “O c’mon girl. Don’t change the topic. I guess you’re the happiest tonight, am I right?” “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Rebecca slowly got up. She almost stuttered as Sheira asked her about these things. She even avoided her best friend’s eyes. “I know you too well. I know if you’re lying or not.” “You know I can’t, right?” “If you can’t, tell me what really happened…” “Why do you insist on things when there’s really nothing to tell about?” Rebecca started to feel annoyed about Sheira and on how she insisted on things. “You’re touching your lips.” She said while frowning. Rebecca couldn’t help but to bite her lower lip secretly. She took a deep breath and tried looking into her best friend’s eyes once again. “There’s no malice. My lips were just chapped and dry, that’s all.” “And you need someone to kiss it, am I right?” She giggled. Rebecca doesn’t know what to do with her best friend anymore. “You know what? I don’t know. I don’t know what to do with you anymore.” She walked out and headed towards the bathroom for a quick hot bath, too. She could hear her best friend giggle as she teased her more with her humming tone. “Get lost!” She laughed back, pushing her best friend while her bath towel was wrapping on her body. There’s also a tiny clothing that’s swirling around her damp hair to let dry. As she shut the door in front of her and turned on the shower, sudden beautiful thoughts came rushing within her as well. As she closed her eyes and felt the water on her head, she reminisced about that certain memory that she had with Gavin hours ago. “Gosh I can’t stop thinking about it! Am I really out of my mind?” She muttered to herself as she hugged her arms. She let the tap water flow rushing fast in the bathtub. She felt her lips trembling against the water current from the shower. She knew deep within her that she needed to forsake whatever ‘thing’ that might develop between her and Gavin. However, no matter how he avoids thinking about him, it’s her heart that’s insisting on everything. From her heart to her mind that remembers everything, even the smallest details. She could remember how her eyes twinkled when he caught her stealing a glimpse on him. From the table where they were sitting with Sheira, her gaze was all on her and there’s nothing she could do about it. She wanted to throw something from him to wake him up from the truth: That they could never be possible...the both of them. But the look of their eyes speaks differently. They were like two people who were madly in love with each other. “I miss you…” She could still recall the text message Gavin sent her. For others, it was only a simple text message but it already gave her goosebumps. It’s as if she could feel every word he intended to let her feel. “Hey! Are you really going to live inside your bathroom for real?” Sheira’s voice made her thoughts come back to reality again. She can’t help but to scratch her head because of Sheira. “I never knew there’s a time limit even for the time I will take a bath.” She yelled back and she heard her best friend giggle as her steps are getting away. She took a deep breath and took her quick bath right away. As she puts on her clothes, Sheira is facing her again with a frown. “What now?” “There’s nothing to explain my dear, okay? We need to rest. Tomorrow needs us.” She smiled as she combed her hair. Sheira is still frowning while she folded her arms. “I can really feel it. I always trust my intuitions, you know.” She said in a raised eyebrow. “Intuitions are assumptions sometimes.” Rebecca was quick to correct her best friend. She saw Sheira make a face while disagreeing to what she’s been telling her. Sometimes she wanted to believe that Sheira is a dog, while for dogs, it’s the sense of smell, Sheira is the best when it comes to giving the benefit of the doubt.
