Running errand
On a wintery morning in the woods, Aditi was going to buy some groceries. Her mother had planned to make pancakes for breakfast today but forgot to buy maple syrup, so she had to go and get it.
You might consider her stupid and dumb to go through the woods instead of taking the road so early in the morning with fog covering the woods and her not able to see more than 3 steps ahead but...., Well actually no buts she was spontaneous and reckless, two traits her mother have been begging to change since childhood.
Fortunately she knew the forest like the back of her hand. She's been born and raised here for 20 years now, she grew up while playing hide and seek with her friends in these very woods. One could blindfold her and she would still be able to find her way in here, so not being able to see wasn't really something to be worried about. Plus she could cover a 20 minute one side walk in 10 minutes including going back home so it was a deal.
If there was something to worry about, it was the uncomfortable eerie silence, no birds flying high in the usually blue, now grey sky, not that she was able to see so high in the sky with the fog, no squirrel in her vision, no usual barking of her neighbor's now wild dog Tannie, who now permanently stays in the woods, just silence and a bad guy feeling, but would she listen to her gut feeling and take the road? Nah, she was hungry, and hunger won over any second thoughts she was having.
Maybe it was just her imagination but she heard a weird sound coming when she walked, ignoring everything Aditi continued to walk till blood came into her vision. Blood on the trees, slowly she looks at the ground and slams her hand to her to stop the scream coming out loud in this silence.
Carcasses of birds and squirrels making a path ahead of her, Aditi closes her eyes and takes a deep breath then it hits her, the awful and disgusting smell of blood mixed with the air making her barf. She takes some steps back while keeping her eyes on the carcasses, slowly turning her back to them and sprints back to her house.
Aditi runs with all her strength until she slips on something and falls straight to the ground. Hissing, eyes closed, she rubs her left hand on her forehead only to feel warm liquid. She opens her eyes, only to see blood on her hand.
She looks down to see she's lying in a pool of blood, holding her breath she turns only to see that the reason for her slip was none other than tannie's carcass. Now she screams with tears in her eyes, that's when she hears a loud growl and then she turns her head to the right. There she sees it, with blood dripping through its teeth and dark eyes fixed on her.
Aditi had always known that wolves were by far not a common thing in these woods, but they did live here, even though she hasn't encountered one her whole life.
When she was younger her mother had always forced her to have wolf whistle handy just in case of something happening but of course she would encounter one now when she didn't have it.
Running off probably wasn't an option. What had she heard about wolves so far? There must have been something that would be useful right now right?....
Wow nothing. Who was the smartass that decided to not teach such things in a town with possible chances of encountering such predators.
Aditi tried her best not to frighten the wild animal when she took a step back, but the wolf took a huge leap and jumped at her before she could get there, knocking her over as a result. Aditi winched as her head landed on the woodland floor; the wolf's jaws were inches from her face and its weight knocked the breath out of her. She could see stars at the time.
Accepting her fate as dog food, Aditi closed her eyes, but the expected pain didn't come. Instead came a voice "Wake up".
She opened her eyes only to see its mouth again opening wide and... screaming?
"The files need to be submitted at my desk by 10:40 am next Thursday!"
Aditi closes her eyes, only to jolt open and see that she's still in the class, she has slept halfway through it and had that dream. Aditi brings her eyes to the front where the teacher was still talking,
"Have a nice weekend students and do not forget to submit your files on Thursday, with your last assignment being a creative poem/story starting with - 'on a wintery morning in the woods' goodbye! "
