Chapter 1: Alpha Mason's Arrival
Haven's pov
My name is Haven. At least... that's what my mother used to call me. I don't remember much from when I was little. Only small things. My mother's smile, and my father's strong arms. The way they used to hold my hands. Then.... the war happened. The war between Blood Moon Pack and Silver Moon Pack. Everything became fire. Blood and...Screams.
With thay, I got separated from my parents that day. I waited for them. I looked for them. But they never came back.
Since then, I've lived in Silver Moon Pack with Alpha Marcus Blackwood and Luna Lydia Blackwood. People think they saved me. But they didn't. They turned me into a servant. Their daughter, Eleanor Blackwood, became my master. And me? I became the girl that cleaned after her everyday mess. The girl nobody cared about. The girl everyone forgot. Or tried to.
Five days ago Luna Lydia locked me inside a storage room with no food, little water.
Because Eleanor blamed me for ruining one of her dresses. I thought I was going to die there. This morning they finally let me out. Not because they cared. Because they needed someone to clean. Today was an important day. Alpha Mason Ravenwood of the Blood Moon Pack was coming for a meeting. Everybody was running around preparing. And of course...That work fell on me.
I dragged a bucket of water into the meeting room and started scrubbing the floor. My body still hurt from being locked up. My stomach was empty. But I kept cleaning. I had no other choice. I didn’t even have an idea if I was going to be fed after working, but all I could do was work to at least.... survive. I was on my knees wiping the floor when the door suddenly opened. I froze.
Then, Eleanor walked in. Her beautiful blonde hair fell over her shoulders. A smile was on her face. The kind of smile that always brought me trouble. She looked around the room. Then at me. Then at the floor. I knew she was up to no good.
"You call this clean?" She spoke.
I quickly lowered my head. "I tried my best, Eleanor." I explained, knowing it still wasn't going to solve anything.
She scoffed. "Your best is useless."
Before I could say anything, she lifted her foot and kicked the bucket. Water splashed everywhere. Across the floor and across me. The room I had spent the whole morning cleaning was ruined in seconds. My chest tightened. But I said nothing. I already knew better. Eleanor folded her arms..
"Look at this mess." I stared at the water. She was the one who spilled it. Yet somehow it was still my fault. "Go fetch another bucket and start over."
"Yes, Eleanor."
I bent down to pick up the bucket.
But before I could stand, Eleanor suddenly stepped on my hand. Hard. Pain shot through my fingers. I was starved for almost s week and locked up in a dark place, but now I'm being punished for nothing.
"Eleanor..." I winced in pain, my voice barely above a whisper. "That hurts."
Her eyes narrowed.. A second later...SLAP My head snapped to the side. I fell back onto the floor. Tears instantly filled my eyes. "Who asked you to speak?" she snapped.
I covered my cheek and tried not to cry.
But the tears came anyway. All i could think was, what exactly did I do deserve all of this? Or, was this all I would go through till I die? Just then another voice sounded from the door..
"Eleanor."
We both looked up. It was Luna Lydia Blackwood. Eleanor quickly stepped away. "Mother." She called.
Luna Lydia entered the room. She glanced at me sitting on the floor. Then looked away like I was trash. "You should let her work." A smile appeared on her face as she looked at Eleanor. "You should be getting ready."
Eleanor smiled. "Why, mother?"
Luna Lydia laughed softly. "Alpha Mason is arriving today." At the mention of his name, Eleanor's eyes lit up. Luna Lydia noticed and smirked. "Who knows? Maybe after today's deal he may take a liking to you." Eleanor straightened immediately.
"You think so?"
"Of course."
For years Alpha Marcus and Luna Lydia had wanted to get close to Blood Moon Pack. Alpha Mason was powerful....Rich and Feared. If Eleanor managed to catch his attention, their family would gain even more power. Eleanor giggled.
"You're right, Mother."
"Go get dressed."
"Yes, Mother."
She shot me a smug look before leaving.
The moment she was gone, Luna Lydia turned to me. All traces of kindness disappeared. "And you."
I quickly stood despite the pain in my hand.
"Yes, Luna Lydia."
"What are you still doing on the ground?"
"I'm sorry, Luna"
"Then stop talking and get back to work."
"Yes, Luna Lydia."
I grabbed the bucket. As I turned to leave, her voice stopped me. "And Haven."
My heart sank.
"Yes, Luna?"
"Do not show your face before Alpha Mason."
I looked down. "Yes, Luna."
"If he sees you and gets offended... and he decides not to make this deal because of you..." Her eyes became cold. Then sje continued. "Consider yourself dead." Fear ran through me.
"Yes ma'am."
Then I quickly left the room. I left the meeting room with the empty bucket in my hand. My cheek was still burning from Eleanor's slap. My hand hurt too. I looked down at it. The mark from her shoe was already turning red. I swallowed the lump in my throat and kept walking. Crying wouldn't change anything. It never did. As I reached the well outside, I heard people whispering. Then I heard the sound of cars.
The pack members quickly lined up. Some bowed their heads. Others stood aside.I lifted my eyes. And then I saw them. Three men stepped out of the first black car.
The man in front was taller than everyone around him. He had dark hair and broad shoulders. His face looked calm. But there was something scary about him. Something powerful. Something that made people move out of his way without him saying a word. Alpha Mason Ravenwood. Beside him stood a man with brown hair and sharp eyes. His Beta. Beta Damien Cross. The other man was smiling slightly as he looked around. His Gamma. Gamma Xavier Knight.
The three of them walked towards the pack house. Pack warriors bowed their heads as they passed. I don't know why but I couldn't stop staring. Maybe because this was the man people spoke about all the time. The Alpha from the pack that destroyed my life. The Alpha from the pack that fought the war. The war that took my parents.
"What are you staring at?" I screamed and nearly dropped my bucket. I turned around. "Mira!" A smile immediately broke across my face. Before I knew it, I had thrown my arms around her. For the first time in days, I felt happy. Mira hugged me tightly.
"Oh Haven."
Her voice broke. "I'm so sorry." I blinked.
"For what?"
She pulled back. "For not helping you." Guilt filled her eyes. Mira was the only person in the Silver Moon Pack who loved and cared for me. She was like a mother to me, and of course she was very beautiful even for her age.
"When Luna Lydia locked you away, I wanted to do something." I smiled sadly.
"Mira." I called her name gently.
"No. Let me finish."
Tears filled her eyes. "They're the Alpha and Luna." She lowered her voice. "And I
if I went against them, they would punish me. They might even kill me." I squeezed her hand.
"It's okay."
"I should have tried."
"It's okay," I repeated.
Then her eyes suddenly widened. She grabbed my injured hand. "Haven!"
I winced in pain calling her name gently.
"Mira."
Her voice rose. "This bruise is fresh." Her eyes narrowed. "Was it Eleanor?" I quickly looked away. That was enough answer. Mira gasped.
"Moon Goddess." She carefully touched my hand. "She did this today?" I nodded.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"Just when the managed to release you. One day I'm going to pour hot soup on her head, I swear by the Moon godess." Despite everything, I laughed. But a small laugh. Then, Mira smiled.
"There she is."
"What?"
"My Haven."
I looked down shyly. It had been a long time since someone called me that with love. Then Mira's face darkened. Her eyes moved towards Alpha Mason's retreating figure. A frown appeared.
"I heard Alpha Mason is coming today."
"Yes." I looked at him too. "He already arrived." Mira folded her arms. "I don't like him." Neither did I. My smile disappeared.
"I know."
"His pack started the war." The words hurt. Every time. Every single time it was said. "If that war never happened..." Mira whispered. I lowered my eyes. My voice came out small.
"My parents would still be alive." Silence fell between us. Neither of us knew what to say. After a moment Mira sighed.
"I have to go."
I nodded. "Okay." She hugged me one more time.
"Take care of yourself Haven. "
"You too Mira."
"And.... stay away from Eleanor." She added. I laughed softly. "As if she lets me get close enough to choose." Mira rolled her eyes. Then she walked away. I watched her until she disappeared. Then I grabbed the bucket. Filled it with water. And headed back towards the pack house. When I reached the meeting room, I pushed the door open with my shoulder. The heavy bucket almost slipped from my hands. I took one step inside. Then froze. Actually, I regretted my life the moment I stepped in. Everyone was already there. Alpha Marcus Blackwood. Luna Lydia Blackwood.
Eleanor. Alpha Mason. Beta Damien.
Gamma Xavier. The entire room went silent.
They were all staring at me.
My heart dropped. Was this a trap? The thought of what was going to happen to me after the Alpha left made a shiver run down my spine. I had come too late. The meeting had already started. Luna Lydia shot to her feet. Her face twisted with anger. "Didn't I tell you not to show your face, you filth?"
My hands tightened around the bucket. Fear immediately filled me.
"I apologise, Luna Lydia." I lowered my head. "It was because you asked me to clean the room." My voice shook.
"I got distracted." I paused, staring at Eleanor who caused it. Then I continued "...and spilled the water." I swallowed hard. "So I had to fetch another bucket." The room stayed silent. "I had no idea Alpha Mason had already arrived." I bowed my head lower. "Please forgive me."
Luna Lydia looked ready to explode. I was so....dead and prepared for the worse to come after this. Alpha Marcus quickly turned to Alpha Mason.
"My apologies, Alpha Mason." His voice held embarrassment. "This servant has no manners. She'll leave immediately, and we'll make sure to punish her after." He glared at me and spoke, "Haven."
I flinched.
"Get out!"
"Yes Alpha Marcus." I turned around. Ready to leave. And get ready for my punishment after they were done with whatever they were doing. But then—
The deep voice stopped me. My feet froze. The room froze too.
"NO!" The voice of Alpha Mason spoke. Slowly, I turned around. Alpha Mason was looking directly at me. Luna Lydia blinked. "Alpha Mason?"
For some reason, his eyes seemed darker now. I was in a deeper trouble than I ever expected, I just offended the Alpha. What better punishment did he have for me? His gaze slowly moved over me. My face. My torn dress. The bruise on my hand. The fading mark on my cheek. Then his jaw tightened. His fingers curled against the table. A strange look crossed his face.
One I couldn't understand. What was he thinking? It looked almost like... Anger. But not at me. It was.....at them.
Alpha Marcus forced a smile. "Alpha Mason, she's just a servant, I already promised to punish her after you leave." Alpha Mason didn't even look at him. His eyes remained on me. Then he spoke. His voice low. And.......Dangerous. "Who did that to her hand?" The room instantly became silent. My breath caught. Nobody had ever asked me that before. Nobody had ever cared.
And for the first time since my parents disappeared... I felt every eye in the room turn away from me... And towards the people who had hurt me. If this was a dream, I never want to wake up.
