Secrets And Lies

Chapter 9: Secrets and Lies Sophia had always known Damian was keeping things from her. It was part of the arrangement—this wasn’t a real marriage, just a business transaction. But standing in that ballroom, hearing Madeline’s words, seeing Damian’s hesitation, it felt different. More personal. She had asked him a simple question. "Did you really date her?" And instead of answering outright, he hesitated. That hesitation meant yes. As the gala continued around them, Sophia forced herself to stay composed. She smiled when necessary, played the perfect fiancée, let Damian’s hand rest at her waist like they were the most in-love couple in the room. But inside? Inside, she was furious. --- Scene Break: Confrontation at the Penthouse By the time they returned to Damian’s penthouse that night, the tension was unbearable. The moment they stepped inside, Sophia turned to face him. “Why didn’t you tell me?” Damian sighed, removing his jacket and tossing it onto the couch. “Because it doesn’t matter.” Sophia scoffed. “Doesn’t matter? Damian, you dated the woman who’s been trying to intimidate me since day one, and you didn’t think that was relevant?” He rubbed his temples, clearly irritated. “It was years ago. Before I even knew you.” “That’s not the point!” she snapped. “She clearly thinks she has some kind of claim on you. And you not telling me? That makes me look like a fool.” His jaw clenched. “I didn’t tell you because it’s over. And because I knew she’d try to use it against you.” Sophia folded her arms. “Well, congratulations. She did.” Damian sighed, stepping closer. “Listen to me, Sophia. Whatever I had with Madeline—it was nothing. A mistake. One I don’t intend to repeat.” Sophia wanted to believe him. But the doubt was already there, curling in her chest like smoke. And something told her Madeline wasn’t going to let this go so easily. --- Scene Break: The Threat Escalates The next morning, Sophia arrived at the office feeling drained. She hadn’t slept much, her mind replaying the conversation with Damian over and over. But whatever frustration she had with him would have to wait, because the moment she stepped into her office, she knew something was wrong. Her chair was slightly out of place. Papers on her desk were shifted, not how she had left them. And then she saw it. A single red rose, resting on top of her files. Sophia’s heart pounded as she picked up the small card tucked beside it. “You can still walk away.” Her fingers tightened around the card. No name. No signature. But she didn’t need one. She knew exactly who had left it. And she was done playing nice. --- Scene Break: Taking Control Later that day, Sophia stormed into Madeline’s office, slamming the rose onto her desk. Madeline looked up, her smirk slow and smug. “Well, hello to you too.” Sophia leaned in, her voice low and sharp. “Stay. Out. Of. My. Life.” Madeline’s smirk didn’t waver. “Or what?” Sophia refused to back down. “You’re desperate. Clinging to a past that doesn’t exist anymore. Damian doesn’t want you, and no amount of intimidation will change that.” Madeline chuckled, standing from her desk. “You think this is about Damian?” Sophia narrowed her eyes. “Isn’t it?” Madeline stepped closer, lowering her voice. “You really don’t know what you’ve walked into, do you?” A chill ran down Sophia’s spine. Madeline smiled. “This isn’t about a man, sweetheart. It’s about power. And if you think you can stand in my way, you’re even more naïve than I thought.” Sophia’s pulse pounded. “I’m not afraid of you.” Madeline’s smile widened. “Good. That’ll make this more fun.” Sophia turned on her heel and walked out, her hands clenched into fists. Madeline was planning something. And whatever it was, Sophia knew one thing— She wasn’t going to let that woman win.
