In a kingdom where power is dictated by ancient rituals and forced pairings, Elena Mirrortongue is marked as the Inverse—an outcast, a bearer of a curse that has haunted her people for centuries. When her mark manifests violently at her Coming-of-Age Ceremony, she is labeled a harbinger of death, the one destined to break her mate’s bond and bring chaos to the kingdom.

But Elena refuses to be bound by fate. With the help of Roan Windborne, a warrior prince whose own family stands against the rebellion, she begins to unravel the truth: the Inverse Mark isn’t a curse, but a symbol of freedom, a force capable of shattering the oppressive system that has controlled their world. As they seek allies among those who’ve been silenced for too long, Elena must face the priests, the kingdom’s oldest enemies, and expose the lies that have bound her people for generations.

In a race against time, Elena must choose whether to embrace her destiny or destroy it. But in a world built on forced bonds, can one person’s choice truly set them all free?

Chapter 1: Whispers of Mirror Lake
The air in the dense forests beneath Mirror Moon Mountain was always cool, even at the height of summer. Elena Mirrortongue could feel the silence wrapping around her, the only sounds being the soft rustling of the leaves and the distant calls of the thunderwolves that roamed the higher cliffs. She wasn't like them, nor did she ever feel the need to be. A quiet life by Silvermist Lake was all she'd ever wanted. She crouched low by the edge of the water, gathering herbs with careful hands. The lake shimmered in the fading light, its surface smooth like glass, reflecting the deepening colors of the sky. Her mind wandered as she reached for a sprig of starblossom, a herb essential for the healing salves she crafted. The lake was always beautiful in the evening, but there was something unnerving about its stillness. The villagers spoke of the lake's curse, of course. A prophecy that said every thirty years, the lake would choose one to bear the Inverse Mark. A person whose bond would bring death to their mate and chaos to the clan. She dismissed it, of course. Superstition. No one had ever seen it happen. And the priests who recited the tales were often the same ones who feared her touch, whispered behind their hands about her parentage. The orphan girl of the woods who never quite fit in. Elena's fingers paused mid-reach. Her gaze shifted to the surface of the lake, her reflection rippling ever so slightly as the breeze stirred the air. Tomorrow was the day of the Coming-of-Age Ceremony. The thought sent a chill through her. It was a rite all her peers had been waiting for, eagerly anticipating the day when the bond Mark would appear, signifying their destined pair. The bond that would forever shape their lives. “Elena!" a voice called out from behind her. She turned, her heart leaping at the unexpected sound. It was Aleron, the village elder's son, carrying a basket of gathered herbs himself. He smiled at her warmly, though there was a flicker of uncertainty in his eyes. “Are you ready for tomorrow?" he asked, his voice filled with a mix of excitement and concern. Elena forced a smile. “As ready as I'll ever be." Aleron set down his basket and joined her by the water. His gaze, however, lingered a bit too long on the lake's surface, where his reflection was also rippling. “The elders say the prophecy will be fulfilled tomorrow," he said quietly, his voice lowering as if the lake itself might be listening. “That it's finally time for the Inverse Mark." Elena felt a knot tighten in her stomach, but she shrugged it off. “You don't really believe that, do you?" Aleron hesitated, his lips pressing into a thin line. “I don't know what to believe, Elena. It's... it's always been a story, but stories have a way of coming true. Especially here." The mention of the prophecy made Elena's heart race. The tales she'd heard as a child now seemed to take on new meaning. It wasn't just superstition, not if Aleron was this unsettled. “I'm not afraid," she said, though the words felt hollow even to her. “You should be," Aleron said gently. “The Inverse Mark... it's no simple thing. If the legends are true, it means you'll be bound to someone—someone whose death you'll cause." Elena looked away, her heart beating faster. This was the weight of her destiny, wasn't it? It was inevitable. A bond forged not by choice, but by fate. And if she had to believe in anything, it was that the mark would appear tomorrow. Whether she wanted it or not. The silence between them grew heavy, only broken by the soft rippling of the lake. Elena turned her gaze back to the water, searching for some sign, some answer that might make the unease in her chest go away. A sudden breeze picked up, and the surface of the lake shifted as if the very air around it had been disturbed. Elena squinted at the water, her breath catching. The lake's reflection—was it her imagination? No, there, on the water's surface, she could see it. A faint image of a wolf. But unlike anything she had ever seen before. A wolf with markings that swirled in patterns she couldn't understand. Her heart skipped a beat. “Elena," Aleron whispered, his voice sharp with worry. “Do you see that?" Before she could answer, the ground beneath them seemed to tremble, and the breeze picked up, turning into a wind that howled through the trees. “Elena! It's time," Aleron said, his voice urgent. “We need to get back. The ceremony is tomorrow." But Elena couldn't tear her eyes away from the lake. She saw the wolf's image more clearly now—its form shifting, its eyes glowing faintly with an otherworldly light. Something inside her stirred. The mark... her mark... was it already choosing? ---
