It didn’t take long, and they finally arrived at the police station. They reported the case of the baby that was left on his doorsteps. The police officers told them to wait for a few months until there would be someone who would claim the baby to be theirs, if not, then the adoption process could begin. Since everyone knew that he could afford to give all the baby’s needs, they knew that he just needed to discuss everything to the children’s welfare about the process of the adoption.
Vito was not having any second thoughts. He was silently praying that no one would come and claim the baby.
After they were already done in the police station, they stepped out and then headed to the car.
“Alan, let's go back to the company. I will drop you there, but I need to go back in the house like what I told you earlier. Cancel all my appointments for today,” he said to his assistant.
“Alright, sir, I--- I will do that,” Alan said with confusion in his voice. He could understand him since he had never done this before. He was strict in his schedule and under no circumstance he would be messing up with his appointments.
But Vito knew that he wanted to go with Cathy to buy all the things that the baby needed. He wanted to be there to check that he got everything for him to be settled. So, he just brushed off the confusion and shock that he saw in Alan’s face.
Besides, he didn’t have to explain himself to him.
After dropping Alan in front of the company, Vito went straight home to pick up Cathy and the baby. He couldn’t explain the excitement that he was feeling inside. He wanted to see the innocent face of the baby. He wanted to carry him but at the same time he was also afraid because he might break his bones. He knew that the baby’s bones were still soft, and he couldn’t help but feel nervous just in case.
Was this the same as how fathers feel when they go home after a day’s work and see their children?
He shook his head because of the thought. He was not the real father of the baby and yet he was having all these kinds of things running inside his head.
Vito quickly got out of the car and then he saw Cathy was already walking, going in his direction with the baby with her. He was like a husband looking to his wife and his child as they were greeting him as he came back from work.
He wanted to hit his head because of the picture that suddenly flashed in his mind. How on earth would he be imagining Cathy as his wife? She was so young and there was no way that he would be messing up with his best friend’s sister.
He wanted to scold himself because of the thoughts that were starting to run from his head. He couldn’t believe it.
“We are ready,” Cathy said as soon as she got near him. The woman seemed excited. He looked at the baby and he saw him sleeping soundly inside Cathy’s arms. It looked like the woman could really calm the baby down. “I thought you were just going to wait in your car,” she added, which brought him back to reality.
“Are you okay?” Cathy asked when he didn’t respond to the woman. She was looking intently at him.
He didn’t notice that Cathy and the baby were already close to him because of the things that were running inside his head. He was surprised because he never thought about this before. He had never seen himself with a baby even in his wildest dreams, but he couldn’t deny the excitement that he had when he saw the baby in front of his door. He felt like there was something in the baby that got his full attention.
“Oh, y--- yes. I am just supposedly waiting for you inside, but I also need to use the washroom,” he quickly replied though he was stammering at first. He couldn’t understand why all of a sudden, he felt like he was not himself. “Just wait for me here. I am just going to use the washroom,” he added after that he went to the guest washroom which was next to the dining room.
He immediately went inside.
Vito took a deep breath and then he washed his hands. He looked at himself in the mirror. He was trying to understand himself because he couldn’t explain why there was a sudden excitement he was feeling since the baby arrived earlier. He even cancelled all of his appointments which he never did before. He could have just asked Cathy to do the shopping, but he wanted to be with them. He wanted to be handed on when it comes to everything that the child needed. He wanted the best for the baby.
Vito seemed very interested in the little boy and there were a lot of questions that popped up inside his mind. Who left the baby in front of his house? Do they even know that he was the one who was living there? Those were one of the questions that were inside his head.
It seemed like his daily routine would be changing from today onwards. There would be a lot of things that he should be expecting to happen for this additional part of his life. He got out of the washroom, and he saw Cathy was standing next to the car along with the baby in her arms.
He quickly pressed the open button of the car with the remote control that he was holding. The car door opened and Cathy went inside of the car with the baby.
“I told you to wait inside the car. I am sure you are already tired carrying the baby,” he said to Cathy.
The woman shook her head. “No, I am okay,” she replied. “By the way, your baby is a boy. What will you call him? Do you already have a name for him?” She asked him one after another.
So, what name would he be giving his son? That never entered his mind earlier when he picked him up.
Vito was stopped from what he was doing. Cathy was right. He hadn’t thought about that yet. Since he was in a hurry earlier, he forgot to think about the name that he was going to give his soon-to-be-son.
“Well, I want to name him Vincent. He will be Vincent Neri,” he said and then smirked. That sounded like the little boy was just his sibling. Vincent, Vito and then Victor. He couldn’t help but smile because of that.
“That’s a nice name. I am sure his mother is very happy that you gave that name to him,” Cathy said, agreeing with the name that he thought about the child.
He shook his head when he heard what Cathy said.
“As if you know his mother,” he said as he raised his eyebrows. Cathy was just smiling sheepishly while looking at him.
He couldn’t help but smile back with the kind of smile that the woman was projecting at him. It was as if the woman had something inside her head, but he couldn’t just figure out what.
“I think we should put him back in his bassinet since we still don’t have a car seat. What do you think?” Cathy suddenly asked him when they were already inside the car.
He looked at Cathy and the baby. She was right. The woman might get tired of holding the little one while they were on their way to the shopping mall.
“Oh, yes, that’s a good idea. Let me go and get it,” he said and then he got off into the car to go back inside of the house.
Cathy was just looking at Vito’s broad shoulders who was walking back in the house. She couldn’t help but smile to see the attention that the man was giving to the little boy he found on his doorsteps earlier. He was so eager to get all the things that the baby needed. He even gave him a name, Vincent. In fact, he could have just gone to the shopping mall but he wanted to be with them.
He could say that this boy would be very lucky to have a father like Vito. Because she knew that Vito was a good man inside and out. She knew him for the longest time because he happened to be his best friend’s brother. Vito was kind and generous to everyone despite the kind of family they have. She could still remember how Vito had helped her brother, Emmanuel, several times.
She was looking at the baby who was sleeping in her arms. He looked so fragile. She couldn’t believe that someone would just leave a baby like him on doorsteps.
If someone would be looking at them, they were a perfect image of mother and child, but she was so young to have a child and on top of that, she couldn’t afford to take care of a baby especially since she was still jobless and still going to college.
Vito had all the resources to take care of the baby. But they could really look like a perfect family of three. Vito would be the father of the baby while she was the mother. She couldn’t help but smirk because of the thoughts that were running inside her head.
She couldn’t deny to herself that she really liked Vito since they were still young. She could still remember when she felt it. She was ten years old back then. That was the first time that she saw Vito. He was with his grandfather, and they were visiting them in her grandfather’s ranch. Before they were also rich like Vito’s family but since her grandfather started to get sick and later died, they had to sell their properties and the only thing left for them was the two-story house where she was living. Her only brother needed to leave the country and work in London.
Emmanuel was sending her allowance for her daily expenses but that was not enough. So, she decided to do all these things without her brother’s knowledge. She had to earn on her own.
“Here, put the baby here,” Vito said as soon as he opened the car door which brought her back to her senses. He put the bassinet on her side and then she laid down the baby there.
They were heading to the shopping mall. Cathy was thinking if it was right to ask Vito about all the questions that were running inside her mind.
She took a deep breath as she didn’t know if she should be voicing it out or not. She was having a second thought because she couldn’t tell what the man’s reaction would be but, in the end, Cathy was unable to control her tongue. When the light stopped at a red light, she turned to Vito and spoke.
She didn’t know where on earth she got all the courage to ask Vito but she knew that she had to hear the answer from him or else she would be thinking about it non-stop.
“Vito, what if you find out that this baby happens to be your real son? That he is your flesh and flood?” Cathy asked in a low voice and then she bit her lower lips. Though she felt nervous about Vito’s reaction. She couldn’t believe that she really had asked the man that question.
Her heart was pounding so fast. It was hammering inside her ribcage and she could feel that it might collapse any moment because of how fast her heart beat was. She couldn’t help but think that the man might kick her out being Vincent’s Nanny.
