Ultimatum
WHAM!
The door fell off its hinges; hitting the ground behind me after I slammed it.
I was pissed.
“He can’t do this!” I thought. “I was born to be alpha ,he can’t just pass me over.”
My mind is running through the bulls**t my father just said to me.
My twin brother stood in silence behind him ; a smirk on his face.
“Son, I am ready to hand over the title of alpha. I’ve been alpha a little over thirty years. I took over shortly after I became 18.” My father said.
Excitement and surprise hitting me.
“This is it!” I thought to myself.
I've been waiting three years for my father to let me be Alpha.
I’m twenty, most guys with my pedigree were alpha by now.
My father had just kept telling me I wasn’t ready yet.
Now, finally, he is going to hand the pack over to me.
Our pack has been growing steadily over the past fifteen years. We now have seven-hundred pack members because of a pack that just joined.
Their alpha challenged my father and lost.
Most wolves would rather join another pack than become rogues. We were the third largest pack in our region.
I want to make us the first.
“Well, son, I’ve decided that every great alpha needs a great luna by his side.
A great luna not only helps keep the alpha calm and thinking rationally.
She helps unify the pack and brings in the next generation.
It’s a job just as important as the alpha’s.
This pack needs a luna right now more than ever.
Ever since your mother was killed by that hunter; the pack has been in pain to.
We need another luna before we all start crumbling apart.” My father said.
I felt a sinking feeling; and the pain of losing my mom.
I knew where this was going and I didn't like it.
“You were born first Ace, so it is your birthright to be alpha. However, Bret here has had his mate, Cheyenne, ever since he was nineteen.
Your mother got to meet her. She adored her before she died.” My father said with sullen eyes.
“I’m giving you a month to find your mate, otherwise your brother Bret will become alpha. Cheyenne would become his luna.
If that happens, the position of beta will fall to you.” My father said with a sigh.
Anger and pain started rising throughout my body.
“I just can’t keep this up anymore without her son. It’s been six months and I can barely keep up with the pack.” My father said with a whisper. It is true the old man was starting to look worse as time went on.
My brother and I figured he wouldn’t be here with us by this time next year. When your mate dies it either kills you right along with them, or kills you very slowly. Very few live the rest of their lives after their mate dies, and even fewer get second chances after rejection or their mate dying.
Our father was dying slowly right in front of our eyes. We could see him slowly thinning out.Almost as if he was a balloon someone was slowly letting the air out of. It was heart wrenching to see the man that seemed so larger than life growing up starting to seem so small. Either way I couldn’t believe he was giving me such a harsh ultimatum.
He knows this is what I’ve been working hard for my whole life. I rushed out of his office.
I jumped down the stairs and through the front door; breaking through it.
I ran to a tree where I keep one of my personal backpacks after shifting. I took my clothes off so fast I almost ripped them.I tossed them in with my backup clothes along with my phone, shoes and wallet. I shifted and picked up the bag with my teeth.
I turned just in time to see my brother approaching me.
I let out a deep, raspy , warning growl and blocked my mindlink before he could say anything.
I turned tail and ran into the trees.
Unknown POV:
“Come on! You all are so slow, I could have done this trail twice if I was by myself.” Boomed out Trevor from about twenty feet up the hiking trail.
“Shut up Trevor! First off, no one cares how fast you can do the trail. We are hiking for the experience and to enjoy our last few months together. Since the three of us are going our separate ways for college.” Trudy said glaring at him.
“Yeah…Whatever Trudy.” Trevor mumbled to himself.
We were hiking a four mile trail that came full circle through the mountains and forest.
I loved being in the forest,it was such a peaceful place.
The stones that protruded through the trail gave the steep incline even more of a challenge to hike.
This trail was a frequent favorite of ours. It was the first trail our trio of friends had hiked. Not including Trevor,he was not really a friend, more of a pain in the ass.
Alistair asked us to allow him to tag along today since Trevor is his brother.
Since Trevor is a year older than us; alot of his block head jock buddies had left last year for college.
Making it off of their football scholarships. Trevor would have easily been able to go into the NFL or to college, unlike them he was actually smart. He was the best quarterback this town had seen in years. I had no idea what was holding him back. Trevor just seemed unfocused and unmotivated.
Soon we will be leaving here too. Trudy will be off to Spelman College in Atlanta to major in history. Trudy wants to dig deep and uncover true history and artifacts.
The girl has such a strong will I know she will do whatever she sets her mind to.
Alistair says he is staying here in our home state of Oregon.
He is going to our state University for Earth Science, he wants to be a park ranger.
He knows his parents will probably make Trevor join the military if he hasn’t picked something by the time Alistair leaves.
Their mom is a veteran. His father is barely home because he went back to being a truck driver when Alistair started high school.
As for me, I was going to be a nurse. I’d been accepted to the University of Washington school of nursing. I wanted to help heal people.
I was going to miss being able to go hiking with Trudy and Alistair every week.
“ I’m going to miss you guys!” Trudy cried out. “It feels crazy that everything is changing and we all won’t be here anymore. I’m honestly afraid, we’ve all been together since Elementary school. Atlanta isn’t going to have trails like this, I think I’m going to lose a lot of my muscle.” Trudy whined.
“Yeah I know what you mean. I won’t have much time to be on any trails. Nursing school is going to be no joke. Not to mention a part time job. I’m going to be busy studying, working, and sleeping with any time I have left over.” I said with a sigh.
“I’ve never seen you study a day in my life Dawn.” Alistair said laughing.
“Hey all these brains don’t come naturally, I do have to work hard to maintain them.” I said.
“ I wonder what else you would work hard at…” Alistair said with a devilish smile winking at me.
I could feel the heat run up my thighs as I looked into his blue eyes.
Alistair was beautiful, he had dirty blond hair and stood just under six feet tall. He had an ever so light tan. He was the picture of an outdoorsman. I started imagining him as a shirtless lumberjack
“Ahem!”
Trudy said, looking away from us.
A wave of guilt washed over me.
Trudy and I have been friends since kindergarten.
I remember being in awe of her the day we met. Trudy had beautiful natural hair that was braided down her back. Her lovely dark skin that looked like rich dark chocolate.
She was reserved but wasn’t afraid to speak her mind, or stand her ground.
Especially when she was really passionate about something.
She just gave an air of elegance around her and she always carried her head high. I always believed she must have been descended from royalty.
It had been just the two of us until 4th grade when Alistair moved here. Then our trio became a duo again from eighth grade to tenth grade. Alistair got lost in being “Mr. Popular”after he had a major growth spurt and glow up.
We had both fallen in love with him in 9th grade and promised each other we would never go out with him or let him know of our feelings.
“Give me a break” Trevor mumbled under his breath looking at Trudy, rolling his eyes.
I started to hike up ahead of them. As I was climbing up over a set of rocks in the trail. I heard Alistair behind me.
“Mmmm!” Alistair said “This is some good water.”
I looked back to see Alistair two feet away drinking some water, and glancing at my butt.
I finished pulling myself up from the rocks and stood up.
“ You're such a pervert Alistair! “ I yelled.
“ Me a pervert, well I’d never… oh you thought I was making that noise for you? Now Dawn, that is awfully self centered” Alistair teased.
I rolled my eyes so hard before turning to walk on.
Trevor stood there laughing. I hated when Alistair started acting like his sexist, perverted brother. I kept hiking forward as fast as I could.
Alistair had been flirting more and more with me ever since the beginning of 12th grade.
I was never certain if he was being serious or if his pig brother was putting it up to him.
Either way I couldn't imagine that if he had to pick between Trudy and I that he would pick me.
Trudy has a hourglass figure and stands at five feet six inches tall.
Beauty, brains and body. The way she dressed was classy and sexy.
I on the other hand have peanut butter colored skin.
My right eye is brown and my left one is a hazelish-green due to my heterochromia.
My boobs aren’t as big as Trudy’s, and my type 3a hair is usually in a messy bun on top of my head.
He must just be teasing me I thought.
“Hey slowpokes, if we are going to make it back to the cars before next year then lets pick up the pace!” Trevor bellowed out from ten feet ahead of me.
“How did you pass me Trevor!” I yelled.
“Maybe you should stay out of your head and focus on the trail or you will continue to eat my dust tomboy!” Trevor said snickering.
We hiked for another ten minutes when I needed a bathroom break.
“Hey I’m going to go use the bathroom, I’ll be right back.” I said
“Don’t wipe with any poison ivy!” Trevor laughed
I glared at him and caught Alistair and Trudy looking away giggling.
“Every dog has its day.” I said to Trevor as I walked into the forest.
I walked into the forest for a few minutes just to get out of earshot and to get privacy. All I had to do was pee really quickly.
I went and squatted by a tree and went to the bathroom. When I finished I could hear a stream in the distance. As I walked towards it I could see the trees clear to a beautiful stream that glistened with the setting sun's light.
I looked over to see a man floating in the stream face down.
Fear washed over me. I quickly threw my pack down and ripped my shoes off and jumped into the water.
“Please don’t be dead, please don't be dead'' I hoped in my head.
When I was almost within arms reach of the man all of a sudden he flinched away from me.
The man lifted up from the water and looked me dead in my face.
Anger flashed across his eyes, but was quickly replaced by a look I couldn't make out.
This man was drop dead gorgeous.
Vibrant green eyes that looked like emeralds stared into my soul.
Wavy jet black hair clung to his strong shoulders. Sexy couldn’t even compare to his chiseled jaw and sculpted body.
A tribal tattoo wrapped around his arm and stopped at his pecs. His skin was a light tan color, he looked like a dream.
My eyes almost rolled out my head. It felt like I swallowed my tongue as I went to speak.
Next thing I knew his arms were wrapping around me; crushing me to his body.
I felt his tongue slide into my mouth dispersing the words that were trapped there.
My mind went blank.
One of his hands came up and cupped my cheek, and then moved to free my hair of its messy bun prison.
This man had me trapped in a deep, passionate kiss.
He caressed the back of my neck and my eyes started to roll back in ecstasy.
Suddenly he pulled away and breathed deeply in the scent of my neck. I heard a low , gruff voice whisper “Mine.” in my ear.
My senses started to come tingling back.
That was my first kiss and it was amazing. He smelled of fresh rain and mint.
He looked deep into my eyes and then looked behind me and waded out of the water.
He gave me one last glance before disappearing into the woods.
“What was that all about?” I whispered out loud to myself.
My body felt hot with attraction and lust.
Was this a dream?
It didn’t feel real, I felt like I was floating down from a cloud.
I heard a twig snap and turned to see Trudy and Alistair coming through the trees.
Alistair’s face flushed red when he looked at me.
I wasn’t sure why.
“Dawn what happened. We thought you got kidnapped by a crazy axe murderer or something.” Trudy said her face taught with worry.
Trevor walked through the trees and froze like a deer in headlights.
“WHOA! NICE BRA TOMBOY!” Trevor yelled .
Trudy closed her eyes and pursed her lips together. Then she turned to glare at Trevor. Trevor made a “oh come on” gesture and rolled his eyes.
I looked down to see my white t-shirt drenched and clinging to my body. My reflection in the water showed my hair in defined loose waves after having gotten drenched through. My hair tie was gone. The stranger must have taken it when he took my hair out.
Embarrassment all of a sudden hit me.
Everyone could see my bra.
I was wearing a black bra that had a little lace and it was on full display now.
I quickly spun around.
“Close your eyes” I yelled
“Yes mam.” I heard the guys say in usion.
I swam over and wadded out of the water.
Trudy had a jacket tied around her waist, that she quickly untied and handed to me.
“Sorry I was hoping they wouldn’t notice before I got a chance to give you the jacket.” She whispered.
“Thanks.” I said.
As I pulled my wet shirt off and wrung it out. I zipped the jacket on.Trudy got a questioning look on her face.
“Dawn, why were you in the water anyway? You know we are trying to make it back to the car before nightfall.”Trudy said.
I mulled over it for a second.
They would probably think I was crazy if I told them the truth. That there was a man that I thought was dead floating face down in the stream. I jumped in to save him. Except he wasn’t dead and he was, gorgeous enough to let me forget myself and allow him to kiss me. Quite passionately, I might add.
“Oh I just got hot all of a sudden and decided to jump in and cool off!” I said, trying to sound nonchalant.
Trudy looked at me with her head to the side and raised her eyebrows.
That’s what she always does when she doesn’t believe what you're saying.
“If you say so,” Trudy said.
We all walked back to the cars for the next few minutes in silence. I wondered if they had seen the guy before he disapeared into the trees. No they would have been worried and asking me who he was if they had seen him. I wondered if I would see him again.
