Chapter 8 The Night Before Everything The Harrington estate had never felt so alive. Workers moved quietly through the halls, making final preparations for Charlotte's eighteenth birthday celebration. The gardens were decorated with soft lights. The ballroom was being arranged. Every detail reflected the importance of the occasion. But inside the family home, away from the preparations, Charlotte wanted nothing more than a quiet moment. She stood by the window in her bedroom, looking over the garden where she had spent countless afternoons growing up. Tomorrow, she would officially turn eighteen. A new stage of life would begin. She touched the bracelet on her wrist. A small smile appeared. Some things had remained constant through all the changes. Her family. Her friendship with Katherine. The feeling of belonging. --- A knock came at the door. Charlotte turned. "Come in." Katherine entered carrying a small box. Charlotte immediately smiled. "You are becoming suspicious." "Why?" "Because you always appear with gifts." Katherine rolled her eyes. "Not everything is a secret plan." Charlotte raised an eyebrow. "Coming from you, I am not convinced." Katherine laughed and handed her the box. "Open it." Charlotte carefully removed the cover. Inside was a small photo frame. It contained a picture of the two of them from years earlier. Both girls were younger. Both were laughing. Charlotte looked at it quietly. "You kept this?" "Of course." Charlotte smiled. "I look terrible." "You were eight." "I still looked terrible." Katherine laughed. "No, you looked happy." That answer made Charlotte pause. Because it was true. The photograph represented something simple. Before expectations. Before responsibilities. Before the world started telling them who they needed to become. Just friendship. --- "I remember that day," Charlotte said. Katherine smiled. "The charity event." "You were standing alone." "And you came to bother me." Charlotte laughed. "I did not bother you." "You asked if I was hiding." "Because you looked like you were hiding." Katherine shook her head. "I was just shy." "And now?" "Now I have learned to survive you." They both laughed. For a moment, the years disappeared. They were those two little girls again. Two friends who had no idea what life would bring. --- Later that evening, the Harrington family had dinner together. No business discussions. No advisers. No company matters. Just family. Richard looked at Charlotte across the table. "Tomorrow, you will receive many gifts." Charlotte smiled. "I know." "But remember something." She looked at him. "The most valuable things in life cannot be wrapped." Eleanor nodded. "Your father is right." Charlotte looked between them. "I already have the most valuable things." Richard smiled. "And what are those?" "My family." The answer pleased them both. --- After dinner, Charlotte received a final visitor. Lucien Laurent. He arrived with permission from the family, carrying a small package. Charlotte looked surprised. "You came tonight?" "I wanted to give you this before tomorrow becomes too busy." She accepted the package. Inside was an elegant fountain pen. Charlotte looked at it. "It is beautiful." Lucien smiled. "I thought you would need something meaningful." She turned it in her hand. The design was simple but refined. Then she noticed the engraving. "Write your own future." Charlotte read the words quietly. Lucien watched her reaction. "I know everyone has already decided what your future should look like." Charlotte looked at him. "But?" "But I think you should be the one who decides." For a moment, Charlotte said nothing. She liked that. Not the pressure. Not the expectations. The idea that her future belonged to her. "Thank you." She placed the pen carefully in her handbag. "I will keep it." Lucien smiled. "I hoped you would." --- After everyone left, Charlotte stood alone in her room. She placed the photo frame from Katherine beside her bed. The pen rested safely inside her handbag. The bracelet remained around her wrist. Three reminders. Her past. Her present. Her future. She had no idea that within hours, those three things would become the only pieces connecting her to the life she was about to lose. --- Across the city, a different conversation was taking place. Edward Blackwood sat in silence as he looked over documents. His wife watched him carefully. "Tomorrow is her birthday." Edward nodded. "Yes." "Do you ever feel guilty?" For the first time, his expression changed. Only slightly. "Guilt does not build empires." His wife looked away. The answer frightened her. Because she knew something was coming. Something that could never be undone. --- The night passed quietly. The city slept. The Harrington estate rested. And Charlotte Harrington closed her eyes believing that tomorrow would be the beginning of the greatest chapter of her life. She did not know it would also be the last night she lived as Charlotte Harrington
