The Beginning of It All
Prologue
There are times in your life where you sit and think where your life would be if even one single decision changed. One moment in time didn’t happen. If our paths didn’t line up the way it did. Would I still have the life I have now? Would I want if I knew better…..
Chapter 1 – Katerina
“Kat! Breakfast is ready!” My roommate shouted awakening me. As I moved the pillow and inhaled the smell of bacon my stomach curdled. Using my hand to block the smell I ran into the bathroom where I threw up the contents of my stomach. “Oh God,” I thought, “I can’t be. I just can't!” “Kat! Katerina, are you okay?” shouted Olivia, while banging on the bathroom door. Jeez, how do I even respond to that? Groaning I replied, “I’m fine Liv. I’m okay now but can you take the bacon off the stove before I come out?” Silence. I know exactly what she was thinking. What thoughts were passing through her head are this point in time because Livvy and I have been best friends practically our whole lives. We grew up on the same street so we were always friendly; but, in first grade when she pushed Isabelle down while she was bullying me. That was how she became my best friend til now. “Give me 5 minutes,” she said walking away. I know she was just giving me time to collect my thoughts because me talking about it but what do I even say to her? I flushed, got up and rinsed my mouth. While going through the motions brushing my teeth, I remember.
It was a month and a half ago when the last semester of junior year in college ended and Liv and I decided we should celebrate by having some well deserved drinks. See, I’m a double major student, majoring in Business as well as art since I would like to not only design; but, own my very own graphic design firm. When I say the course load is tough, I mean it’s been incredibly tough. Liv on the other hand is majoring in biology and minoring in chemistry because she wants to be a micro biologist. Yeah, I know. Like I said, we had a hell of a semester. So to celebrate the end of finals and by extension the end of the semester we did what any red blooded college student does to celebrate. Drinks and dancing. Dancing and drinks. What better way is there to let your hair down?
As we walked to our to our dorm, Liv bursts out singing, “ Tonighttttt we are young. So let’s set the world on firrreeeeeee!” I laugh joining in, “We can burn brighterrrrr than the sunnn!” as we continued hand in hand. Life was perfect. Back in our dorm Liv was emptying both our wardrobes for something to wear. “Why don’t you wear the cute little black number over there?” I asked. Liv pouted. “Oh c'mon. It’d look killer with your legs. Try it on for me,” “Urghhhh fineeeeeeee,” she said pulling it on. “Holy crap! Olivia you look amazing! Beyond amazing. You’re a knockout.” I mean with her tan and her gorgeous black hair so dark it almost looks blue, she got looks everyday but the dress showed her curves to perfection. She turned away from the mirror, her blue eyes shining,” You are so right!” she squealed, “Now let's get you into something.”
Six outfits. Six outfits later and still nothing. I’m just about to admit defeat when Liv said, “Kat, I think this would look amazing on your caramel skin.” Seeing the doubt on my face she grabbed my hand and put the dress in it. “Just try it on,” she coaxed, “ For me Please.” I roll my eyes. She knows I can never say no to her. I strip out of my clothes and pull on the dress quickly. Liv gasps. “OMG you look hot! You are definitely wearing that. It doesn’t even clash with you hair,” she adds seeing the doubt on my face. I catch my reflection in the mirror and realise she was right. Usually I can’t wear red because it clashes with my copper colour hair but for some reason it works. I can feel the excitement building.
Four hours later, after make-up and flat irons for Liv and just make-up and moisturizer for me we're out to the hottest club in town. Liv’s gorgeous black hair blows in the wind and I feel envious of it for a moment (since my hair in its natural state is made up of kinky curls) then shrug it off. I can never be envious of my best friend for what she can’t help. I turn my head toward El Diablo and we walk up to the bouncers. We smile and they let us in immediately and we squeal. This is going to be a memorable night. We sidle up to the bar to get some drinks and I feel someone's eyes on me. I do a discreet check along my peripheral vision and there……there I see him.
