Chapter 10 Tethering their horses well out of sight of the castle, the three men—elf, half-elf, and human—crept through the moonless darkness to the bridge Theirn and Castien had used as an escape route the last time they were there. Two guards stood at the foot of it in a halfhearted attempt to keep an eye out for intruders, and there were two more at the top. Castien held his hand up to warn the others to be still. Then, silently, he moved behind the guard farthest away and beckoned to Lathron to take the closer one. When Lathron was in position they acted in unison to slit the guards’ throats and then dropped them silently to the ground.
