Chapter 1
The sound of his crackling footsteps made my heart skip a beat, a pang of fear gripping me. His face was stern, his jaw clenched pretty well, like he was going to attack the next minute.
I had never seen him like this, sweat protruding down his face like he had run a hurdle and was here to dissipate his rage on something stronger than himself.
"Derick? What's happening?" I said, my hands trembling as he walked down the stairs, my luggage in his hands. It couldn't be… We haven't had an argument in months; what was going on?
My legs shake as I move; my body trembles with each step he makes. Hot tears had begun to roll down my eyes, my eyes almost bloodshot.
"Here, never come back here. Ever!!" He tossed my luggage, the hard body hitting me hard on the back. "Arghh!" He didn't bother moving, watching me grunt as I pushed the box away.
"What did I do, Derick? I'll change; I'll make sure I get it right even if it means I have to walk thousands of miles."
"You stink!"
I gazed into his expressionless face, wondering if he really meant it or if it was meant to be a joke. I raised my hands, taking in my scent, which still happens to be smelling of the luxurious perfume I had gotten from the gift shop the night before.
"That's it; you can't even recognize such an expression. You thought I spoke in the literal aspect." He chuckled, kicking my luggage back.
I staggered back, the harsh look on his face creeping me out. It felt like my memories had become fuzzy all of a sudden, my fluttering heart now pounding slower than usual.
"You can come in now, darling." He said, a smirk appearing on his face.
"Darling?"
I tilted my head back, my eyes searching for the image of a figure. A lady walked in, curvy and definitely beautiful. She had bangles and bracelets, which I acknowledged were from the Diablo's Fashion corporation, one of the most expensive fashion companies.
Her face became clear as she walked forward. The sight of a perfect frontal, which would cost nothing less than a thousand dollars.
"Lisa?" I murmured, wiping my eyes as the gap between us closed up.
"Katherine, how are you doing?" She held up a cherry smile. Her eyes were staring down at me; it felt like I was miserable, a captured wolf left at a zoo.
"What… What are you doing here?" I stammered.
She didn't respond, walking towards Derick like they had known each other for so long. She opened up her arms, and he engaged, their lips meeting for a blissful but intense kiss.
I felt my heart sink, a thousand needles pricking my skin as he drew her ass towards himself. I clutched my chest, stopping my heart from pounding faster than needed.
"He's my fiancé, Lisa! Have you forgotten?" I yelled.
They broke up, and she turned to look at me. Her eyebrows went from fuzzy to furrowed, staring at me like I had just said the forbidden. "Fiance? He's mine."
A hollow feeling suddenly appeared in the pit of my stomach, my trembling hands halting, the sound of my thumping heart getting louder and louder.
I turned to him, my eyes widened. He let out a laugh before his arm curled onto her waist, bringing her closer to himself.
"I picked you up from the gutters; do you really have an opinion? The standard between the both of you is longer than day to night. You're a low class, and I don't have any use for a low class like you." He chuckled and then went plain, "Wretched little lamb."
The man who had once delivered a set of kitchen utensils to my doorstep, the man I had fallen in love with after several cuisine dinners that I had paid the bills for, the man I had built up from zero to hero, calling me wretched?
I burst into laughter, tears streaming down my eyes with each "ha" that left my mouth.
"Honey, let's leave Katherine. It's already getting late, and we have to prepare for our engagement ceremony." She romanced his chest, going down till her hand met with his flap.
How could I be laughing when my whole world has come crumbling before my eyes? This was literally a nightmare I never thought could happen.
"Gale, you can assist her with her luggage." He said his hands wrapped around her waist as she led him up the stairs.
She has never gone up the stairs; how could she know where it led? It was clear that she had been here several times before. This affair had been going on behind my back for quite a while.
"Derick, remember this day. I'll watch you crumble to the depths, deeper than the gutters. Mark my words."
"Madam, it's time you left." Gale spoke.
I grabbed my luggage, balancing it on my body. My tears all dried up, beads of sweat dripping down from my head. He opened the door, taking to the right as I walked out of the house.
"Madam, I have been giving orders not to let you in any more. I wouldn't want a situation where he would rage out, for your safety."
I took one last look at the mansion I had helped him build, the thousands of sweat that had dripped as I labored and connected him through to everyone he ever knew. Memories of us playing around played in my head, but it was all gone now, silenced by his words.
It is said that a journey of a thousand miles starts from somewhere and ends happier than in the beginning. I thought I had journeyed enough to have my happy ending, but it turns out I still had much more to go.
I thought I had found love; my darkness turned to light, my sorrows turned to joy, and my loneliness filled in with a companion, but here I was still in the abyss of nothingness.
What a way to be the perfect girl.
