Seeing Mark Harris closely for the first time Maeve had to concede that he was a handsome man, his moustache and beard neat and his skin a colour no-one in Glasgow could match. Even in the light from the gas lamp above the mantelpiece she could see that his tan enhanced his very blue eyes. There were no signs of hard work in his long fingers, unlike the gnarled hands of all the men she knew - except the priest. He wore a heavy gold ring on his right hand, and there was a jewelled pin in his cravat. It caught the light, and she was surprised to see it was the head of a snake, with red jewels for eyes.
