Chapter 15

“What were you thinking!?” Damien suddenly started after they had been on the road for a while “I said aim to kill and yet you froze up when you had the chance to finish her off” he said in anger, he was furious, he had been as they packed and entered their Audi ‘rental’ headed for God knows where. Ryoka was furious as well, not at Damien though, at herself, well at Damien too, for making her go through such and still expecting that she go through with it, truly she had aimed to kill, using her dragon heat vision to scan and pinpoint the heart of the lady stalker. The knives had hit home perfectly, but the distance and probably a last moment shift from the lady had caused the knife not to kill her straight away, but Ryoka was sure it would be hard for the lady to survive the wound, especially considering she had shifted right after so as to escape. Damien had told her at one of their trainings that wounds worsen if the wounded shifts back, from human to dragon the wounds get larger as befitting the body of a dragon, and from dragon to human, the wounds shrink but not enough to scale such difference in size, so often shifting back from dragon to human with a fresh wound kills off the person. “I’m sorry” Ryoka said with a small voice despite her anger “But I haven’t done such before, I am nineteen, what did you think I was already a professional killer?” she said and her anger started creeping into her voice. “You are unbelievable, you know that” she said and faced him as he drove on “You asked me to kill and then yell at me for not achieving the kill in one fell swoop, when I wasn’t trained to be an assassin, or did you forget that you are only training me how to survive, how to defend myself, and when to fight when it is needed, not how to achieve perfect kills” she said already furious even as tears dropped from her eyes. “I’m sorry Ryoka, I really am” Damien said after a few seconds of silence “But I had already told you, it was kill or be killed out here, I might not be training you to kill out rightly, but it was implied, you could have save us this move had you been able to finish it off, one more throw from you was all that was needed, rather than I running across trying to lay my sword on her” Damien said, his own furiousness still apparent. Ryoka only huffed and stayed silent, deep down, she was glad that she hadn’t finished the lady off, apart from the fact that she had not expected the person to be a lady, there was something about the lady that really got to her, it was damning just to think about it. The lady’s eyes had looked like her father’s, she couldn’t get over this fact, especially considering the fact that she had turned into a diamond-back, the exact same breed as her father. One more thing was that the lady had looked straight at Ryoka, a longing look, it wasn’t the look a bad stalker gave to someone, it wasn’t the look a victim gave to the person that had just stabbed her with two knives, it was the look of love and appeal, a look of family. Ryoka really hopes that the lady survive, she had been dumb to go to Damien after discovering the stalker, she should have made the investigation by herself first, but then she had been scared, now though, seeing as such a thing might happen again, she was in no way going to make that mistake again. Of course she could just be imagining everything, it might be that the lady stalker was just shocked and that was why she had that look or it could even be that it was Ryoka that was imagining the whole thing. Ryoka huffed again, “You said Diamond-backs were rare, that two I have seen out of three full dragons I have seen” she said giving voice to her thoughts, she hope to somehow get a sort of truth or at least closure from Damien. “That is to show you how WIC will spare no expense just to get a hold of you, they are sending their very best after you” Damien replied after a pause. He was lying, Ryoka did not know what exactly he was lying about, or how she even knew he was lying, she only just knew at that point that he was lying. ‘No truth or closure from there then' She thought to herself and fell silent again, hoping and praying even that the lady stalker dragon make it and stay alive. She looked up at the early morning sky through the window to her side, wishing she could catch a glimpse of the dragon, she then looked at the side mirror as well hoping to catch a glimpse of the cloaked and hooded human figure, but on both accounts, all was clear. She resigned and then closed her eyes while placing her head on the window, sleep came to her right then as easy as breeze blowing leaves and this time, for the first time in a while, her dreams were different. She dreamt of dragons quite alright, a dark grey and black dragon and a pure white dragon, they played about, chasing each other and play-fighting each other, there was obvious love between these two dragons and much of it was seen in their rhythmical and synchronized movements in the air. The dragons landed and turned into beautiful girls, one with dark flowing hair and the other with pure white hair, they were giggling and laughing at a joke only both of them shared, they held hands and then still chased each other about in their human form. The image shifted and showed the two girls now turned ladies, this time they were training, hand to hand combat, then they switched to using staffs then the shifted and fought as dragons in the air. Then they landed back on the ground but the white dragon was on top of the grey and black dragon, pinning her down, they shifted to human right then and the white haired lady who had the upper hand even while they battled as human was on top of the lady with the dark hair. “You always beat me, go easy on me next time” the dark haired lady said to the other white haired lady who only laughed at the words of her partner. “You always tell me to go easy on you next time, every time we duel and I win, I’m afraid if I go easier any more then that means I wouldn’t have to lift a finger when we fight so you can win” the white haired lady said with humor at which the other lady laughed as well. “Well, it is only fitting for the next queen of Eldross to be unmatched in all forms of combat” the dark haired lady said. “I don’t know about being unmatched, I only know I can beat you anytime, any day, anyhow, anywhere, for any reason” the white haired lady said. “True, which still makes me second best, seeing as I am also unmatched if not for you, I mean it is well known that no one can take me except for you, which is why if I am going to go in a gruesome and unthought-of way, I would love it if it was by your hands, no one else must have the pleasure of killing me, just you” the dark lady said. The image shifted and this time it was a gruesome battle, a ruthless fight between dragons was going on, the floor was littered with dragon parts; torn wings and torn limbs, some bright blue, some dull blue. But there were still two dragons fighting and giving it their all, a dark grey and black dragon ad a pure white dragon, they were bleeding and suffering from wounds in multiple places already, but the battle still raged on. “Why are you going easy on me?” the dark grey and black dragon asked the pure white dragon using mind speak (a feature that lets dragons speak using speech into each other’s minds) “I am not, I am just tired” the white dragon replied in the same manner, but while it was true that she was tired, it was not true that she wasn’t going easy on the other dragon. “We both know that is not true, and we both know this ends only when one of us is dead, I only have one request, when you are done with me, if you make it past them and get out of here, do take care of my child, don’t let him be alone in this world” the dark grey and black dragon said knowing that it was she who was not going to leave there alive. The white dragon could not reply with speech as she was choked up with tears, but she nodded at her lifelong, cousin and best friend after which they clashed once again resuming the deathly battle. Ryoka woke up with a start as both dragons fell back to the earth in the dream, the dream though hadn’t really seemed like a dream, it felt all too real, and Ryoka felt it had to be someone else’s memories, someone she is connected to, the same way she is connected to Mother, only this seemed more direct. “You need to attain your shift and fast, else we will have to keep running like this the longer it takes, and don’t forget that moving around so much will only make it more difficult for your father to find us” Damien said to her as he kept driving towards another part of Japan. Ryoka settled back in her seat and thought about this, it is true that while in dragon form things would be easier, even transport and facing one foe wouldn’t be an issue since she would have Damien to help as well. ‘Now, what do I do? how do I attain the shift?' she thought to herself and rested her head back on the window.
