Chapter Four

Emery's POV "Oh nothing, Emery was just telling me about her friend who's getting married for money," I abruptly looked over at my mother, shocked at how quickly she'd come up with that lie. "I see, youths are quite interesting these days," he said and I looked over at him. Our eyes locked for a second but I quickly averted my gaze. "Indeed my love," my mother said to him. "How are you today?" He said, kissing my mom on her lips. "Good honey. How are you? didn't see you in bed this morning," my mother said, sitting back down. "I went to the training ground a bit early, I needed to work out,” He answered as he took a seat beside her. "Hmm, that explains why you look so hot," she said and kissed him again, grabbing his biceps as she did. I winced at the action and tried not to stare at them. "Hey, Emery," Silas strolled into the dining room. He grinned and I gave him a little wave and mouthed "Hey. Silas had almost caught me and the Alpha yesterday; it was such a close one. I watched as Silas and the Alpha spoke about pack affairs and I soon discovered that he was the beta of the pack which was weird because he was so young. He couldn't be older than twenty-one years old. "You are the Beta?" I asked "Yeah, surprising right?" He chuckled, "I also happen to be his nephew," "Yeah, I knew that," I said. I watched as my mother and stepfather talked about everything, my mother being overly sweet and overly touchy with him like she'd not just told me that he was nothing more than a business to her. Meanwhile, Alpha Logan seemed to love her. He listened attentively to her and whenever our eyes locked, he gave me an icy glare that chilled my bones and made me realize how much he didn't want me. "I'm sorry, my uncle is a bit of a talkative," Silas whispered in my ear and I couldn't help but smile. "There are a few constructions we need to look into very soon by the way," Alpha Logan said to my mother. "Yes, yes. The orphanage being one of them, I remember." My mother said, I couldn't help but glare at her. Was she just acting with him? Was this a pretense game? I didn't want to believe it but her words continued to echo in my mind. 'Alpha Logan is just business.' Words I never thought would ever come out of my mother's mouth. "I should get going," Alpha Logan suddenly stood up. "Alright honey, love you." She waved at him and Silas followed suit. "What?" My mother's smile faded when she saw the dirty look I was giving her. "You don't love him, do you?" I asked, hoping desperately that she would just say she'd only been kidding. "Not this again…." She rolled her eyes at me, "Just enjoy what your mother has worked hard for, and stop being a killjoy," She glared at me. "A killjoy?" I scoffed, "I'm not the one lying to a man who loves you mom,” "Why do you care so much?" She got angry. Because he's my mate! He’s freakingbmy mate and you are hurting him. I wanted to say but instead, I kept my mouth shut. "You are right, I shouldn't. I just thought after ten years since Dad's passing, you were finally in love again but I guess I was wrong, "I spat. "Your father was not the saint you think he was," my mother said quietly, and for the first time in my life, I wanted to punch her in the face. Unable to take it anymore, I got up from my seat and walked out of the dining ignoring my mother as she called me over and over again. I needed to take a walk and breathe and think, and that's what I did. I left the pack house. I was still finding it difficult to believe the words of my mother. How could she say she didn't love a man like Alpha Logan? He was every woman's dream. An angel on earth. In a different circumstance, I'd accept him as my mate but I couldn't here. Not while he was married to my mother. Not when he loved her and despised me. Here I was going crazy with guilt when the person I felt like I had betrayed didn't even care. I couldn't help but start laughing at the ridiculousness of the situation. Not only did I have a boyfriend that I loved dearly, my mother's husband was my mate and then my mother didn't even love him. The moon goddess was messing with me, I was sure of it. After an hour of walking, I realized that I was lost. I had wanted to take a small stroll but I had somehow ended up in the middle of nowhere in the woods too. The more I tried to get out of the woods, the deeper I went. I had been so deep in thought that I had just taken a quiet path and now I was lost. As I walked through the eerily quiet woods, trying to find my way, I stopped suddenly when I heard a shallow growl coming from somewhere. I listened for any sudden movement but it didn't come. I let out a sigh of relief. Maybe it was just my imagination. 'I don't think so Emery, we are being followed,' my wolf chose the time to scare me. I didn't even have time to fully process her word when something jumped off of the tree and landed behind me. A bloodcurdling scream came out of my mouth as I turned around to find a rogue with half his face gone snarling at me. "You don't have to scream, I'm going to make it quick," the faceless man said and swung his claws to hit me. "No!" I yelled
