Prologue
The Summer She Left Paraty, Brazil Four Years Earlier The town looked like it had been painted in gold. The sun was beginning to sink behind the mountains, casting warm light across the cobblestone streets and the calm ocean beyond them. Music drifted from open windows. Tourists laughed in the distance. The scent of salt water and blooming flowers filled the air. It was the kind of evening Sofia Almeida wished she could freeze forever. Yet all she could think about was tomorrow. Tomorrow she would leave. Tomorrow she would board a bus to São Paulo and begin the life she had spent years dreaming about. Tomorrow everything would change. Sofia sat at the edge of the old wooden pier, her bare feet dangling above the water. The ocean rippled beneath her as the sky transformed from gold to shades of pink and orange. She tried to memorize every detail. The sound of waves. The distant boats. The familiar skyline of her hometown. Because a part of her feared that once she left, she might never belong here again. "You've been staring at the ocean for twenty minutes." A familiar voice made her smile. She didn't need to turn around to know who it was. Gabriel Costa. He walked onto the pier carrying two cans of guaraná and sat beside her. "Maybe I'm saying goodbye," Sofia replied quietly. Gabriel handed her a drink. "You make it sound like you're leaving forever." "Aren't I?" He frowned. "No." Sofia looked at him. The golden light illuminated his face. His dark hair was messy from the sea breeze. His green eyes reflected the sunset. For a moment, she wondered if leaving would be easier if she didn't love him so much. The thought hurt. A lot. They had been together for almost two years. Two years of beach dates. Late-night phone calls. Summer festivals. Stolen kisses. Future plans. At sixteen, they had believed they would stay together forever. At eighteen, forever suddenly felt complicated. Because dreams had entered the picture. And dreams demanded sacrifices. Sofia had always wanted more than Paraty. Not because she hated the town. Quite the opposite. She loved it. But she also loved music. Ever since she was a child, she had imagined herself standing beneath bright stage lights with thousands of people singing her songs back to her. She wanted that life. Needed it. And opportunities like the one waiting in São Paulo didn't come twice. Gabriel knew that. Yet neither of them knew how to survive the distance. "You still have time to change your mind," Gabriel said softly. Sofia laughed. "You sound like my mother." "Your mother is smart." "My mother cried while packing my suitcase." "Smart and emotional." She nudged his shoulder. He smiled. But the smile didn't quite reach his eyes. That was the problem lately. Every conversation ended with sadness. Every goodbye felt heavier than the last. Every happy moment came with a countdown attached to it. One day left. Twelve hours left. One last sunset. One last night. One last everything. Sofia hated it. "I don't want us to fight," she whispered. Gabriel looked confused. "We're not fighting." "It feels like we are." He sighed. "No, Sof." His voice was gentle. "We're just running out of time." The words settled between them. Heavy. Painful. True. For a while they sat in silence. The sky darkened. The first stars appeared. The ocean glowed beneath the moonlight. Finally Gabriel spoke. "What happens now?" Sofia swallowed. The question she'd been avoiding. The question nobody wanted to answer. She stared at the water. "I don't know." "You don't know?" "No." Gabriel laughed softly, though there was no humor in it. "That's comforting." "I'm being honest." "I know." Silence followed. The kind of silence that only exists when two people love each other and neither knows how to stop hurting the other. Sofia hated that silence. She wished she could promise him things. Promise she'd come back. Promise the distance wouldn't matter. Promise they'd survive. But promises felt dangerous. Because what if she couldn't keep them? What if São Paulo changed her? What if success changed her? What if she changed herself? "I don't want you to wait for me," she said suddenly. Gabriel froze. The words hung in the air. Sharp. Unexpected. Painful. "What?" Sofia looked down at her hands. "I mean it." "Sofia—" "I don't know what's going to happen." Her voice cracked. "I don't know how often I'll come home. I don't know if this music thing will work. I don't know if I'll be gone six months or six years." Gabriel stared at her. His expression unreadable. "So that's it?" "No." "Then what is it?" She wanted to explain. Wanted him to understand. But emotions tangled inside her chest. "I love you." The confession came out broken. Almost desperate. Gabriel's eyes softened. Sofia continued. "I love you enough that I don't want you putting your life on hold for me." For a moment, neither moved. Then Gabriel looked away toward the ocean. The muscles in his jaw tightened. And Sofia immediately regretted everything. Because she could see the hurt in his eyes. The disappointment. The heartbreak. The realization that she was already leaving. Not tomorrow. Not next week. Now. Tonight. Part of her had already begun walking away. "You think I can't make that decision myself?" he asked quietly. "That's not what I meant." "Then what did you mean?" She struggled for words. For explanations. For anything that would make this easier. Nothing came. Because the truth was simple. She was scared. Scared of failing. Scared of losing him. Scared of choosing one future and regretting the other forever. Gabriel stood. Sofia's heart immediately dropped. He rarely walked away from difficult conversations. But tonight felt different. Tonight everything felt fragile. "Gabriel—" He turned back toward her. Moonlight reflected in his eyes. Eyes she'd spent two years memorizing. Eyes she might not see again for months. Maybe longer. "You know what hurts the most?" he asked. She shook her head. "You already sound like you're gone." The words shattered something inside her. Before she could respond, Gabriel stepped closer. Close enough that she could hear his breathing. Close enough that she could see the sadness he was trying to hide. "I never asked you to stay." His voice was steady. "I never asked you to give up your dream." "I know." "But somewhere along the way, you decided you had to choose between me and your future." A tear slipped down Sofia's cheek. Because he was right. She had been acting like love and ambition couldn't coexist. Like she had to sacrifice one for the other. Maybe because that felt easier than risking both. Gabriel reached up and gently wiped away her tear. The gesture nearly broke her. "I want you to go," he whispered. She blinked. "What?" "I want you to chase your dream." Another tear fell. Gabriel smiled sadly. "I always will." Sofia's chest tightened. The love she felt for him became almost unbearable. Because this was who Gabriel was. Someone who loved without conditions. Without ultimatums. Without making her choose. And somehow that made leaving even harder. "What if I fail?" she whispered. He laughed softly. "Then you'll come home." "And if I succeed?" His smile faded. But he answered anyway. "Then I'll be proud of you." The honesty nearly destroyed her. Sofia stood quickly. Before she could think. Before fear could stop her. She wrapped her arms around him. Gabriel held her immediately. As if he had been waiting. As if he never wanted to let go. The ocean crashed softly around them. The world continued spinning. But on that pier, time seemed to stop. For a long moment, they simply stood there. Holding each other. Memorizing each other. Trying to prepare for a goodbye neither was ready for. Eventually Sofia pulled back. Their eyes met. And suddenly every memory flashed through her mind. Their first kiss. Their first date. Their first "I love you." All the ordinary moments that had become extraordinary because they shared them together. "I'll miss you," she whispered. Gabriel smiled sadly. "I know." Then he kissed her. Slowly. Tenderly. Like he was trying to memorize the feeling. Like he knew this might be the last time. The kiss tasted like salt air and heartbreak. Like summer. Like goodbye. When they finally separated, neither spoke. There was nothing left to say. Some endings didn't need words. Only acceptance. Only time. Only distance. The next morning, Sofia would leave Paraty. She would chase her dream. She would build a new life. She would spend years convincing herself she had made the right choice. But standing on that pier beneath the stars, neither she nor Gabriel knew something important. Some love stories don't end when people walk away. Some simply pause. Waiting patiently. For the season that brings them back. And four summers later, Sofia Almeida would return home. Only to discover that the boy she left behind had never truly left her heart. And that some promises don't need words to survive. They only need time.
