Thorne and I parted at the edge of the Darkwood. The dome of the night sky was sprinkled with stars, and the single moon of the mortal world rode low, a crescent sailing behind the turrets of Castle Raine.
“I’ll come back as soon as I can,” he said, holding me tightly in his arms.
“I know.” I brushed my lips against his. “Travel safely. And don’t let your liege bring too many guards with him.”
I knew Thorne’s power was strong enough to transport him into Elfhame and return the same way with the Nightshade Lord. But the fewer people he had to carry between the worlds, the better.
“It will likely be just his two guards accompanying him,” Thorne said. “Lord Mornithalarion understands the cost to my wellspring. He’ll do what he can to help.”
