CHAPTER ONE (THE UNDERDOG)
“Father, if you have called me here to talk me out of my decision, then you’re wasting your time. I will find a way to cross the borders and there is nothing that either of you can do to stop me.” Prince Williams said with an unruly look.
“Williams! Don’t talk to your father like that. Please have a sit; we can resolve this calmly.” Queen Emily said, sounding very irked.
He slowly turned to her and with a fierce look. “No!! I have spent my whole life talking to you both about this but not anymore; I’m taking matters into my own hands!!” He Thundered and headed for the door.
Her eyes immediately found her husband who was already rumbling like an active volcano. “Charles, calm down, dear. Don’t do anything that you’ll regret, we already have a hand full as it stands.”
Ignoring her plea, Alpha Charles jumped on his feet with the speed of a lightning bolt. “Don’t you dare walk out on me, boy!”
Irritated by his father’s voice, the prince came to a sudden halt and turned around very slowly. “How can I help you, your majesty?” He asked with an undiluted derision.
“When I summon you, you don’t get to leave until I say so, or would you rather i remind you of the protocols of standing before the Alpha?” Alpha Charles asked with a murderous look, his fist tightened with every word that escaped his lips.
The prince released a deep sigh of frustration. “There is nothing to talk about. You were obviously wasting my time, so I decided to excuse myself. Moreover, I am not one of your subjects that you can order around as you please, Alpha Charles.”
“Don’t dare me boy, I can be very cruel. You will come back here, at once!” Alpha Charles roared.
“I’m afraid that’s not going to happen. What is there to talk about? The fact that you have chosen the path of cowardice and weakness, like the Kings before you?”He replied.
“Like I said earlier; you will not speak to me about this, anymore and you will also never speak to me with this tone, ever!!” The Alpha thundered.
“And why wouldn’t I? You’re the Alpha, but here you are acting like one of them cowardly Lycans. It’s high time you stop hiding like a fraidy-cat.” The Prince said with ocean of audacity.
Alpha Charles took a few subtle steps. “And what do you know about being the Alpha. How dare you tell me how to rule my Kingdom? I’ve been the Alpha longer than you’ve been alive, so when I say no, I mean no.”
“What are you even saying?? For crying out loud, we are the mighty Lycans!! The legendary Riverdaleans, the very sound of our name is enough to send shivers down the spine of our enemies; at least that’s what you told me. You raised me to be a Lion and now here you are telling me to live like a cowardly lamb. I will go on with my plan and you will stay out of my way.” The Prince thundered and stormed out of the room.
“Williams! I’m still talking to you; don’t you dare walk out on me!!” Alpha Charles yelled.
Queen Emily knew that something dangerous was about to go down, so she reached for her husband’s arm with much haste. “Charles dear, please calm down, you don’t have to do this. He’s just a chi_” She said with a cagey tone.
“Don’t you dare tell me that he is a child!” He thundered. At this point he didn’t utter a word, he just continued to rumble with rage, and before she knew what was happening, he shape shifted into his wolf form and ran towards the door.“No Charles! Don’t do this.”
Without thinking twice she also took her wolf form and raced after him. Luckily, she was able to out run him.“No Charles! I will not let you do this.” She said, her paws, locked firmly to the ground.
“I’ll say this only once, get out of my way, woman!” He roared.
“No!! If you want to harm my son, you might as well harm too.” She said, audaciously. At this point he just stood and stared at her rage. “Woman, I said mov_”
“No Charles! No!” She interrupted. “Are you going to kill him like you killed his brother?”
On hearing this he turned to her with a vicious look, but his countenance began to dissolve slowly. “Are you really going to bring that up now, how can you even say such a think?”
“I chose to forgive you after so many years, but I will not allow you to take another son from me.” She said, looking him right in the eye.
“You know that it was a mistake and you know that I do not like to be reminded of the incident and yet you chose to bring it up. Anyway, what I do know is that I am no murderer.” He said, sounding more anxious than annoyed.
She took a few steps closer, still looking him right in the eyes. “I don’t care about who you are or what you are, however, I do know that; if you ever lay a finger on any of my children you’ll have me to deal with.”
Then he also took a few steps closer, he seemed less confident. “Is that a threat, woman? And what do you know about being a mother? You are raising a tyrant instead of a King.”
“Yes, he’s a tyrant. So what have you done to make this tyrant a better person? You’re his father after all.” She said wearing a look of disgust and intense resentment.
“Oh, so now you’re playing the blame game. Know this, you are the reason our son is so rebellious and unhinged, and you best put him on a short leash or I will be forced to treat him like the beast that he is. Oh, and one last thing; you have failed as a mother and you don’t deserve to be called one. Now get out of my way!!” He thundered and stormed out.
His words pierced right through her soul, but this was no time to sit and sob. She knew that the prince was a verge of making a rash decision so she went in search of him without thinking twice.
Just as she predicted, she found him sulking alone in the garden of black roses, on the eastern side of the royal fortress. “Hello son, may I sit with you.” She said with warm smile.
Irritated by her voice, He lifted his head slowly, with a ferocious look. “I do not want to talk to you or anyone else, so please let me be.”
Determined to talk, she took a step closer. “Son, I know that you are upset with your father but I need you to understand that he is only trying to protect you, he loves you so very dearly and wants only the best for you. I beg of you; leave this battle alone, its way older than you and its way deeper than you can grasp.”
“Love me? Mother, you dare say to my face that my father loves me. Love is fearless and bold; my father on the other hand is the exact opposite. If you’ve come here to tell me more lies, then I suggest that you leave, immediately!” He roared.
“I’m sorry Son, but I need you to understand that your father has decided to cling to what you call cowardice because he is scared of losing his family and not just because he is afraid of the other kingdoms. Moreover, he has an obligation to protect the Clans that make up this Kingdom. I suggest that you listen to him.” She said with an unforthcoming look.
“Scared of what exactly mother? Father is the greatest Lycan of his time and I am the strongest, fiercest and fastest warrior in the ranks of the Riverdale army so again I ask mother, what exactly is father scared of?” He erupted.
“I know that you are a Prince, from the line of our finest warriors, but the battle for our place in the council of Kings is not one that can be won with brute strength but with subtlety and wisdom. Believe me you; our predecessors have tried again and again to fight the other Kingdoms on the basis of their strength, but they lost woefully, every single time. Now tell me son; what makes you think you’ll be any different from your ancestors?” She asked.
“Mother, you keep speaking in parables. There is so much that you and father have kept from me. I have been training my whole life to fight an enemy that I know nothing about. The older generation has kept the younger one in the dark regarding the very truths that we are supposed to represent, and every time a question is asked, it is responded to with rebuke and disdain. Mother, if you love me as much as you claim to, you will tell me everything that I need to know.” He said, at the verge of spilling a tear.
Seizing the moment, she slowly maneuvered her way into sitting right next to him. “Yes son, you are absolutely right. The very foundation of this kingdom was established on the grounds of very deep secrets and the very walls that surround us have been built on mysteries. But I do not have the answer to your questions. What you have requested is a very hard thing but I will speak to your father on your behalf, it's high time you knew the truth. But, I will need a little time to convince him.”
“Mother, the King is very stubborn, there is no chance that he will succumb to your demands.” The prince replied, without any hope.
“Like I said, all I need from you is a little time; so can you do that for me?” She asked with a warm smile.
“Alright mother, I will give you all the time that you need but if and when I run out of patience, I will act on what I have in mind. Do we have a deal??” He asked sternly.
“Yes we do son.” She replied. Then she placed her hand gently on his right shoulder. “One more thing.”
He looked at her hesitantly. “I’m all ears.” “A King, who runs his government on the grounds of rage and bitterness, is like a cistern with a broken wheel. He may have the potential of becoming a great leader but the rage within will hinder him from harnessing it. Now promise me that you won’t make any rash decisions while I’m convincing your father.” She begged him with wet eyes.
“I promise.” He replied reluctantly.
“Thank you Son, I’ll be taking me leave now. Think of everything I told you.” She said and walked out.
