Chapter 1
"Why?" Alix stared blankly at Dan. He raked his fingers through his hair, clicking his tongue, "I don't know, I just got tired," he met her gaze, "you know?" Alix had her feet glued to the ground. It wasn't enough that he was breaking up with her on their third anniversary, but he had no reason to? She nodded, the tears pooling in her eyes, "after three years?" "It's nothing, you're just boring and-" "And I get it," she clutched her bag tight, turning to take her leave, not even trying to hide her trembling hands as she walked away from his condo. She held her breath. Surely, he was coming behind her to say something, to stop her from leaving. Her eyes widened in shock when she instead heard the door slam shut behind her. Dan really was letting her go. She looked over her shoulder one more time before letting the tears stream down her cheeks. *** “I'm so glad you decided to make time to celebrate our second anniversary, I love you so much babe.” Cherry McLarn said, reaching for Triston's hand that wasn't holding the wheel. He let out a small smile, loving when she acted possessive of him. His eyes flickered her way, taking in her gorgeous face, and hair that was put up in a bun, her sparkly red dress looking like a dream. He loved her a lot and never wanted that to change. “Of course, you're my life, you're my all.” He lifted the back of her hand to his lips, then turned to stare into those blue eyes of hers. One thing was for sure, he'd never get tired of those perfect eyes. When he looked back at the road, he was startled to see a figure heading towards the car. With as much speed as he could, his feet hit the brakes and came to an abrupt halt, a few inches from hitting the startled woman. "Oh my God," Cherry put her hand over her mouth. "s**t," Triston unbuckled his seat belt, heading out of the car, without peeling his gaze from the woman who had her hand pressed over her chest. Cherry immediately followed after him. "Are you okay?" He reached to touch the woman's arm but she took a step back before he could even touch her. She shot him a death glare. “Can't you watch where you're driving?!” “Listen, I apolo—” “You almost hit me!” She said it like he wasn't aware of that fact. “I know and I apologize, but—” She ran a hand through her straight black shoulder length hair. “Why is this world being cruel to me?” “Hey,” Cherry started, drawing her attention, “uh, what's your name? We'll send you some money to cover up whatever damage we caused.” She stared at Cherry like she just said the dumbest thing then returned her gaze to Triston, craning her head to meet his gaze, as he easily towered over her. She muttered something under her breath, before walking past them. He stared at the direction she went. “Talk about being weird.” Cherry huffed, then went back to the car. “Come on babe, don't let her ruin your mood.” “Hmm.” The last thing he wanted was a girl ruining their day, so he went back to the car. He started the car, the engine roared and the car came to life. *** The restaurant was beautiful (as expected since it cost thousands of dollars to book a reservation). “Thanks a lot babe for this. I love you.” Cherry said, sitting across from him. He smiled at her. This was the life. Her brows pulled together in something he assumed to be worry as she stared over his shoulder. “Is something wrong?” He asked and her gaze immediately shifted to him as her expression changed immediately, a smile spread on her face. She shook her head. “I'm just excited about all this.” But he wasn't convinced, neither did he want to pester more on it. Instead, he turned to the direction she was staring at, and although he wasn't certain, he felt like he saw a figure of his cousin, Ray. Ray Anderson was twenty-eight years of age, a year older than Triston, and they were both not on good terms. They hadn't spoken for years since Triston became the CEO to the company both parents worked hard to build. So it didn't make sense for Ray to be at the restaurant. Triston checked again to see if he was mistaken, and maybe he was because the figure was gone already. He decided to focus on Cherry as they both chatted for a while about their times together. Still, he couldn't help but notice how off Cherry was acting though she tried to cover it by acting extra merry. “Uh, can you excuse me while I go use the bathroom?” She asked with a smile too wide to be true. He nodded, still having an uneasy feeling with her change in behavior. She rose to her feet, smoothing her dress, then left his sight. He waited for about five minutes and when she hadn't come back, worry swept past him. She'd acted strange before leaving, now she was nowhere to be found. He decided to call her, then realized she'd forgotten to take her phone which only made him more nervous. He stood up and decided to head to the direction of the bathroom. Maybe he could wait for her by the entrance. Which was what he did, but soon stopped short when he heard moaning sounds coming from the corner. Why on earth would anyone be disgusting enough to do their s**t by the entrance where they could be sighted by anyone. With an eye roll, he continued walking. His plan was to look at the couple with disgust and walk past them. But that plan left his mind when he sighted the couple. Wait, what? What was he seeing? Why was Cherry kissing Ray? Fury and hurt flowed through his blood, dominated by hurt. How could Cherry do this? Aware of someone's presence, they broke from the kiss to stare at who their company was. And as soon as they sighted him, Cherry's eyes widened as she pulled apart from Ray, but Ray's lips pulled to a smirk. The anger in him told him to pound on Ray, but he was aware if he did that, he'd cause a scene. He stared at Cherry with much anger and hurt, then left their presence, ignoring the fact she was scurrying behind him and screaming his name. He left the restaurant and to his car where he zoomed off, driving past her as fast as he could. How could she have done this? Why would she cheat on him? And with his worst enemy at that? How dare she ruin two years relationship? And end up with his cousin. He felt the anger blurring his vision as he squeezed his eyes shut so he could make sense of the situation. Cherry had kissed Ray. Why? How long had they been together behind his back? Did she even love him? Was she just using him for his money? No matter how he thought about it, he was getting more questions than answers so he decided he'd give it more thought when he got back home. He opened his eyes, unsure why it was closed in the first place. Immediately, the sight of two trucks heading in the opposite direction he was heading, came to view. What?! His heart began hammering in his chest as he turned the car to avoid being hit by the first truck. Unfortunately, that action caused him to crash into the second truck which had fortunately come to a halt so his car was saved from being pushed forward. He felt something pierce into his leg, but couldn't process how much pain that was emitting from the leg as darkness followed. *** The sounds of beeping filled his earring and he tried to process what was happening. Where was he? He could hear muffled noises but couldn't process the words. But he could hear his mom, Alison's voice and she sounded— dejected. What was happening? He opened his eyes, greeted by white lights then turned to see his mom standing in front of a doctor. He tried to move but was greeted by a sharp pain on his leg. Soon, the words were becoming clear to him. “What do you mean by he'll be crippled?” Alison asked in a teary tone. “I apologize, Mrs Anderson, but there's a possibility for him to be crippled temporarily, or possibly permanently.” The doctor said in a professional tone. Wait wait wait. They were talking about him, that he knew. But what did they mean by him being crippled? He had become crippled?!
