BRYONY POURED HERSELF another cup of coffee, although she knew she had already drunk too much. She sat again at the table where she’d spread her ledgers and sighed. She hated that work, but she couldn’t pay anyone to do it for her. That morning’s tension still clung onto her. She was also upset with herself because she hadn’t been nicer to her older neighbour. Besides, the thought that she had been about to do something irreparable that morning nudged at her. She’d almost given in to McNamara and she’d never done that with another man before. She didn’t know what to think of her reactions. Her thoughts were unsettling but something startled her. She listened carefully — someone was trying to pry open the door at the back of the house. A cold shiver ran up her spine and her hands shook.
