CHAPTER 2: THE IMPOSSIBLE SCIENCE

1260 Words
The rainy street seemed to tilt beneath my feet. I gripped my phone so hard my knuckles turned ghostly white. The doctor’s words echoed through my head, drowning out the roar of passing city traffic. "What... what did you just say?" I asked, my voice barely audible over the pouring rain. "Miss Bennett, please return to the clinic immediately," Dr. Aris urged over the line. "This is a medical impossibility under normal circumstances. We need to run a secondary scan to verify these shocking results." "I am on my way," I whispered. I lowered the phone and stood frozen on the wet sidewalk. Twins. Two babies growing inside my belly. And two different fathers. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird as the memories of six weeks ago flashed through my mind. Friday night... the stormy hours in Alexander's luxury penthouse suite after an eighteen-hour workday. Saturday night... the dimly lit VIP booth at the downtown club, where a man with Alexander's exact face, voice, and scent had pulled me into his arms. I had assumed it was Alexander both times. I thought he was playing some sick, cruel emotional game with me. My mind reeled as I hailed a yellow taxi, sliding into the back seat while shivering uncontrollably. "Central Maternity Clinic, please," I told the driver, wiping wet strands of hair from my burning cheeks. "And please hurry." As the taxi navigated through the heavy city traffic, I rubbed my lower belly with trembling fingers. If the man at the club was not Alexander... then who was he? And why did he look like an exact clone of my ruthless boss? Thirty minutes later, I pushed through the glass doors of Central Maternity Clinic. Warm air greeted me, smelling strongly of rubbing alcohol and fresh lavender. I walked up to the reception desk, my shoes squeaking loudly against the polished tile floor. "I am Chloe Bennett," I told the nurse on duty. "Dr. Aris called me." The nurse nodded quickly, her eyes wide with immense curiosity. "Follow me, Miss Bennett. The doctor is waiting in exam room three." I followed her down the quiet hallway, my chest tight with suffocating anxiety. When we stepped into the exam room, Dr. Aris was sitting behind a large desk, staring intently at a glowing computer screen. A tall, gray-haired man in a white lab coat sat beside him. "Thank you for coming back so quickly, Chloe," Dr. Aris said, standing up to pull out a chair for me. "Please, Doctor," I begged, taking a seat and clutching my wet handbag against my knees. "Tell me what is going on. How can twins have two different fathers?" Dr. Aris exchanged a serious look with his senior colleague before turning back to face me. "It is a extremely rare phenomenon called superfecundation," Dr. Aris explained gently. "It happens when two separate eggs are released during a single ovulation cycle and fertilized by two different men during separate acts of i*********e within a short timeframe." My breath hitched in my throat. "So... it is medically real?" I whispered, my voice trembling. "Yes," the senior doctor chimed in, leaning forward over the mahogany desk. "Our preliminary genetic marker screening from your bloodwork confirms two distinct paternal strands in your fetal DNA." He tapped a printed paper report resting on the desk. "Baby A shares genetic markers with one father. Baby B shares markers with an entirely different father." I fell back against the padded chair, my head spinning in utter confusion. Friday night... Alexander. Saturday night... the mysterious stranger at the club. A hot tear slipped down my pale cheek as the horrifying truth settled into my chest. I had given my body to two different men within twenty-four hours without even realizing it because they looked identical. "Chloe, we need to know," Dr. Aris said softly. "Are you in a position to identify both potential fathers? The legal and medical implications for this pregnancy are huge." "I..." I started, swallowing the thick lump in my throat. "I thought they were the same man." Before Dr. Aris could reply, the heavy wooden door of the exam room burst open. The sudden, violent intrusion made all three of us jump in shock. Standing in the doorway was a tall man clad in a tailored black trench coat. Raindrops glistened on his broad shoulders and dark, styled hair. My heart stopped in my chest. Alexander Sterling. He stepped into the quiet room, his dark blue eyes sweeping over the space before fixing onto me like a predator locking onto its prey. "What is the meaning of this?" Alexander demanded, his deep voice slicing through the quiet room like a razor. Two burly security guards in dark suits stood directly behind him in the corridor. I scrambled up from my chair, my fists clenching at my sides. "What are you doing here, Mr. Sterling? I resigned. You threw me out of your office." Alexander sneered, taking two slow, authoritative steps toward me. "My security team tracks all company devices," Alexander said coldly, waving a slender black tablet in his hand. "Your work phone was pinging this private clinic continuously." He glanced at the two doctors, his gaze sharp enough to draw blood. "My legal advisor warned me that desperate women often fake medical records to build extortion cases against billionaires." "I am not faking anything!" I yelled, my eyes blazing with furious tears. "Get out of here!" "Silence," Alexander barked, dismissing my words with a wave of his hand. He turned to Dr. Aris, pulling a thick silver pen from his coat pocket. "I am Alexander Sterling. Name your price to hand over her medical file and sign an affidavit stating this pregnancy has nothing to do with me." Dr. Aris stood up straight, his face flushed with indignation. "Mr. Sterling, this is a private medical consultation! You cannot simply march in here and demand confidential records!" "I can and I will," Alexander replied with icy arrogance. "I own forty percent of the medical board that funds this facility. Hand over the file." "No!" I shouted, stepping between Alexander and the doctor's desk. "You do not get to dictate my life anymore! You told me to leave, so leave me alone!" Alexander reached out and grabbed my wrist, his grip firm and unyielding. "You do not yell at me, Chloe," he growled, leaning down until his cold lips were inches from my ear. "If there is a child inside you that carries Sterling blood, you will not use it as a bargaining chip." "Let go of her," a deep, smooth voice echoed from the hallway. The voice was identical to Alexander's... yet richer, darker, and laced with dangerous power. Alexander froze instantly. His grip on my wrist loosened slightly. Slowly, Alexander turned his head toward the open doorway. A tall man stepped out from the shadows of the corridor, casually shoving past Alexander's security guards. He wore a dark leather jacket, his dark hair was slightly messy, and a silver ring glinted on his thumb. But his face... his eyes, his nose, his jawline... were an exact carbon copy of Alexander Sterling. My jaw dropped. My knees went completely weak. The stranger smiled smoothly, his intense eyes locking directly onto mine with a warmth that sent shivers down my spine. "Long time no see, brother," the man said softly, stepping into the room. He looked at me, his eyes softening with deep recognition. "And hello again, beautiful. I believe that second baby belongs to me."
