Chapter 1 A Compensation of Twenty Million
"Noah. Come on. Wake up!"
Some pushing woke up Noah. To be precise, he was woken up by a start. He opened his eyes and found himself lying on the hospital bed with bandages on his hands.
"Hey! Wake up!"
The woman's voice was high-pitched and sharp, with a kind of arrogance.
He raised his head and looked at the woman in front of him. She wore a white nurse skirt, a pink shirt with a collar visible, and a white pantyhose.
"Hey. You've been lying here for a whole day and haven't paid any medical expenses. This is a hospital, not your home. You want to be a freeloader?"
"Hospital?"
"Was she talking to me?"
Noah looked down at his body, with bandages covered, in a daze. There were several stitched wounds. He got wounds all over his body and was having a vial.
After taking a closer look, Noah was completely awake.
He was Noah Lopez, a student who was about to graduate from a second-rate university in Southside.
He was born in a rural area and had a girlfriend in his junior year. To buy his girlfriend the newly launched iPhone before graduation, he had been working at a McDonald's near the school for the past two months.
But just last night, when he got off work from McDonald's and returned to the dormitory, he saw a little girl running towards the middle of the road because of playing around. At the same time, a van passed by. He didn't overthink and pushed the little girl directly. But he was hit by a van and got wounds on his body because he hit the greenbelt.
Noah felt lucky when he thought about that.
He thought he would die because the van was at high speed.
But he didn't expect to survive.
"Noah, I'm talking to you!"
The nurse slapped the table aggressively.
"Has the driver been found?" Noah raised his head and asked.
"What is the driver? We got you out of the garbage after receiving a stranger's call. But you'd better call your family and ask them to send over the medical expenses quickly. Otherwise, I will call the police and arrest you. Then you have to go to a cell instead of a ward!"
The nurse gestured to throw the bill in Noah's face when suddenly a man walked in, a man in a white coat.
"Who let you sit up? The plaster has not been removed. Don't move around!" Dr. Cooper looked at Noah dissatisfied. He was the chief physician of the inpatient department and must be responsible for every inpatient.
"Dr. Cooper. He's Noah Lopez, who was taken here last night and hadn't paid a penny for the medical expenses." The nurse reminded.
"Can't get in touch with his family yet?" Dr. Cooper frowned.
"His mobile phone has been broken. We couldn't contact his family. The phone of the person who called the hospital was also off. He only has a student card and has no other contacts." The nurse shook her head.
Dr. Cooper nodded and asked Noah, "Do you remember your family's contact information or anyone else's? You can use my mobile phone."
"How much is the medical bill?" Noah hesitated.
"The rescue fee plus the hospital treatment fee is 1, 960 dollars. You can pay by card or cash," The nurse said coldly.
"Well..."
Noah gasped.
One thousand nine hundred and sixty dollars!
It might not be a big deal for the rich.
It was just worth a meal, a dress, or a mobile phone.
But for his parents, who were farmers in the countryside, it would kill them!
He paid his tuition by working part-time during the holidays, and his father scrapped up in the village. Suddenly, he needed nearly 2, 000 dollars. He couldn't think about what would happen if he called them.
Right!
Noah hurriedly said to Dr. Cooper, "Can I borrow the phone? I've got one who to turn to for the medical costs."
He got paid yesterday and finally got the money to buy an iPhone for his girlfriend Eleanor Patel after over two months. He transferred the money to Eleanor when he got off work last night, which was 1, 380 dollars. Besides, Eleanor has kept his living expenses. It was enough to pay for the medical expenses.
Noah took the mobile phone from Dr. Cooper and quickly dialed the familiar phone number.
"Hello. Who is it?" A lazy female voice quickly came from the phone.
"This is Noah."
"Noah? When did you change your phone?" Eleanor was surprised.
"Forget that. Where are you? Can you send the money I transferred to you yesterday to Southside Hospital? I am now..."
"Wait a moment!"
Eleanor interrupted him and said, "What the hell are you talking about the money you transferred to me? I'm busy right now. Bye."
"You forgot? It's the money for buying your mobile phone. I just transferred it to you when I got off work last night. I'm in the hospital now and don't have money to pay medical bills. Can you send it over? I'll find a way to earn money to buy you one after I'm discharged from the hospital. Is that okay?"
Eleanor sneered.
Noah wondered why she suddenly sneered.
"Do you know what I'm going to do? I'm going out with my best friend to buy an iPhone! Do you want me to give you the money? Am I shameless? All my friends got iPhones. I have been patient enough for you, and now you want to ask for the money back? Let me tell you. You're a loser from the bones and destined to be worthless. Why did I fall in love with you blindly? You're a farmer forever. Don't contact me anymore!"
She hung up the phone harshly.
Noah sat on the hospital bed in a daze, his ears still buzzing.
That was it?
He dialed back the phone in disbelief but heard a piercing busy signal.
Holding the phone, Noah suddenly laughed softly.
Eleanor never asked why he was in the hospital.
She didn't care about why there was no news after the transfer last night.
Noah was nothing except he could buy her an iPhone.
He was a dispensable passerby in her eyes.
A simp would get nothing...
When the phone was roughly taken away, Noah raised his head in a daze.
"Stop the medicine. Then contact the school on his student card. Ask the school to come and pay for the medical expenses and take him away. Otherwise, call the police and send him the prison. Want to be a rogue? How did college students become like this!"
Then Dr. Cooper left the ward. The nurse pulled out the needle on the back of his hand, turned off the ECG on the table, threw the bill on Noah's face, and walked away.
Noah stood there in a daze without saying a word, with his eyes fixed on the numbers on the bill.
Over the years, Noah had heard and seen the news about many well-meaning people who had been brave enough to stand up for righteousness but ended up in miserable situations.
But he never thought it would happen to him.
One thousand nine hundred and sixty dollars...
Everyone was born as a human being. Others could treat friends to dinner and sing songs, but he had no way out!
For the first time, Noah felt life was so meaningless.
And if the hospital notified the school that one of their students was a rascal, the school would definitely expel him to save face.
The graduation certificate would fall through after him four years of hard work?
He wondered how his parents, who wanted him to honor the family after graduation, would react when they knew that.
And just as Noah was thinking about that, the ward door was suddenly knocked open.
Before Noah could react, he saw a graceful and luxurious lady pounce on him.
"My poor son. I finally found you..."
The noble lady rushed to Noah, crying non-stop.
Behind the noble lady stood a middle-aged man with an extraordinary bearing, with red eyes and trembling lips.
But in the end, he couldn't hold back the tears.
"Good to wake up. Good."
It could tell the man was not calm.
Noah was bewildered.
"What's going on?"
"Aren't my parents still farming in the village?"
"Who is this couple?"
"Why do they call me son?"
"Did they make a mistake?"
Seeing Noah's bewildered face, the middle-aged couple realized they might have frightened him.
"I'm really your biological mother. Really. We have a paternity test."
The noble lady seemed particularly excited and tried her best to prove she was Noah's biological mother. But the more she spoke, the more confused she became, making Noah more confused.
"Honey. I'll tell it."
Seeing his wife almost lose her mind, the middle-aged man began to talk.
The man was Mason Wilson, and the woman was Riley Wilson.
According to them, they had a son.
However, their son was abducted 19 years ago.
After many inquiries, they wanted to find him.
But they got nothing.
The couple thought they would never see their own son in this life.
Unexpectedly, Noah was hit by a car while saving the little girl. And he needed a blood transfusion due to excessive blood loss after being sent to the hospital.
After testing, Noah had a special rhnu11 blood type.
And there was only one bag of blood for this type in the Southside Blood Bank Center.
It was the blood Mason had donated a month ago!
After receiving the blood call from the hospital, the couple drove over immediately.
In the window at the door of the ward, they finally saw Noah.
Noah had the same rare blood type and age as their son.
It made Mason naturally think of his son, who was abducted when he was a child.
And Noah looked more like his son.
He did a paternity test with Noah.
The result showed Noah was really his abducted son.
That was what the whole thing was about.
After listening to Mason's explanation, Noah had a surprised expression.
"I know it sounds too coincidental, but we have already done two paternity tests. Why did we lie to you?"
Mason handed a document to Noah.
"Although we were in a rush, we did paternity tests. The results are exactly the same, and there is absolutely no mistake."
"If you don't believe me, I'll arrange a flight and go to the best medical research center in Germany. We'll let the most authoritative experts do another paternity test for us, as long as you can dispel your worries," Riley said anxiously.
Noah didn't know what to say when he saw the paternity test results.
Most importantly, Noah couldn't figure out anything about himself that was worth being deceived by others.
After all, he couldn't even get two thousand dollars, and the hospital still cornered him.
Could it be that the couple in front of him was really his biological parents?
When Noah was silent, Riley became anxious.
Compared with men, women were more emotional at this time.
She was afraid Noah would be angry and didn't recognize them.
"It's all our fault. It's all because we were so focused on business, making you abducted."
"From now on, we will compensate you and let you live a good life."
Riley spoke anxiously, looking at Noah expectantly.
She used the fastest means to investigate Noah's current family situation and knew he lived a poor life.
Looking at Riley, what appeared in Noah's mind were his foster parents.
They raised him for twenty years, honest farmers.
Thinking of their love, Noah suddenly felt a little irritable.
"So what? It's because you are my biological parents. You're here to want me to sever ties with my parents and recognize you?"
As soon as Noah said that, Riley's face turned pale.
She realized Noah had misunderstood her.
"We didn't mean that. Today, we just came to see you and transfer you to a better hospital. I also sent someone to pick you up from your adoptive parents. They'll arrive in Southside in two days. You can talk to their faces, all right?"
Mason looked deeply at Noah and hesitantly took a bank card from his pocket.
"There's 20 million in it. Please take it. Let me know if I need more. It's a little compensation for your grievances over the years."
