Emmeline found James playing with Julia’s old dolls. He’d lined them up and placed their clothes on his bed. When Emmeline stood in his doorway, he had his back to her and was holding a large blonde-haired doll by one foot. He’d opened its legs from the joints at the hips and was staring at the hole that let water run out of it when Julia used to ‘feed’ it with a bottle.
‘James.’ Emmeline spoke softly, knelt down beside him, took the doll away. ‘James, let’s make the dolly look like Julia now.’ She took a dress off the bed and put it on the doll. ‘There. That’s better.’ She looked at him. ‘James, would you like to go on a picnic with Julia? She’s going in a few minutes, with David and Sally. David asked if you’d like to go.’
