Chapter 1
Theo's POV
The air buzzed with anticipation, a low hum of excitement rippling through the crowd gathered in the sleek, open plaza at the heart of our pack’s urban territory.
Skyscrapers loomed in the distance, their glass facades glinting under the midday sun, a stark reminder that our world wasn’t some primal forest filled with howling wolves.
We were modern, civilized shifters who lived like humans, ate takeout, scrolled X on our phones, and drove overpriced cars.
The only thing setting us apart was the beast within, the ability to shift into a wolf at will. And today, that ability was about to define my future or ruin it.
I stood at the center of the ceremonial platform, my tailored suit crisp against my skin, my stance exuding the confidence expected of an Alpha-in-waiting.
The pack’s eyes were on me, their whispers a constant undercurrent. I could feel the weight of their expectations, their admiration.
I'm Theo Vance, the most powerful, most sought-after male in the Crescent Moon Pack. Handsome? That was an understatement. Women practically tripped over themselves for a glance, a wink, a fleeting moment of my attention.
And yet, here I was, about to be tethered to Snowflake Cole, the so-called mate chosen by the Moon Goddess herself. I scanned the crowd, my jaw tight. Her parents stood near the front, beaming like they’d won the lottery.
What right do they have to look so damn happy? I thought, my blood simmering. Their daughter, a nobody, a weakling by all accounts, was about to be paired with me? The nerve. I’d spent years building my reputation, proving my strength, my dominance.
And now, this? I’d heard the rumors about Snowflake timid, unremarkable, barely able to hold her own in a pack that valued power above all else. Last night, her best friend Agnes had slipped me some information out of distress that made my stomach churn.
If it was true, there was no way I’d let this mating happen.
The crowd parted slightly, and I caught sight of the women in the front row, their eyes raking over me like I was a prize to be won. Even on my mating day, they didn’t hold back flirtatious winks, coy smiles, fingers twirling hair. I smirked inwardly.
Being the pack’s heartthrob wasn’t easy, but I wore it like a crown. Tradition demanded I play the part of the respectful Alpha today, so I ignored their advances, keeping my gaze fixed on the elders seated on the raised dais.
Their stern faces reminded me of the weight of this moment. The mate bond wasn’t just a ceremony it was a sacred pact, one I wasn’t sure I could stomach.
A hush fell over the crowd as Feyer, the pack’s spokesman and the voice of the Moon Goddess, stepped forward. His silver hair gleamed under the sunlight, and his deep voice carried the authority of centuries-old tradition.
“Snowflake Cole,” he began, his tone resonant, “step forward to meet your destined mate.” The crowd shifted, and there she was.
Snowflake emerged, her steps hesitant, her head slightly bowed. My breath caught for a moment she was beautiful. I’d give her that. Her long, silver-blonde hair shimmered like moonlight, cascading over her shoulders. Her eyes, a piercing ice-blue, flickered with something unreadable as they met mine.
And her claws those delicate, razor-sharp tips peeking from her fingertips were unlike anything I’d ever seen, glinting with an otherworldly sheen. But beauty wasn’t enough. Not for me.
Not when Agnes’s words echoed in my mind: “She’s weak, Theo. She's so fragile, oh my beautiful poor thing, I don't even remember her shifting before, will you do me a favour? Ask her to shift before everyone tomorrow,I've been craving to see her in her wolf form.”
Feyer’s voice boomed again, pulling me from my thoughts.
“Snowflake Cole, do you accept Alpha Theo Vance as your traditionally wedded mate, in health and sickness, for richer or poorer, to stand by his side as his equal under the Moon Goddess’s light?”
The crowd leaned forward, their collective breath held. Snowflake’s eyes widened, her lips parting in shock.
What the hell? Did she not know this was coming? Had no one told her about the mate bond? Or.... my chest tightened at the thought...did she not feel it?
The bond was supposed to be undeniable, a pull that tethered two souls together. I felt it, a faint tug in my core, but her expression suggested she was caught off guard. Or worse, that she didn’t want this. Didn’t want me?
"Snowflake?” Feyer prompted, his brow furrowing slightly. Her gaze darted to her parents, then back to me. For a moment, I thought she might bolt.
The tension in the air was suffocating, the crowd’s murmurs growing louder. Then, in a voice so soft it barely carried, she said, “I… I accept.” Reluctantly.
The word hit me like a slap. She’d said yes, but her tone screamed hesitation. My fists clenched at my sides. What the hell is her problem?
Every woman in this pack would kill to be in her shoes, and she was acting like this was a punishment? I was Theo Vance, for Goddess’s sake. No one rejected me. No one.
Feyer turned to me, his eyes steady. “Alpha Theo Vance, do you accept Snowflake Cole as your traditionally wedded mate, to honor and protect, to stand by her side as her equal under the Moon Goddess’s light?”
The place fell silent. Every pair of eyes bored into me, waiting for my response. I could feel the weight of their expectations, the elders’ scrutiny, the crowd’s desperation for a fairy-tale moment.
My gaze swept over the faces, her parents, still smiling like idiots; Agnes, smirking in the back, her words from last night taunting me; the women in the front row, their hopeful expressions fading into uncertainty. And then my eyes settled on Snowflake. She stood there, her shoulders squared now, but her eyes betrayed her—nervous, unsure. Beautiful, yes, but weak. Unworthy.
I couldn’t do this. Not without proof she was more than the rumors claimed. “I’ll accept her,” I said, my voice cutting through the silence like a blade, “if she shifts into her wolf. Right here. Right now.”
A collective gasp rippled through the crowd. Snowflake’s eyes widened, her face paling. Her parents’ smiles vanished, replaced by shock. The elders exchanged uneasy glances, and Feyer’s mouth tightened into a thin line.
"Theo,” Feyer said, his tone low but sharp, “this is not part of the ceremony. The mate bond is sacred"
“Sacred?” I interrupted, stepping forward, my voice rising. “The Moon Goddess pairs me with a mate who’s never shown her wolf to the pack? Who’s rumored to be weak? I’m an Alpha. I deserve a mate who can stand beside me, not drag me down.” I turned to Snowflake, my eyes locking onto hers.
“Shift. Prove you’re worthy of me.”
The crowd erupted into whispers, some shocked, others excited by the drama unfolding. Snowflake’s hands trembled at her sides, her claws glinting as they caught the light. She opened her mouth, then closed it, her gaze darting between me and the elders.
“This isn’t—”
“Isn’t what?” I snapped, my patience thinning. “Fair? You think it’s fair that I’m expected to tie my life to someone who can’t even prove she’s a true shifter? Shift, Snowflake. Or this bond ends here.”
Her eyes glistened, but she didn’t cry. Instead, something shifted in her expression defiance, maybe, or anger. “You don’t know me,” she said, louder now, her voice steadying. “You don’t know what I’m capable of.”
“Then show me,” I challenged, crossing my arms. “Show all of us.” The crowd was buzzing now, the tension electric. Agnes’s smirk widened from the back, and I caught her eye for a split second. She’d warned me about this, about Snowflake’s supposed weakness.
Was she right? Or was there more to this quiet, beautiful girl standing before me? Snowflake took a step forward, her claws flexing. “You want a show, Alpha?” she said, her voice dripping with something I hadn’t expected confidence. “Fine. But don’t cry when you get more than you bargained for.”
The air crackled with anticipation as she closed her eyes, her body trembling. The crowd held its breath, and I leaned forward, my heart pounding despite myself. Was she bluffing? Or was I about to see something that would change the perspective I was made to believe of her?
