Chapter 1: The Bond That Was Never Meant to Happen
The night Isadora Valença was supposed to find her place in the world, everyone was waiting for her to fail.
She could feel it in the way people looked at her.
The whispers followed her through the crowded courtyard of the Ribeiro territory. Some were quiet enough to pretend they were not talking about her, but Isadora had spent her entire life learning how to recognize pity disguised as curiosity.
“That’s her, isn’t it?”
“The one who still hasn’t shifted?”
“She’s twenty-four. How is that even possible?”
“She shouldn’t have been allowed to attend the ceremony.”
Isadora kept her eyes forward.
She refused to let them see how much their words hurt.
Tonight was not about them.
Tonight was about proving that she belonged.
The sacred mate ceremony only happened once in a wolf’s lifetime. It was the night when the Moon Goddess revealed the person connected to their soul, the person who would stand beside them through life.
For most wolves, it was a celebration.
For Isadora, it was a final hope.
Maybe the Moon Goddess knew something everyone else didn’t.
Maybe there was a reason her wolf had remained silent for all these years.
Maybe she was not broken.
“Are you planning to stand there all night pretending you’re not terrified?”
Isadora turned and smiled slightly.
Maristela Figueiredo stood beside her, watching her with amused hazel eyes.
“I’m not terrified.”
Maristela raised an eyebrow.
“You’ve been holding that necklace so tightly for the last ten minutes that I’m surprised it hasn’t broken.”
Isadora looked down and immediately loosened her fingers around the small silver pendant around her neck.
She laughed quietly.
“Maybe I just don’t want to lose it.”
“You’ve had that necklace since you were a child.”
“I know.”
“Then you know it’s not going anywhere.”
Isadora smiled, but the expression faded quickly.
Maristela noticed.
“You’re thinking about what they said.”
Isadora looked toward the crowd.
“I’m thinking about what happens if they’re right.”
Maristela’s expression softened.
“Isadora.”
“What if there’s no wolf inside me?”
The question came out quieter than she intended.
For years, she had pretended it did not bother her.
She had watched others transform for the first time. She had watched their families celebrate. She had seen young wolves discover their abilities while she remained exactly the same.
No claws.
No transformation.
No connection to the wolf everyone said was supposed to exist inside her.
Maristela stepped closer.
“You are not less because your wolf has not appeared yet.”
“You believe that.”
“I know that.”
Before Isadora could answer, the entire courtyard suddenly became silent.
Not quiet.
Silent.
Every conversation stopped.
Every wolf turned toward the entrance.
Caetano Ribeiro had arrived.
Isadora had seen him before from a distance, but never this close.
The future Alpha heir walked through the crowd with the confidence of someone who had never questioned his place in the world.
Tall. Powerful. Controlled.
His dark hair moved slightly in the cold mountain wind, and his amber eyes scanned the gathering with a calm intensity that made even older wolves lower their heads.
Caetano Ribeiro was everything Isadora was not.
Strong.
Respected.
Certain.
Then his eyes found hers.
And everything changed.
The world seemed to disappear.
The sounds around her faded.
The cold air stopped touching her skin.
Something deep inside her awakened.
Not fear.
Recognition.
Her breath caught.
No.
It was impossible.
The pull between them was immediate.
Powerful.
Ancient.
Caetano stopped walking.
For the first time that night, his expression changed.
Shock.
Confusion.
Fear.
The crowd noticed.
Whispers spread instantly.
“Is he looking at her?”
“No.”
“That can’t be possible.”
“The Alpha heir?”
Isadora could barely hear them.
She only saw him.
The man standing across from her.
The man her soul somehow recognized.
A strange warmth spread through her chest.
After years of feeling like something was missing, something finally answered.
Her wolf.
For the first time in her entire life, she felt it.
A heartbeat that was not completely her own.
A presence buried deep inside her.
A voice.
Mine.
Isadora almost cried from relief.
She was not broken.
She was never broken.
Then the ceremony began.
The elders stepped forward, carrying ancient symbols carved into silver stones. The entire territory gathered around as the Moonlight Ceremony officially started.
One by one, wolves stepped forward.
One by one, bonds awakened.
Then it was Isadora’s turn.
Her feet moved before her mind could process it.
She walked toward Caetano.
Every step felt heavier.
When she stopped in front of him, neither of them spoke.
The connection between them was overwhelming.
Caetano reached for her hand.
The moment their fingers touched, the entire courtyard changed.
The flames surrounding the ceremony went out.
A wave of energy exploded through the ground.
Everyone stepped back.
A sharp pain burned across Isadora’s collarbone.
She gasped.
Caetano immediately released her hand.
But it was too late.
A silver mark appeared on her skin.
The entire courtyard froze.
An elder dropped the stone he was holding.
“No…”
The fear in his voice made Isadora’s stomach tighten.
“What is it?” someone whispered.
The elder stared at the mark.
“The Eclipse.”
The word traveled through the crowd like a warning.
Caetano looked at Isadora differently now.
Not with disgust.
Not with disappointment.
With terror.
And that hurt more.
“Caetano?” Isadora whispered.
He did not answer.
His breathing became uneven.
Then suddenly, he grabbed her hand again.
His eyes went blank.
He was seeing something.
Something no one else could see.
A battlefield.
Fire.
Blood.
Isadora standing in the middle of destruction.
Dead.
His hands covered in her blood.
A future where accepting her meant losing her forever.
Caetano pulled away violently.
The vision disappeared.
But the fear remained.
“Tell me what you saw,” Isadora said.
He looked at her.
For one painful second, she thought he would explain.
She thought he would choose her.
Instead, his face became cold.
The entire courtyard watched.
Waiting.
Caetano swallowed.
Then he spoke.
“I reject this bond.”
The words were worse than any wound.
Isadora stared at him, unable to move.
The connection inside her shattered.
The same wolves who had whispered about her weakness now watched in silence.
Because everyone understood one thing.
The Alpha heir had rejected his mate.
And nobody knew why.
Isadora stepped back slowly.
Her eyes burned, but she refused to cry in front of them.
Not here.
Not where everyone expected her to break.
She turned away from Caetano.
But before she left the ceremony grounds, the mark on her collarbone burned again.
And deep inside her mind, a voice she had never heard before whispered:
“Finally.”
Isadora froze.
Because the voice was not afraid.
It was waiting.
“The last Eclipse Wolf has awakened.”
